  1. App Geometry on KDE 4.3 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

Did they fix the ability to specify a geometry when starting an app (like Konsole) AND have it honored?

In 4.2 you could specify it, but it was ignored.

  2. Velcro strips on Cable Management To Defeat Clutter? · · Score: 4, Informative

Velcro strips to bundle the cables work quite well (IMHO). The desk furniture I use (ikea) has room between the desk frame and the surface to thread the velcro strips through to hold it close under the desk.

I've used velcro in racks too -- very convenient when you are constantly changing cabling.

  4. Ath5k wifi issues on Ubuntu 9.04 RC Released · · Score: 1

Any chance that the ath5k driver will be fixed for the Acer Aspire One (8.9")? It's getting better -- the machine no longer hangs with the capslock led flashing.. :) But updating to the RC and attempting to do large transfers still results in the occasional buffer corruption (invalid CRCs).

  5. On AAO? on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Now In Beta · · Score: 1

Have they solved the problems of wired networking on the AAO? Since they broke it with a patched up Intrepid (though the original unpatched Intrepid works).

  6. Support for multiple XScreens gone on KDE Project Invites Ideas With Online Brainstorm · · Score: 1

My biggest complaint with KDE4.x is the loss of support for multiple X screens. My configuration is 3 monitiors on 2 NVidia cards. 2 of the monitors are configured as XScreen 0 with TwinView, and the other is on the second card configured as XScreen 1. KDE 3.5 handled this perfectly and I had the desktop spread across all 3 monitors. KDE 4.X doesn't have support for multiple XScreens (and last time I looked nobody was working on it).

It's not like we're located close to Downtown Galaxy. We live out on the edge. There's probably some galactic equivalent of AT&T or Comcast that is telling everyone else "We'll be providing them with service 'soon'. So our monopoly is justified."

Either that or the installer showed up and we were too busy/unaware to answer the door. So they said they'd be back later.

  22. Aeron and RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) on Best Chair For Desktop Coding? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've owned an Aeron for several years. I used to sit in it for 8 to 10 hours a day working. After a couple of years I started experiencing the symptoms of RLS. Very annoying. I went to docs for the usual diagnostics/drugs. Nothing really helped.

One day my wife was talking to the manager of a Relax The Back store and my RLS came up. Upon hearing that I used an Aeron chair he said "That could be the problem. The way the front area of the chair where the legs go over is designed can cause problems with circulation and such." (I heard this second hand from my wife). I switched to a more traditional office chair. Within a month my RLS symptoms were gone.

So no scientific proof and I haven't felt like switching back to see the Aeron was the problem. But I'm a lot happier now.

    Times are changing.

An example is the defibrillator. It used to be that only medical professionals were able to purchase/use them. Now there are several such as the Phillips HeartStart that are sold on Amazon. The units are designed so that the average idiot can use them. Slap the pads on the victim's chest, hit the big button, and the unit figures out if the victim needs a shock, and if so gives it. Otherwise it doesn't.
