In the Matrix, machines depend on humans for energy - that's just a metaphor.

Google's energy is content. Google keeps humans happy by providing them a lot of freebies. The whole purpose of the human race is to create content for google to index, serve etc.

    Welcome to the Matrix.

  11. Not Just Snippets on Google To Seek Dismissal of Suit Against Google Books · · Score: 1

Most of the posts are saying the google just shows search snippets. That's not true.

Some of the books just have a snippet view. But there are a lot of books where you can get many pages of the book.

    Here is an example
    http://tinyurl.com/727xtle

This is from the book "System Dynamics" by Ogata. Several complete & continuous pages can be seen. There are various books where I have seen anything from 20% to 50% of the book being shown on Google books - after every 4-5 pages - couple of pages are not shown & then again 4-5 pages.

The discussion of whether it helps the author or not is irrelevant.

  12. Carriers on An Easy Way To Curb Smart-Phone Thieves, In Australia · · Score: 1

  21. Another Bush Presidency casuality on USPS Losing Battle Against the E-mail Age · · Score: 4, Informative

The real reason for USPS problems is not e-mail or online bill pay. The real reason is the Postal Act of 2006 which requires USPS to pre-fund 80% of future retiree health-care obligations by 2016. This costs USPS 5.5 billion $ per year. If not for this, USPS would have shown a 600 Million $ profit over the last 4 years.

None of the USPS competitors (or for that matter any other company) has this burden. It's very likely this was lobbied for by USPS competitors - No lobbyist left behind.

  22. Re:What's the problem? on Why Microtransactions In Games Are Amoral · · Score: 1

I don't really understand what's so difficult to figure out here... A game is not a necessity. It's not like food, insurance or fossil fuels. Don't like it, don't play the damn game. If everyone followed this mantra microtransactions would go away. But a lot of people obviously don't care or are not principled enough to do something about it. So it gets forced on the rest of us, who evidently are in the minority.

What do you mean 'forced'? A game is not a necessity. It's not like food, insurance or fossil fuels. Don't like it, don't play the damn game. Nobody is forcing anything on anyone.
