There are a few problems with that list. Stuff like the respite gardens existed way before. Remember the hanging gardens of Babylon. Also, whoever compiled that list assumed that everyone in the middle east is muslim. A bunch of those inventions were invented way before Arabs were actually followers of Islam. The Arabs were not follows of Islam before. The number system originated in India, and since the Indians traded with the Arabs, the Arabs adopted it. But credit is given to the Arabs for the number system. Just a few noticed faults.
From the PhysOrg article: "The results, recorded by spectrometers and confirmed by computer models created by John Apruzese and colleagues at Naval Research Laboratory, have held up over 14 months of additional tests. "
What I don't understand is how these spectrometers even worked at these tempearatures, I would expect most things to go kaput at these temperatures.
In Canada, we spend a lot on social programs, compared to most parts of the world. However, there will always be people that fall through the holes. Be it drug addiction, spousal abuse, family issues, mental illness. Its kind of sad, but a lot of homeless ppl are ppl with mental problems.
Altough the parent has been marked funny, you're right on the money. CG is getting outsourced. A cousin of mine who works as a CG person in India, and she does CG work for big names, even Disney.
Did you know that the simpson cartoons are drawn in S.Korea, because its too expensive to do it in the US.
Sorry to be a bit off topic here, but what are people that are new grads and Computer Engineers/Firmware Developers making in Canada?
I gradded in 2004 with a B.Sc in Software Engineering and another which was a combination of Telecomm and Computer Engineering.
Right now I'm making about $33K. I started off as a web developer, but now I do network layer programming for servers and microcontrollers. My company is pretty new and a startup.
This seems to be a really dumb move. Its basically telling the world that its ok for the US to take over foreign companies, but its not ok for foreign companies to take over a US business.
What doesn't make sense is Snort is OPEN SOURCE. So if someone wanted to do something to the US computers, they would have already done so. There are lots of highly skilled network layer programmers all over the world that are capable of reporducing snort's functionality. This deal will just screw the US company involved, nothing more.
Ok, since the original speculation on the orgami device was a bit off. Are there any other devices out there in the market that include a Digital Camera+Video Recorder(min of 4MP and 10X optical zoom), 5GB HDD, GSM Phone, PDA + MP3 player?
I was very impressed with the Ubuntu live CD's when Ubuntu just started. I popped it into my laptop and it was able to detect my wireless card, and everythign just worked. I was able to browse the internet with no worries.
Basically, most of the CPU power I need will be for watching a DVDs, listening to music, mapping GPS coordinates to a map and logging video data. The most I'll probarbly be doing at one time would be: Listening to music and getting my GPS data, as well as logging video data while driving. For the video data part, its just a small camera, so that if I ever get into an accident.. I have actual evidence of what went on.
Actually I had no idea. I've never really done development on a Mac Platform except in HS for a couple of weeks, which was a long time ago. Thanks for the tip..:)
ISU chose Lenovo because of its superior service and support, the quality of ThinkPad notebooks and the advanced wireless capabilities of the PCs.
ThinkPads help simplify the network connectivity process through ThinkVantage Access Connections 4.1, which helps mobile users set up and automatically switch from one available network connection to the next.
Umm... the DLINK pcmcia card that I had in my notebook in 2002 had the same ability...Nothing that advanced about it anymore.
But on the issue of having a laptop in school, it was quite helpful. Its so hard to find a free computer in school. And then you have to deal with the fact that a lot of stuff is disabled. And then also the issue of finding that piece of software to do your project. Too much BS. Having a laptop is the way to go. But what about classes that need special software? Not everyone can afford to just buy all the software needed for school.
Hi,
I suggest that you try out Mantis. The company I work at used to use Bugzilla before but the interface was overly complicated and fugly to look at and nobody really ended up using it. Right now we use Mantis at work and its quite a change from bugzilla. Very decent interface. It has an advaned and a simple mode as well. http://www.mantisbt.org/
I was interested in a mac mini with an intel duo chip, I love the entire hardware setup. It has everything that I need for an in car computer. However, the price is something that is a bit too much for me. Frankly I don't need all those packages that apple is throwing with the mac mini for in car use, except maybe the DVD player and music player software. The rest will probarbly be my own.
Are there any similar alternatives that are similar in size and hardware, out there that I can buy for a cheaper price. I've come across a nano ITX board that is about 4.5 x 4.5 inches but not any complete systems.
Any ideas?
If I do decide to go with the macMini route, are there any OpenSource IDE's out there?
Before I get called a MS lover, I program on Linux and Windows at work. Windows for embedded programming and Linux for everything else.
