Do you think that more people are reading books that used to in the past? Honestly, while I read heavily and my wife reads twice as much as I do, almost no one else I see on a regular basis reads all that much. Only 1 out of about 20 coworkers reads when he has a break at work.
I have no evidence, but it seems to me that literacy is plunging dramatically, and the most challenging thing that most people read is the text of instant messages on their phones, most of which is likely misspelled:P
I gave up about halfway through because it was so *boring*. It was always listed as a classic masterpiece, but I just don't see it. Its nowhere near the worst I have read (Frank Herbert's The Green Brain comes to mind there) but it sure was not engaging at all. Either time I tried to read it.
The problem isn't the "pile of garbage" - which I agree is a fair description of MS Windows in earlier incarnations - its the user base and their reliance on all of the software which is MS Windows based. This would free people from relying on Microsoft over time. Now, is it better to switch to new tools under a more reliable OS, of course it is. Realistically though, most users - particularly business users - are not going to take the plunge and switch from using software they understand to something new that may or may not suit their needs. Arguably this might mean they ignore ReactOS if its ever completed as well. Microsoft has a stranglehold on the majority of computer users, because its all they know. They rely on MS Office, and other business programs to meet their needs. Where those programs are cross platform then the possibility of switching exists perhaps, but seldom will you find a user who has *all* of their key programs being cross platform and who perceives a need to switch. Personally speaking, I switched to an iMac desktop 5 years ago and haven't regretted the decision yet. I do all my actual computing on the Mac side, and use Bootcamp to boot to Win7 to play games (which is all I think Windows is really useful for). Other people will of course differ. I have tried to use Linux on many occasions as my desktop but prefer OS/X after extensive use. On the server side I prefer Linux to all other OSes I have tried.
I am quite happy someone wants to clone Windows to the point where a user can't tell that MS Windows has been replaced by ReactOS. Sort of like a Folger's commercial from way back when. If they ever complete the project and get a viable version of it, then they have produced a version of Windows that can be run by anyone anywhere without violating Microsoft's copyright etc. It might piss of MS but it would mean and end to them pointing out how popular software piracy is based on the number of illegal copies of MS Windows there are out there, particularly in the third world. It would also open the door to fixing a lot of the problems that MS ignored, and perhaps they are doing this as they develop it for that matter. I can't see more free software hurting in any way at any rate, and this lets people capitalize on all the useful software they may currently rely on without having to change or learn new things. User's don't seem to like learning new things unless they are trivial to absorb.
Actually Bolden said during his address after the landing that 4 other countries had been involved in some way in the Curiousity landing but that he "wasn't going to say who they are", with no reason provided.
Good point, I had forgotten it was more or less ordained.
As for the partial server logs, remember that whole confusing "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" statement when all along he claimed to be uninterested in PvP entirely? Very confusing. His followers seemed to be heavily into PvP mind you...
I think its also important that the poor people in the society are aware that there is no reason that they *must* be that poor except that the system (tax laws, political structure and who has influence etc) is set up by the rich and wealthy and that they are using it to ensure they remain rich and wealthy and that the poor remain barely able to get by. This is what I see in North America at the moment, and what the Occupy folks were upset about. The system is unequal, inherently so, and thus while its possible for a poor person to make themselves wealthy, the deck is stacked against a lot of the population who don't see the opportunity to do so, and thus have less hope. The economic news I note a lot these days is the media pointing out how many executives are being grossly overpaid, or getting massive yearly bonuses etc. The reality I see on the street is small business after small business going out of business, and their part of the market being taken over by massive corporations like Walmart or Amazon. I have no evidence, but it seems to me that our economy is rotting from the bottom up. To add fuel to the flames of course, we have commercial advertising which creates demands for products that everyone wants, the poor can't afford etc. The solution of course is to buy on credit (i.e. with money you don't have) and thus ensure you remain in debt and thus tied to your social and economic situation.
I dunno, in the end the Roman Empire guild crucified him after all. Besides its not entirely clear that he was the son of the server admin, there's been these confusing references to an account named Holy Ghost, as well as the Jesus account and the Admin account itself of course, suggesting that all three are "one, but separate" etc. Might be the same player administering the server and then playing on 2 other accounts as well.
Those same politicians who approved the bailouts might find themselves on the boards of directors for those financial institutions that got bailed out eh? Up here in Canada, we have the problem that Harper doesn't like scientific research that has any chance of restricting those things he has decided to implement or change. So anything related to the environment is being stiffled as best as he can, because he wants to ensure that the Embridge pipeline goes through and Alberta (his home province) makes its 550b in profits over the next 10 years. It doesn't matter how hazardous Fracking may or may not be, it doesn't matter the risk to the BC environment or the Pacific Coastal regions etc. Its easier to shut down the environmental groups and legislate that scientists must get approval from the PMs office before they can discuss *any* research or findings on anything to do with climate change or environmental issues. And when he retires (if that ever happens), he will end up on the board of directors for Embridge or similar companies.
No, I am someone who was very impressed with an Apple product - actually all of them so far that I have tried, after years of having to fuck around with PC systems and Microsoft Windows/DOS. I hate the way people have to slam anyone who is happy with Apple, just because they are using an Apple product. On my iMac desktop I can run FOSS, I can run a lot of Linux utilities etc. It is a *nix based system even if it has a pretty front end. I can also dual boot into Win7 when I need to - mostly for games mind you. Whats wrong with stating that OS/X did something right that was impressive? Is it perfect? no, but it meets my needs. I have been using the same iMac for the last 5 years. In the same time period I would have quite likely spent the difference in buying a PC system in terms of replaced/upgraded motherboards, powersupplies, CPUs etc. The only thing I have had to replace is the HD. I have used Linux in various ilks in the past, FreeBSD, Apache, PHP, Java, etc. I use the right tool for the job whenever I can. In my case, using an iMac desktop that freed me up to actually work on the computer, rather than a PC running MS windows or a Linux machine (that didn't support some things I wanted) was the right way to go because I got more done in the end, with less configuring and repairing along the way.
