Firefox may need to evolve into more than just a browser. Seth Godin, author of several books on the Internet, including Small Is the New Big, says Mozilla needs to incorporate tools like tagging or building tools like a link to eBay's Skype calling service that will help keep friends connected.
Anyone else wishing someone would create a stripped down version of Firefox optimized for speed, without all the crud? They could call it something like Phoenix, or even Firebird, to distinguish it from Firefox.
I'm wondering why they didn't use compressed oxygen instead of compressed carbon dioxide? If the choice was arbitrary, why put the extra strain on the ISS's life support systems by adding more CO2 to the environment? I'm guessing there's a good reason to use CO2? Any ideas?
No, I'm pretty sure AMD was not responsible for Intel's own implementation of the 64-bit x86 extensions.
Anyone else read it the same way I did?

An IPS is subject to a denial of service attack? This has been considered a disadvantage of IPSs in general since the earliest days they were available.
I completely agree. At the University where I work at near downtown Chicago, I still see GTA San Andreas stickers on my commute to work (stuck to streetlamps, mailboxes, etc.) years after the game came out. The chalk IBM layed is certainly more ephemeral than the GTA stickers. I've noticed workers struggling to remove them but they usually give up after a while and let them remain.
Furthermore, there's nothing precluding the lending agency from sending out the old fashioned repo men should they fail to receive payment and suspect a car has been tampered with.
Thanks for the heads up. I was actually putting it on there to test the upgrade procedure from 5.4 to 6.0 before I applied it to the other sparc machines but not Blade 100s.
It's implicitly assumed he meant it was a niche OS among the Windows/Home PC crowd.
While I agree with your comments for the most part, to say that the majority of all new servers are slated to run GNU/Linux is typical of the naive slashdot groupthink and is not remotely true. However, I'm in the middle of installing FreeBSD 5.4 on a Sun Blade 100 machine so I'm doing my part!
Slashdot is great for many things. However, the general consensus among many, especially those whose enlightened opinions and interesting comments would be welcome here, is that most Slashdot articles are FUD-mongering themselves.
I don't understand, I visit/. day in day out and all I hear about is how the great benefit of OSS is that anyone can read and improve the source code reducing the amount of vulnerabilities. A million zealots can preach the benefits of FLOSS, not many of them seem to practice it though.
Go ahead mark me down as troll but this is something I've been thinking about a lot. I use OSS on my Solaris network when permitted because the benefits are still awesome. Also, please save the canned replies of "but it was fixed quickly because the source was available". It's still a response to the problem that should not have been present to begin with if the zealots were to be believed.
A little off topic, but still about Viral Marketing techniques trashing something up.
Has anyone seen those stickers for GTA San Andreas on mailboxes, stop lights, electrical boxes and anywhere else within arm's reach in the downtown area of their city? I work in downtown Chicago, and I can't help but see several of these every day on my commute. Of course, the marketing company hired to put those there is not going to make an effort to later clean them up, further adding to the graffiti and dirtiness of the city.. It's no different than petty vandalism and it makes me angry!
After that we found out where they lived and took pictures of them leaving their houses in the morning for some who lived nearby, their licence plates and inside of their cars, where they worked some with pictures of them working and sent it to them a few days later. About a week after that we took pictures of someone taking pictures of us from across the street in a car we did not recognize and blew up the image to find the culprit who we told the competing gallery about which promptly took his whole installation including 2 computers synchronizing motion to music (just a program downloaded off the net) and left all of it in the back of the building in central Phoenix in broad daylight. Virtually nothing survived, lol. Some people were pissed we took photos of them and their art but I believe it it legal to do so in public. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That was the most boring first post ever.

Hahaha, you made me spit my coffee on the screen!
Hahaha, well said!
You're right. It still frustrates me to see those stickers that I guess I unintentionally exaggerated.

Re:Legit site. Ignore idiots.
Since when does a little bit of healthy skepticism make one an idiot?
No. I don't...

Just like the analogies MS uses when comparing the TCO of Windows to Linux. Just because it's an analogy doesn't mean it's not FUD.

In other news, when asked about the possible ecological effects on marine life from an exploding submarine, the military had no comment.

Secure OS or not, many (most?) browser vulnerabilities are at the application level. Though it seems this interesting case is not
