Since when does technological innovation have it's roots in "beating the other guy". It's for advancement of society, for curiousity, for problem solving. Just because China does some research doesn't mean it's trying to win a "race". Sure they might have wanted in the past to play catch up in technological progress, but why are we so quick to assume it's a race? Why not just assume they're doing it for the betterment of society?
Where does all this xenophobia come from? The average Chinese citizen doesn't feel this way towards Americans, but for some reason, we are so paranoid about them. Perhaps the reason is that Chinese people consume a lot of American media, while here in America, we are less open towards foreign entertainment.
Not really. Asian people are short right *now* because of lack of nutrition, but believe me, they are getting taller as their nutrition improves. ie, drinking milk, eating more, etc...
The average height of a French man in the 1800s was 5'6".
I'm still waiting for 3G or GPRS to be affordable...nevermind 4G. Perhaps the carriers will lower the prices for 3G or GPRS when 4G comes out... or maybe not.
No one is going to be a threat to Microsoft until they challenge Windows as an operating system. Microsoft can always include any product they make into their operating system "for free" (actually subsidized by the cost of Windows), and push them out, like what they've done with all before them.
The key to "beating" Microsoft is the OS. Something that's easy to use, runs on cheap/common hardware, and compatible with current software.
He is a media guy in charge of an electronics company. The media division is why Sony is in this mess in the first place. DRM and anti-copying technology for the sake of protecting it's media business is what's killing Sony.
"I bought shares in mighty Sony," cried a woman whose holdings had lost nearly two-thirds of their value. "What are you going to do about this?"
It was hardly an unexpected question, and Stringer answered as best he could. Citing runaway ticket sales for Sony Pictures' The Da Vinci Code and the remarkable success of the Bravia digital TV line, he argued that Sony has entered a period of reemergence.
His answer shows his thinking. All he knows is media. He has no idea that the media division is crippling the hardware. If it weren't for Sony's disdain for mp3s, they could have easily came out with an MP3 player and beaten the iPod. That's worth more than a whole year's worth of blockbuster movies.
Blame Howard Stringer and his media cronies for infecting Sony. They've helped their positions by helping the media division at the expense of Sony's core strength - electronics.
It seems that society rewards those that are successful in professions that contribute the least to society - actors/actresses, directors, athletes, politicians, bankers, executives...
Meanwhile, scientists have been the catalyst for the greatest positive change in society.
It's okay, most people in America don't even know why they hate China. Aside from being an authoritarian government, China hasn't done much worse than the United States has in terms of attacking non-threatening countries, violating human rights, unfair trade policies, etc... People are just eating up the media's need to find a villian in this world. These days, China can't do anything right.
There seems to be some anti-communist, racist, and/or anti-foreign element to this, similar to the anti-French sentiment. Let's first worry about our own country first before we poke our noses into the "ethics" of another.
But my major gripe is that F5 doesn't refresh. Not only does it not refresh, but pressing the key (expecting it to refresh) actually locks you out of the product and you have to re-enter the password to get back in. It's not just a bad user interface, it's actually user-hostile.
I believe F9 is the refresh key. You're just too accustomed to Windows (TM).
There's a difference: Microsoft is still the leader because of it's monopoly and because it copies other companies' innovations and leverages it's operating system to make it "easier to use".
Google has many competitors that people can switch to by just typing a different URL. It continually innovates even when it's in the leadership position. Even if Ask.com was slightly better, it would not make much of a difference. Something has to be significantly better for people to switch.
Also Google has many tie-ins to other products, like Firefox.
It's not surprising that Howard Stringer, a guy who came from the media business, is in charge of Sony corporate. Their movement towards the content side dictating the direction of the company has caused the company to suffer - from DRM in their MP3 walkman, to the rootkit, and now to the PS3. It's too bad that such a great technology company that continually innovates is hindered by their more profitable content division. Too bad they don't realize *why* their electronics division is *less* profitable.
The problem is, there are some universal truths. Hate based on race is universally accepted to be wrong.
You might say, what about fat people? Or political affiliation?
Well basically you can change your thinking, or your waist-belt. Your kids can be gay or your uncle and so forth.
But you can't change your race. Your parents can't change their race. And neither can your kids.
The hater will possibly have to deal with people they know being gay, fat, or a change of philosophy - but they will never have to deal with another race if they don't want to.
It's too bad companies realize dealing with Microsoft is usually a bad idea in the long run. Make a profitable business based on Windows and Microsoft will always move in on your turf and leverage it's monopoly position against you.
There's no such thing as a symbiotic relationship with Microsoft.
Why does censorship exist? Because some people who view the hate content will be affected by it. Eventually incidents where minorities are threated will occur and it will be difficult to stop because many people will share the same sentiment. It starts with jokes, then name-calling, then verbal threats, physical threats, until it spirals out of control. Jokes, name-calling, and verbal threats go unpunished. As a white male, it is difficult to see the effects, because minorities are affected.
Why not cry against legalizing child porn? Show hardcore sex during daytime television? Allow hate groups to start private schools?
There is a line - and I prefer it to be drawn before people have to put up with harassment and discrimination in their lives.
Sorry, I consider common people from China that I work with every day to be credible. You believe political activists to be credible. The people I work with are unbiased. The people you regard as credible are biased. Political activists are like missionaries.
Before you start worrying about the "human rights" of Chinese people, you should ask if they care about it as much as you, since they seem to care more about quality of life, which has been improving.
You're right, this argument is a waste of time, your mind is already made up based on personal biases. Look up "sanctimonious" in the dictionary and look in the mirror.

Much like many humans you see every day.
Microsoft is always playing catch up to Google:
http://www.google.com/googlegulp/
Sorry, I checked your URL for hours and couldn't find any information on black holes, except for a few images.
I was reading it fine until I hit the word "Penthouse", then I forgot everything else and had to look it up:

They can start by avoiding the words "Paradigm Shift".
...who would have thought 10 years ago that people would read web pages by clicking on the "Print" icon so they can view the entire article at once?

As big a risk as Microsoft losing it's monopoly anytime soon.

Have you tried http://search.yahoo.com/ ?
www.yahoo.com is a portal for information. search.yahoo.com is for searching.
So are you saying that Microsoft is going to shorten the console cycle to 3 years now? What's next, 2 years? 1 year? Might as well buy a PC then!
Consoles exist because they have along life cycle.
