You can purchase a F1P-00118 Visual Studio Professional W/MSDN PREMIUM 2-year SA for $1800 ( softwaremoreUSA.com). So it is cheaper than you say. 2008 is a great year: Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008 (the 1st in the next 3-year cycle)
I think you overestimate our resource situation. Tops of mountains are being chopped off because regular and strip mining are less and less effective due to depletion. Millions of acres of land is being fire-sold to foreign companies all the time. Unless we nationalize the land, there won't be much left here once China isn't a future option.
*mod up* I too hate it when people speak about DRM on Windows being all the lame it is yet there are *TONS* of other 3rd party programs out there that work quite nice without the DRM. The pool is big enough for everyone.
The Microsoft of today doesn't offer that level of documentation and the ability to really tinker with the computer to make it work.
Yes they do, it is called the Platform SDK and Microsoft SDK v6.0. It is more like a 30,000 page manual now.
Do they realize the current state of speech recognition? Once pocket computers (on-host or via low-latency WiMAX'ish connection) can do speaker-independent natural language processing, a bit of machine learning (support vector machines?), and some grammar-free event-driven verb-object controls, then we will have a real interface. EyeTap.org is an interesting concept though.
Some people are already doing this, such as koders, code fetch, codase, and snippets. Talk to them for formalizing as I'm sure they have some good input.
There will be TONS of people submitting bug fixes and enhancements to them; good thing too and it took them FOREVER to even this far, which isnt that far.
You fail to mention that.NET supports Ruby ala IronRuby among dozens of other languages. This is a BIG difference from Java and the JVM (although JVM is beginning to support dynamic languages using a pass-through API -- not very integrated).
What most people don't know is that you can refuse to take the breathalyzer test. Doing so gives you an automatic offense but doesn't give you a DUI. Same goes with jury nullification. They want to keep you dumb and scared and thus a bad citizen. Hypocrates.
I've been using GWO for a while now. It is ok. But for many, the variations are normally more than a page change (like under-the-hood shared objects), so it basically throws out many uses for this.
If you do like GWO, I suggest you check out CrazyEgg: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/crazyegg_meas uring_website_usability.php
You should try Windows Server 2008. It is a big more of a memory hog (due to caching) than Windows Server 2003R2, but it is very nice. Try it and see if it does better for you (it did for me). Check out http://blogs.msdn.com/vijaysk/archive/2008/02/11/using-windows-server-2008-as-a-super-desktop-os.aspx

Can I buy this router off you? I know some haight/ashberry hippies downstairs I want to fuck with.
Why use this instead of the virtual version? http://dev.laptop.org/pub/virtualbox/

According to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html I would say there are better deals than the X2 4000+ (The Q6600 is only $270 and can overclock nicely)
Unless you do a UDP spoof onto a service that isn't patched.

Could they block that?
The iPhone has been unlocked so this isn't a valid argument.

I believe F# is another language to check out. They now have a Visual Studio 2008 Add-in, check it out.
Proprietary is never going away, get use to it. There will never be a 100% open source world.
Great vacation spot and a lucky choice for those finding a correct result. http://www.eveandersson.com/pi/monte-carlo-circle looks like a winner to me.

FYI, googling: Wave Equation "three dimensions" approximation .brings up a lot of hits..
Call Wolfram's tech support, I'm sure they can assist.
They should at least open source the parallel project -- open source requires no budget.
oh come on, you sell yourself short. You could always get a new UID that has more digits (like me).
"At the end of the day all that creativity".. Who else is sick to death of this expression (although I did find the article fascinating!)
