    nonsense. there's no "linux inside" sticker because there's no reason to put it there. you see "inside" stickers if it's a selling point of the product. whether it should be or or not, linux is not a selling point when it comes to what consumers recognize and value.

    also, note that windows-based computer packaging is routinely bashed for all of the ads and logos plastered to the box. the current trend is simpler packaging like what you see from apple products.

    because people love to make it sound like GPL is terrible when it's not

    it's terrible to businesses that rely on proprietary software for survival. you can comment that those businesses are out of touch and have a poor business model, but that just shows how out of touch you are with businesses.

    businesses will avoid entering into any "contract" that removes their options. even if they are OSS-friendly, they want to control what happens next, not be legally bound to act one way or the other.

    It used to be useful on the server side, but every month that goes by it falls further behind.

    every major programming index shows java at the top. oops. i'll let you google for "programming index" and click on the links.

    At this point, the only reason to use Java is because that's what you've always used.

    another reason to stick with it is because you like money and having a job. even if java was declining, you'd have steady employment in that space for the rest of your life.

    I pay for stuff I like if I feel that the price is fair. Most others are the same way.

    first, that's what people tell themselves to justify not paying, and you are right, most everyone is the same as you in the regard. second, obviously the word "fair" is subjective the statement that everyone should do what they think is fair is meaningless.

    third, who are you to decide what is fair? you didn't write the app, and have no idea how much time, effort, and resources went into the development. if it took me 3 man years of development, and i had to pay to license some technology, and i decide it needs to cost $30 for me to recoup my losses and make a small profit, who are you to tell me different?

    where i live, the *starting* salary is ~$72k. now factor in overtime, benefits, paid training, and the 2nd job security gigs, and premiums for special assignment. 6 of the top 15 paid city employees are police officers.

    i never said it wasn't outmoded. i said the fact that you and a vast, vast minority of others work odd hours isn't a good argument against it. argue that it doesn't make sense for society, not that it does't make sense for you and your vampire-like lifestyle.

    sure "a lot" of people work shifts, but "a lot" of people can also handle driving 120mph, and "a lot" of people can safely bring their assault weapons on airplanes also. laws / rules are there for the convenience / safety of society as a whole, not the individual.

    Oh and LED bulbs are way better than CFLs.

    they are only ~20% more efficient, and cost 5x as much as a CFL (and i'm being kind there).

    they claim to last 2x as long as a CFL, but i'm not investing in any energy saving tech that isn't paying for itself after 10 years of service. in 5 years, there will be LEDs that cost peanuts, are more efficient, and more reliable. now isn't the right time for LEDs.

    I still see some LED options at 50$ a bulb in lowes vs a 150 watt bulb for 96 cents.

    the time isn't right for LEDs, yet.

    there's a lot bigger savings going from incandescent to CFL than to LEDs. moving away from incandescent to CFL is a no brainer, but LEDs are only about 20% more efficient than CFLs, but cost 5x (at the min) as much. that is mitigated somewhat by the fact that LED is supposed to last 2x as long as a CFL. now there's the issue of mercury in the CFL lamps ...

    considering how fast the tech is changing, i have a hard time investing in an LED bulb that is supposed to last 20+ years at 4 hours a day. in 5 years, they are going to have something vastly better, in efficiency, cost and reliability. at that point the LED hasn't even come close to paying for itself in savings over the CFL.

    Besides - you mentioned "shift". I work third shift. It matters not one iota to me where the sun is when I wake up, or lay down.

    so what? most people don't work shifts, and hello, policies aren't meant to work for every single citizen, they are meant to accomodate the interest of society as a whole.

    and just because you saw a pink koala bear doesn't mean all are pink. my god. i never said that the app never, ever crashed on anyone. i said that i've used (use) it extensively and it never crashes for me. that, and maps is generally considered to be the killer app for android and is the platform's main advantage over iOS.

    and no, you don't seem to understand the relevance of sample sizes. because you and your buddy have seen google maps crash doesn't mean it's an unstable application in general. i challenge you to pick any heavily used app on any platform and google for "xxx crash" and not come significant results.

    p.s., i just searched for "ronald reagan is black" and came up with 34m hits. what did i just prove?

    Apps need a standard user interface way to exit. Really.

    no, they don't. if you use android for more than 10s you understand that you just switch to whatever app you want, and let the OS manage the lifecycle of the application. go back to windows if you feel you need to exit an application.

    MTP looks great on paper, in practice it is dog slow and buggy. Back to the drawing board please.

    works fine on all devices i've ever used. much better than mounting and unmounting UMS ... and accessible from two devices at once.

    Maps crashes all the time. Surely you know that. Fix it.

    i can't recall maps ever crashing.

    Android is not a community project. Fix that.

    what's wrong with it now?

    Running a data center of supercomputer cluster wouldn't be cheap when it costs me ~$300/month to power my desktop PC and toaster oven.

    and of course you are exaggerating. i live in san jose, and during the summer when i don't have heat running (and i don't have AC), my gas+electric bill is around $70. that's for a small house. maybe it is those grow lights in your basement?

    To the point about fuel prices (and other things), have you ever considered that the government restrictions cause some of the price differentials? I mean, after all, we can't drill, or build pipelines or refineries or ... due to government restrictions.

    so .... what does a govt get out of restrictions? under the table payments from those deep-pocketed environmental non-profits. or maybe it's Big Solar lobbyists? wait ...

    you can make the point that the govt is misguided in placing restrictions drilling, pipelines, etc ... but it isn't greed. there's clearly more $ to be had all around by sucking every drop out of domestic oil deposits.

    They'd rather have those flying cars, which patents and lawyers make a near-impossibility even if the tech was affordable.

    the problem with flying cars will never go away: if there's a malfunction, YOU DIE. that's why it will never happen. that, and flying will always take significantly more fuel than rolling something along the ground.

    exactly. the difference is (for me) i'm old. i've had lots of time to see things come around again. when you are a kid, it all seems new, even if it's a rehash. then when you are old, you look back to being a kid and how much better it was because everything was new.
