When it comes to PC's I think you're a bit wrong there. I have a 4 yr old noteBook that I use as a desktop replacement at home. I still game a lot on it. Granted the games are not Doom, World of Warcraft or Half Life 2, but I am still able to play many games like Serious Sam, Age of Mythology, Warcraft 3, Hitman 2.
The cost of gaming depends on what types of games you play. I mostly play strategy based games which don't require an insane video card.
I think it is necessary to produce something tangible in order to grant a patent for it; Otherwise idiots like NTP will still be able to abuse the patent system. Individual inventors don't have the funds to strech lawsuits to 3 yrs so that ppl can come to a conclusion.
On the other hand, I completly dislike patents. I don't think they foster innovation at all, rather they hinder it. The only people that profit from patents are Lawyers.
Here in Canada, we don't have machines like those, but I'm not sure if I'd even use them. We just have simple ATMs that accept cheques, bill payments, and dispense cash for free (well at least my bank).
But the only thing I actually use them for is dispensing money once in a blue moon because everyone here accepts debit or credit cards. And maybe sometimes cashing in a goverment tax refund cheque.
As far as bill go, we can pay them all online for free with my bank.
If we go by the logic that you provided, then we shouldn't let everyone get an education. We should also not let anyone create a web page, wouldn't we hate it if every Tom, Dick and Harry has a voice and is so creative that he just mimics something that someone has already done. We should make a lot of commodities affordable because who knows what will happen if all these ppl purchasing power. I can go on and on... You sound like one of those Professors who only give out X number of A's and X amount of B's just to make his course seem hard.
The point the Parent who you replied to has, is that the patent system is broken vastly. Right now the patent system doesn't really benefit the individual innovator or the Businesses which they are supposed to protect but the lawyers. These are ppl who neither finance or innovate a given product, but seem to make the most out of it. The patents given are so vague that they seem to cover a wide range of existing technologies. Patents are given without a prototype. Patents contain obfuscated language. Patents issued seem overlap other patents issued. Patents issued even though prior art exists.
I would definetly grab a DVD of a movie that I would like to see. That way I can afforably eat food while at the theatre. Pause the movie if something comes up. Not have to hear annoying ppl talk so see them walk by. As for the sound quality, most speakers out there are quite decent. And if the story is really good, you don't really care about the sound that much since you are immersed into the movie.
my first reaction to the dust issue was why not use water. But then I was thinking, won't spraying water on the sensors just cause you to have big clogs of dust on the sensor due to water droplets?
A lot of things seems trivial to implement in theory, but in actuality physical and environmental constraints seem to introduce a whole different ball game. A big congrats to all the teams who entered.
One thing that I noticed from the article is that one of the teams has problems with dust accumulating on the sensors. How would one get rid of this dust, so that you don't recieve incorrect readings?
I honestly wish I knew about this when I was in High School. This guy used to pick on me a lot. On one occasion, he just came a pushed me from behind real hard and I sprained my ankle.
Argh.. some kids are so cruel. And the ones that just watch while other get bullied are just as much at fault.
He stopped buggin me after I started fighting back and the teacher caught us.
We need something like this in Canada do. Right now we have a representative of the queen here in Canada. It is one of the most retarded and useless positions in Canada.
Why is somone who is not democratically elected, in a political office.
The problem is not all profs put their notes online; a number of them expect you to take notes. If I'm writing stuff down with a pen or pencil, I find it extremely hard to understand my notes at a later time. Additionally, its hard to actually keep up with what the instructor is writing since half the time he/she is blocking what they are writing.
I touch type, thus I find it extremely easy to look at what the instructor is saying and type. Additionally I can actually read my notes later on.
I think this big fiasco would be solved if instructors like you actually provide a copy of your lecture notes after class.
I completly understand how you feel. I was bullied a lot in school. One one hand, I think there should be freedom of choice, but on the other hand, it reminds me of jackasses from the old days.
I'm actually thinking of going the same route. I have a degree in software engineering and another which is a mix of computer and telecomm engineering. I have a bunch of great ideas, but I have no idea on how to implement them, i.e. start of my own company; which if why I'm thinking of getting my MBA.
Anyway I was just wondering how much an MBA from school X is really worth, if you plan on being your own boss for a tech startup? Does an MBA from a more renowned school matter more than a less renowned school?
If I do go about with the tech startup idea, what things should I look out for?

Ekiga 2.0 Released

Actually, you're not the only one who is confused by Ekiga. I think its a really cool name. The problem lies with the website and its FAQ on what Ekiga is. It tells me about SIP and H.323 bla bla, but that doesn't tell me what it really is. I had to lookup wikipedia to find out that its a video conferencing tool.

In 1999 actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry/
I hear all these stories on /. about the US patent system being broken. What about the Canadian patent system? Anyone here have any problems?

You hit the nail right on the head.

I'm not a Ruby developer, the most I've done is just skimmed over some Ruby tutorials. I like the ease and simplicity of the Ruby syntax.
Is it possible to make stand-alone, executable apps in Ruby? What about GUI?
hmm.. cause I haven't signed up for youTube. I can do searches for videos, as well as view them, and I don't even need to login.
The poster mentioned youTube. I frequently visit youTube when I get bored but I have never seen a single ad there? Where are the revenues coming from?

very interesting product.. I'll check it out when I get home..
Its nice to have some rapid development tool, but is Flex efficient to use? Is it completly flash based?
Just asking.
good to know :)

nm.. I see that you were replying to someone else, my bad. Slashdot made it seem that you were replying to me, since it hid the previous comment.
thats what I was trying to say.. the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were created long before Mohammed.
don't worry.. the Arabs didn't come up with the number system. They just adopted the number system used by the Indians.