I can think of a bunch of reasons: Bad driver support. Lack of adoption of automated installation tools. Lack of core/common tools easily visible (simple stuff like a file system explorer or search). Lack of easy to install software Lack of ease when it comes to updating. Complex folder naming convention in root folder (bin, boot, dev, etc, home, lib, mnt,usr)
Its easy for me to do the tasks above because I know what to do. But its not that easy for the average Joe. Average Joe shouldn't have to know how the computer and software works, he should just be able to use it.
I think you're wrong in your thinking. Not everybody uses CD for copying music. I buy my music in stores and then rip them to MP3 format and upload it to my MP3 player. I use my CDs for backups.
You know music is not the only thing people use CD's for, there are tons of other uses. What about ppl in the software industry? A lot of software is pirated, why aren't these people being compensated as well?
Maybe while you're doing that, have a tax on paper, because people could use paper to photocopy books. Or how about giving everyone who uses the road a speeding ticket, because some people speed. And the list can go on and on.
What I'm trying to get at is, the CD is a medium to store data. Why should I be made to pay for something I am not guilty of?
I'm not sure why everyone rejoices when some government organization goes OSS. The only reason they go OSS is because they don't have to pay a single dime for it. Ask them how much they are donating towards the project because it has helped them, and the answer will probarbly be $0. If you worked on an OSS project that helped your town/community, how much of a tax break do you think they are going to give you? My guess is 0. They'll probarbly have 200 different townhall meetings before they come to a conclusive decision on giving a tax break.
Don't be fooled to easily, the last thing they care about is the OSS movement, they just want something for free..
What the hell is up with that stupid pointless flash animation...
anyway, a device like this is long overdue..
I have been looking for a device which is a:
* digital camera
* video camcorder
* smartphone
* MP3 player
* PDA
Hopefully this device has something better than a 4MP resolution with at least 4X optical zoom. It they wanna make it a video camcorder, they better bump up the optical zoom to at least 10X. The MP3 Player batter at least have a 5GB HDD.
I' willing to pay about a $1000 dollars for such a device instead of pay $400 for PDA, another $300 for a Digital Camera, another $300 for an MP3 Player and another $200 for a cell phone. If they add decent video capability, I'd be willing to spend $1500 for a device that has it all.
My cousin purchased a CD from EMI Music, but since he doesn't have a Discman, he tried to rip the music to MP3, however the CD wouldn't let him. It came with some software to rip the music to WMA format. Then he tried to load the music to his iPOD, which is also supposed to convert the WMA to MP3 I think. But it didn't allow him because the music was copyright protected. Stuff like this just screws the consumer.
I think ppl like Tangent have to realize that the users are not idiots and will use whatever the hell comes with thier computers.
My computer came with Windows Media Player, IE and Outlook Express but guess what.. I use winamp, firefox and thunderbird.
I think these guys just wanna make a quick buck. Users have the opportunity to just buy Word and Excel seperately if they want to. They have an option NOT to include Outlook.
Additionally, what I don't get is that I did a search online for Tangnet Inc and I found this company: http://www.tangent.com/products/index.htm/ They are a MS Partner.
In a filing with the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Tangent claimed Microsoft continues to engage in anticompetitive conduct and has caused it damages by "increasing, maintaining or stabilizing the price [Tangent] paid for Microsoft's operating system software above competitive levels."
So what are they doing? Increasing or maintaining or stabilizing the price? Make up your minds.
Tangent claimed relief under the Sherman Act and cited recent US Department of Justice and European Commission criticism of Microsoft's failure to provide third parties with relevant technical documentation, as evidence that the company continues to prevent interoperability with non-Windows systems.
umm.. MS is a software company, and all its software runs on windows, why should it care about its products running on Linux? Its like saying GM is not providing enough tech info so that I can make my car inter operate with Toyota
There is more to the subconcious mind than just sleeping on it.
When I am programming, usually my subconcious mind takes over and does all the calculations or logical references and storage of variables. What goes where and what are the possible outcomes of a bunch of different paths etc. But then I get out of my subconcious state and try to figure out what I did, its like WTH.. how did I even think about that?
I started to realize this when I started to play chess, when I started keeping track of different moves and possible outcomes for each move etc.

So does this mean the British patent system is broken too. They issued a patent without a working prototype. Or unless, they did get it working??
Go to a site, get phished, find the jackasses behind it, round them up together, and beat them with a stick...
Actually the live science article is missing the most vital info.
I read this article on PhysOrg.com http://www.physorg.com/news11538.html (yes I'm to lazy to HTML'ize that link)

If I were you, I'd go for Edbuntu, but before you go and install it on all the sytems, please check that it works on one system properly.
Product page http://www.edubuntu.org/
Tour http://www.edubuntu.org/tour.html
there is a bunch of software available to teach these kids on Edbuntu
