  1. Awesome on Bone Game Announced by Ex-Lucasarts Team · · Score: 5, Insightful

Bone has always been awesome and if Jeff Smith is working as closely with the team as TFA suggests, this game should be awesome. How can you lose with the guy who invented Phoney and the people who made Day of The Tentacle?

  2. I'm not sure how to feel about this one. on California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car · · Score: 1

On one hand, it seems to me that charging people only for what they use is reasonable. On the other, there MUST be a better way to charge by the mile than tracking everyone all the time. Not only would that cost billions to impliment, but it also is for too intrusive. Something hooked up to the odometer seems more reasonable to me. On yet another hand, these people using less gas should be rewarded! It is a limited resource whose limits become more apparent each year and its use and harvesting are having detrimental effects on the environment. Also, hybrids are generally light vehicles and cause less wear to the road then, say, a gigantic SUV (whose owner, at least here in Oregon, gets a tax break if they drive more than 15 miles to work in it) which has snow tires on from November to March. On second thought, screw this. We should reward these people, not make every attempt we can to suck them dryer than a gas pump in 30 years.

  3. How hot? on Prospects For the CELL Microprocessor Beyond Games · · Score: 1

One unconfirmed report claims that at the extreme end of the frequency/voltage/power spectrum, one sample CELL processor was observed to operate at 5.6 GHz with 1.4 V Vdd and consumed 180 W of power.
I'm not sure about the die dimensions or what kind of cooling system will be used, but isn't that a lot of heat to dissapate? I may have to trade my P4/toaster oven in for a Cell if they're hot enough.

  5. Re:RGB to CMYK on GIMP 2.2 Released · · Score: 1

There's loss in the conversion, though. When making an image for print it just makes more sense to use the program that is built for it and is (argueably) better at what it does and easier to use.
Also, I meant that most home printers read RGB profiles, not use RGB ink. RGB ink would get you a lot of brown.

  6. Re:Seriously... Why would you use this? on GIMP 2.2 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

The biggest problem that I have with the GIMP is the complete lack of CMYK support. RGB is all well and good if what you're working with will only be displayed on a computer screen or printed on an RGB prtiner (which most home printers are these days). Big, high quality pro level printers on the other had use CMKY and if you try and print an RGB image on a CMKY printer it will look like crap. A big, steamy pile of miscolored crap.
But it's ok for other stuff and does have some cool features and plugins that Photoshop doesn't. But as long as I've got a license for PS, I'll stick with it.

I, also work with a lot of pre-press and general printing prep. One thing you have to keep in mind is that you have no clue what the ad looks like. If its flashy and eye catching then it seems very likely to me that it would take 15+ minutes to render a full newspaper page. Especially if it is a double page. Recently, rendering an image that was 30" by 41" took well over an hour on a brand new Dual 2.5 ghz G5 with 4 gigs of ram. Also, they might be making it with The GIMP and well... it's The GIMP. Not exactly the fastest imaging program on Earth.

I always like the idea of Bluetooth, though I'm afraid I saw this coming. I don't know why it was never adopted on a wider scale, but I certainly hope that other short distance wireless technologies (like WUSB) do take off. It would be nice to have a desktop with no wires except for power.

Does anyone remember the TV commercials when the last generation of iMacs came out that compared the range of screen motion of an iMac and the Dell equivaltent? Basically, they were doging on the Dells for not being all flexible and poseable, but now they have gone with what appears to me to be pretty much the same design. Am I off my rocker, or has Apple reversed the typical cycle of innovation and repication?

The only caveot: I own a 4g iPod. When are people going to learn that for the majority of people it doesn't matter if it's better than the sexy little iPod in features, size or look. It's not an iPod. Apple did two things in making the iPod: They made a pretty decent product with an easy interface and they also made an image of chic youth. I'm afraid that Rio has only done 1/2 of this. Until they come out with a better marketing capaign, they simply will not unseat the iPod.

Wait... what? Have you actually used a click wheel iPod? I have one and it's so easy to use I can do it with either my left or right hand.
What you might be thinking of is the mechanical wheel that was on the first iPods. That indeed did suck. The click wheel is nothing more than a touch wheel on a rocker with contacts under the four cardinal directions. I owned a Nomad Jukebox before this iPod and THAT was an interface you need two hands to operate.
Really, the only way I can see someone being unable to operate the click whieel is if they had really tiny hands. And maybe if they were missing a few fingers, too. Or maybe a Bob Dole style war injury. Bob Dole.
