Ahoy. Thanks for your comment. Of course it is rated M, and I'm sure the GP knew that. However, we all know that it's far from unaccessible to minors. The GP only mentioned whether that's what the story may have been about.
Why is there more than one OSS alternative to Windows? Probably for the same reason that we don't all drive Camry's. Choice is good, and some of us like to drive something cooler.
More seriously, the BSD's have more users today than Linux did 8 years ago: would it have been reasonable to say that Linux was a dead-end OS in 2000? Of course not:)
You could have made this argument 5 years ago, but today, it doesn't work. Now, most cheating is done by those looking to profit financially, not from those looking to avoid the 'grind'.
I usually skip his posts but I overlooked his name this morning because it was posted as 'Journal written by stemceller (975823) and posted by kdawson'
I just make sure none of my coworkers are around when I look at something tagged NSFW. It's easier than using steganography to hide the offending content in an mp3. Oh wait...
RAM contents aren't necessarily zeroed on reboot. In fact, researchers found that physical memory retained data for as long as 30 seconds while powered off on certain laptops.
I bet you're one of those Slashdot readers that pretends to hate MS and love Linux and yet is browsing from a Windows desktop. Sure, the Linux desktop is better than MS (I'm using Ubuntu to write this right now), but it certainly cannot be considered 'instant-on.'
This is funny and all. But I can't help but wonder how often this kind of thing goes on that we aren't aware of and is perpetrated by non-Darwin candidates. I mean, news is only "news" when it's interesting and unusual (given that it's usually reported by a for-profit institution).
While I get your point, did you even check out TFS?
The clips are only a couple minutes long and give no indication where, chronologically, they exist during an episode. Maybe clicking back, clicking to start the next 1 minute clip, watching another commercial, and rinse & repeat 10 times is fine with you, but I think that goes beyond what most people would consider reasonable should they want to watch an entire show.
What do you expect, it's a kdawson post. I wouldn't be surprised if the only URL in the submitted story was a link to someone's personal blog (although judging by the URL, it's probably not).
Is anyone really surprised that this story didn't turn out to be all that?
kdawson has a penchant for posting 'stories' linking to shady blog postings, archived emails and usenet messages that tend to be little more than flamebait. If he's got anything going for him, he doesn't discriminate who he spreads FUD against.
For extra enjoyment when you read slashdot, try to pick out which stories have been posted by kdawson without peeking at who it was. It's a very easy game.

Is the only reason to do it to convey information, or maybe to have a little fun?
You say "mill", I say "himalountain".
Perhaps they don't want to be embarrassed by the quality of the code.

He just tags it 'misleadingheadline'

That was my first thought. However, TFA shows a picture of the speakers mounted on the top of a building, presumably secured from trespassers.
I wonder where the submitter heard about this? Oh yeah: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/05/dell_world_of_warcraft_notebook/

Exactly. But you can take steps to limit the lifetime of sensitive data in memory.

Either you're 10x smarter than the rest of us, or you're commenting on the wrong story. Either way, I'm afraid to use my mod points on you.
No kidding. I did a double take when I saw that it was Zonk and not kdawson that posted this story.

This place's slow descent into being kdawson's personal blog. That wasn't a joke.
Can someone please mod kdawson +1 flamebait. Providing as the one reference in the submission a random dude's blog is lame.

"...increasingly vocal..." really? The world moves on. Nobody really cares.
"...a scathing response..." not really. This exact phrase was used to describe another Linux vendors response...
...is that you?b
"Dear Gibson, Slashdot really needs to review your guitar. We'll need several review units and we lost your return address."
That's a great way to get them to send you a review unit... NOT!
Is anyone really surprised that this story didn't turn out to be all that?

Gamasutra: Well, as long as it's awesome.
Now that's what I call hard hitting reporting! Gamasutra's not afraid to ask the tough questions.
