Perhaps the PS3 isn't doomed for failure like so many people have suggested, and that common people that don't listen to the doom and gloom coming from blogs are actually interested in buying the PS3 because they think it holds good value?
After neglecting the Internet space, they've finally realized that there's a lot of unfounded trash talk against the PS3. Microsoft's been very keen at catering to the blogosphere that there are many pro-360 sites which have helped influence the minds of many gamers.
Overpriced? Nope, it's a better value than the XBox 360 when it comes to technology and cost of manufacturing.
Overheating? Nope, it's cooler than the XBox 360.
Shortage? Doesn't take away from the console, just my ability to buy one.
The only thing I can think of that's a legitimate negative for the PS3 is the lack of rumble.
The positives for the PS3 are worth the extra $100 you spend (Premium Xbox 360 vs base PS3):
Free online service Better form factor Linux capability Blu-ray Motion control Superior hardware (may take at least a year for developers to take advantage of it though)
It was Linux capability that tipped the scales for me though.
As for rootkit, Lik-Sang and DRM... I think Microsoft's done just as bad w/ their monopoly and it's just as bad with DRM.
The Wii is a great machine too, and I've been recommending it to most people who can't afford the PS3 (or can afford both), and to those who have kids.
The Linux part was a joke. The point was that it's "News for nerds.", which has a technological/scientific focus. This topic is just too mainstream, and too trivial. The 9/11 attacks affected us all. This doesn't affect anyone in the United States, aside from maybe popular opinion for/against the "war".
All those stories you mentioned have a scientific focus to them.
They all seem part of some sort of Microsoft network... and would be cited as examples of "Adver-Blogging".
Aside from selective "journalism", they're headlines include:
Sony Hates Europeans, Will Prevent The Importing of PS3 Why the PS3 Needs Lots of Power
Microsoft Blogger Says PS3 Online "Likely Underwelming"
Sony: "European gamers come second"
The only reason they report on the PS3 is to put a negative spin on it, and get people to think they're a credible news source, rather than a fanboy site or a sponsored Microsoft site.
It's a shame that these "news sources" show up on Google News over more credible sites like IGN.
The benefit of having a high capacity drive is a smart decision from a technological perspective. With more powerful systems and more information required for games, having a high capacity format makes absolute sense.
First of all, the extra capacity allows for more textures, more information, cutscenes,...just more information for next-generation games.
Second, the drive speed can be relatively low and still be able to read more information than a normal DVD. This is the reason why the Xbox 360's DVD drive is so loud - it's because it's spinning so fast. The reason it spins so fast is because it has to read so much information from the DVD. Also since it spins so fast, the disc gets scratched if tilted while running. The PS3 on the other hand, can get away with a lower drive speed and still read as much information as the XBox 360.
If Microsoft included HDDVD and Linux capability on the XBox 360 like Sony did for the PS3, I'd already have an XBox 360 by now.
It appears that he and Kumar had differences in opinion, which led to Wang being drawn out of the company and a separation in their business relationships.
They'll just move on to Linux... and not have to spend billions of dollars on the "Microsoft Tax".
Besides, the Chinese government won't have to worry about malicious code coming from an American company (not that they did anyways since I doubt there's anything to fear).
I wonder if the Japanese laugh at it and will use it as an inside joke like "all your base are belong to us"? Of course, perhaps they're more cultured and civilized than us.
That's what happens when the media companies and **AA sinks their teeth into an electronics company. They even have a media guy (Howard Stringer) as CEO. This is all because the media division is crippling their other divisions for it's own benefit and thus making itself look better --and a strong division has more influence in the company than ones that are losing money.
If you want to boycott Sony, boycott their entertainment products, but buy their electronics, PS3 included. Just don't buy the Blu-ray movies from Sony. With any luck, Sony will "spin-off" their money losing media division and become an electronics company again.
Look at the timelines. It's very possible that Nina cheated on her husband with Sturgeon, his financial agent, a couple years ago. And more recently broke up with Sturgeon and started oing out with this other guy.
China's system of government is anti-humanist, corrupt, inefficient, brutal, militaristic, autocratic, and by almost any definition (other than the Chinese, which you seem to prefer) evil. It IS worse than our system on all but the most twisted 'better' to 'worse' scale, for the individual and for the society as a whole.
You are stating pure opinion here. The American government can be considered anti-humanist (abortion, gay rights), corrupt (Halliburton, lobbyists, etc..), inefficient, militaristic (we spend the most on our military), brutal (CIA prisons, Guatanamo)... I'll give you autocratic though. But should we consider the Kings and Queens of the West as "evil"? Just FYI, I do believe our system is better than theirs, but I wouldn't call their system "evil". The government has instituted policies that have improved the quality of living for many Chinese. Compare this with some republics, such as Mexico and Indonesia, both of which have cheap labor as well, and neither one has had the rapid rise in quality of living that China has had.
If you speak to most Chinese people residing in America, they'll just give you a shrug. Some actually prefer living in China and plan to go back. The fact that we care more about their political system than they do should tell you that perhaps our reasons are more self-serving than we realize.
The chinese system has always been based on authority, hierarchies and loyalty, which is the opposite of how science works
Are you implying that the "West" (in a euro-centric point of view), did not have authority, hierarchies and loyalty? Science still flourished during a time when there was authoritarian rule - except we choose to glorify them as monarchies with great kings and queens while villifying "Eastern" rule as authoritarian and oppressive.
China has had many leaders, and like ours, some believed more in science while others did not. They were still able to invent many things that the "West" copied. Scientific progress and quality of life can still thrive without democracy and capitalism.
