thoughts, memories, and emotions are chemical reactions
Do you propose that chemicals are responsible for what separate humans from machines? I'm not poking fun, I've considered this idea myself. What is it about chemical reactions that grants humans the attributes machines don't have? Are all chemical reactions forms of a soul (or whatever it is that in your opinion separates humans from machines)? How do you draw the line between those chemical reactions that result in a soul (or humanity) and those that don't?
I don't know why we don't have more discussion of this type ongoing in this country.
Very intruiging idea. I've never considered before using basically a physics engine to model the brain. However, I've often wondered why we don't have reasearch into similar areas such as simulating the neurons of the brain using computer hardware. It seems like the obvious way to start research in any of these areas would be to try to simulate a brain using... a brain. Whenever I want to learn how something works, I take it apart and try to put it back together. When I've got it back so it is working how it was before, I know I've got a decent understanding of how it works. Basically, I'm saying that, when you don't really know how a radio works, its a lot easier to put a radio together from radio pieces rather than putting a radio together from pieces of something else. We already have the pieces of the brain (neurons) so why aren't we putting these together to try to create a functional unit? A Frankenstein of sorts. I didn't learn of any such research during my undergrad Cognitive Science program, and I am skeptical that we will have created a Frankenstein within 20 years. Using the radio analogy, I'm also therefore skeptical we will have achieved the equivalent thing through software, even though we are incapable of doing it using exactly the same matter that is in our brain. I dunno, maybe I'm missing something.
Yeah, we can prove the election was fair by showing that Republicans control more land than Democrats. Since land ownership equals enfranchisement, this is a no brainer! How can the Democrats claim to have been cheated, when they have so little land?!
How can you say Davy Jones (http://www.paloaltoonline.com/photos/deadmansches t.jpg) doesn't have a face? The whole point of that effect was that he's covered in CGI and you can still see his eyes and lips conveying the subtleties of emotion that we expect to see from actors. That is the point which I guess you missed entirely.
People have a hardwired emotional reaction to faces. Without showing faces, its hard to convey a character's emotions. Even if the character's face is covered in tentacles, the same still holds.
V (http://joeblade.com/images/sidebars/v-for-vendett a.jpg)is a much more relevant case because his face doesn't change to convey emotion. However, it is still a face with eyes, nose, mouth and lips. It gives people something to attach to. It satisfies that basic part of our brain that needs to see those items in order to form an emotional attachment. And it does more than that - the sly but benign grin on the mask conveys the character's nature as a devilish rogue out to save the world.
The maker of a Halo movie will have a hard time creating a similar emotional attachment without showing the lead character's face. This is especially true if the aliens do have faces. It's psychological and would be very difficult for the writers and would just be too risky for a Hollywood movie. I'm not saying it can't or shouldn't be done. I'm saying it is difficult and risky and those are two things big Hollywood studios avoid like the plague.
I'll give you great odds if you want to lay money that the studios will cater to Halo fanatics by never showing MC's face, vs. catering to everyone else by showing it.
Well I'm absolutely sure the Cuban government retains the right to block access to whomever it deems to be on its terrorist list, and if it deems CNN as on or does business with someone on the list, then they can block access within Cuba. From America's point of view, CNN does not do business with groups on the list, so they are not on our list. Do you fail to see that there are separate groups considered terrorist from each point of view? Obviously we are not going to blacklist those who we agree with.
I know this is a joke, but there is truth to it as well. With a surplus of energy we would be able to install more exhaust scrubbers and not worry about the decrease in efficiency that comes along with it. We would be able to invest more in hydrogen fuel cells because we could use the energy to create the hydrogen. And we would be able to clean our carbon sinks in the environment and create new projects to trap carbon from the atmosphere.
How about a new sci-fi weapon composed of an accelerator creating ultra high energy cosmic rays and a laser. The laser heats the material to high temperature and the stream of cosmic rays punches through it with baseball-like power. Has anyone read of something like this? Or is it just plain retarded?
this is kind of like saying if CNN shows people in little Havan a marching and calling for Fidel Castro's overthroew we should shut down CNN.com
That's the most retarded comparison I've ever heard. The point of the legislation is to make it illegal to fund terrorist groups by way of business transactions. For instance, you are a terrorist and I want to support you so I pay you $50 million to make a tv show. The CNN example you've given is not related to that scenario at all (unless you are trying to say that Fidel Castro has a financial stake in CNN?). It has nothing to do with the very subjective issue of determining which websites or tv stations "offend our friends". It is about the very objective list of who participates in business transactions with groups on the Terrorist List. (Now, the issue of who deserves to be on that list may be subjective.)
My post was intended as a joke relating to an alternate meaning of the word "hard" and how some Microsoft employees appear to be the type that may become aroused by FUD.
Wow, wish I had mod points just so others could see those awesome images. I had no idea we could generate photo-realism like that! The second image is the best.
I don't think this is the next logical step at all. I've spent years developing technology which will allow humans to use the sun's energy to convert ADP to ATP. Vitamin supplements provide the minerals we need. This is the final solution. No harmed cows, the perfect diet for all.
Look for my products in stores in 2008.
My father in law has had a lot of success running his law practice this way. Of course, he does have a JD and can speak lawyerese when he absolutely has to.

Worth noting is that Nintendo does take off the suit for the upcoming Super Smash Brothers Brawl on the Wii. Pic at http://www.animaxis.com/images/products/131627.jpg. You can see a (very brief) glimpse of her in this trailer, but you gotta wait for it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=kfixYJ7zvTk
She does have a very "womanly" shape. Does this mean Nintendo is cashing in on Samus' female aspect?
I'm willing to bet you've never been to China. The lowest rate I was able to find for a room in Shenzen (just across from Hong Kong on the mainland side) at a decent hotel was about $60 per night. You can get a hostel in Hong Kong for $20 per night, but thats a hostel, not a "high end hotel suite".
The nouveau riche in China are creating a market for those types of luxuries, and the luxuries are priced with the knowledge of the people who buy them. I've lived in that part of the world and the way it works with luxuries is, if people will buy it, it is quite expensive; if nobody will buy it, it isn't available for purchase. It does not tend to be the case that luxury goods are available for cheap. What you get really cheap is labor, and labor intensive goods and services.
As long as we are randomly spouting "facts" about the damages to creativity inherent in using an interface, I'm going to point out that my artistic creativity has been seriously hampered by being forced to convey my written thoughts in a series of pre-determined archaic "letters". If I had been able to create my own words and letters, think of how much better my art skills would have been. Lets break down all conventions! Interfaces only work to constrain and limit communications.

from the center you see Windows, Linux from the left and MacOS from the right.
Personally I think Linux belongs on the center, and MacOS on the left. Let those on the right express their love of big business via Windows.
Smart voice recognition? Anyone tried it lately? Anyone tried to write pretty standard letters with it? Desastrous.

You are right. Hollywood loves and embraces risky movies.

No way in hell will Hollywood ever spend 100s of millions on a flick where the main character never shows his face.
Yes, that is exactly what I said in the sentence you quoted. Glad we agree :)

No, the idea is that the spaceship or whatever is generating the relativistic particle that is the cosmic ray.
From TFA:
The steam will be shipped as a frozen concentrate in order to preserve freshness.