I was *so* impressed with Apple years ago. My wife had an older OS/X laptop and had just bought a new one. The old one was running when she booted up the new one and during the setup process (all of about 3 minutes to be on the web), it popped up a dialog stating it noticed another laptop was running nearby and would we like to transfer the user settings and data from that machine to this one? Click yes and it was done in no time. After years of fucking around with Windows systems, it was a joy to see something like that done right. Actually, thats the way I think of OS/X mostly - it works the way I want it to most of the time, and the rest of the time I pay it no attention because its not malfunctioning. I readily admit MS has made great leaps and bounds between Win7 and WinXP, but its still not as polished.
And keep in mind - without intending to Godwin this discussion - that IBM had dealings with the Nazis in Germany before the war helping them gather information on their citizens. Not saying anything like that about the US Gov't-Google relationship, just that companies gathering or processing government information on their citizens can go horribly wrong:P
I was confused. I am prepared to believe the Koch Foundation on this because I think Global Warming exists and we are the primary cause of it. We would be the solution but I don't think we can ever organize ourselves enough to solve the problem - politicians think too shortterm and only want to be reelected. Pushing policies that will be unpopular with their constituents and their supporters (Corporations) will not result in reelection.
I think that people who believe the Koch Brothers on anything are being suckered - i.e. they are "Koch Suckers":)
That lets us list artists and whether or not they are enslaved to one of these organizations. Make it an easy way to check who its safe to buy from, and to clearly indicate which artists are recording for one of these Organized Crime media companies. A useful tool to let folks speak with their wallets.
I don't buy any music at all. I also don't download it. I don't listen to it anymore unless it happens to interrupt the talk radio stuff I do listen to (mostly CBC here in Canada).
According to the RCMP: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/res-rec/deaths_deces-eng.htm between 1987 and 1996 there were approximately 183 firearm related homicides per year. According to WP ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate ), we have about 0.76 deaths per 100k (by comparison the US has 4.14 but then you also have 10x the population). I personally only know 2 people who I know to own a firearm of any type. My uncle has an old.22 that belonged to me as a kid for use up on the farm - but I doubt he has used it in years for anything, and I know a friend that I knew a long time ago who collected Lee-Enfield Rifles and owned a few pistols for the range. That's it otherwise though. Firearms are just not that common in Canada except in the north, out in the wilderness/countryside etc.
Sadly a lot of users out there on the intertoobs don't seem to have any original thoughts, beliefs or ideas. Reposting something that someone else found is a way to seem active, and doesn't require much thought.
I am far more concerned about the proliferation of endless pages that are designed only to echo content to gain page rank for some pointless website I have little interest in, or to garner the display of as many ads as possible. Often I will be reading something that I find interesting but when I follow a link in the text - or in the sidebar - I get a page that is an aggregate of pointless links (but has ads) and if I try to click on the link to the original thing that interested me, I get yet another page and so on and so on. There is a massive amount of this dreck out there on the web, and I think its sole purpose is to gain pagerank mostly. When the internet was academic primarily, there was not much data but it was perhaps a bit more informative, now that we have the commercial internet the bulk of the it seems to be almost devoid of purpose and content. The LOLCat meme and others like it - endless motivational posters etc - is at least created by someone who thought it was funny and hoped to create a meme that lasts. Its tiring and its jumped the shark IMHO but its far preferable to webpages without meaning or purpose.
I am not typical of most gamers I admit. At the moment the only thing I am playing is City of Heroes/Villains (it recently went Free to Play, but I played it from Beta pretty much for 5 years, and am now revisiting it). Using the Mac version of the game its occasionally laggy but I don't tend to PvP much so its only annoying sometimes. Still a great game with the best group combat system I have seen. For the past 10 years or so I have mostly played this and other MMORPGs (not WOW mind you, tried that in beta and for the first month and decided it sucked). If there is an OS/X version I run that, or if needs be I can boot into Windows to run it there.
Graphically, this system is running an ATI Radeon HD2600 with 256MB of VRAM and it seems to do the job for my needs.
Its probably at the end of its life as far as playing any games other than those of COH level, but to be honest its a perfectly workable computer for any standard non-gaming use. In that regard I can probably run it for another 5 years.
The original paper describing the so-called God particle was supposed to be titled "The Goddamn Particle" because of how difficult it was to prove it existed, but the publisher said that Higgs could not use "Goddamn" in the title, and shortened it.
Precisely. I used PCs running various flavours of DOS and Windows for years. I was constantly upgrading drivers, fixing problems, updating my components etc. I liked being in control of my hardware, but the net result was a lot of time spent making the computer work. Eventually I decided to try an iMac desktop. I love it. yes, I give up the ability to upgrade components, but on the plus side I have had this desktop for 5 years or so and it still meets all my computing needs including gaming. I no longer spend 10-20% of my time fixing something that broke mysteriously. It just works and I can get on with doing what I want to do.
I also ran various distros of Linux, FreeBSD, even tried out Solaris briefly. When the need could be met by FOSS, I used it, and still do. When the need could be met by commercial software, I used that if I thought it worked better. Eventually I switched to running an iMac that runs OS/X and I am happy with that. I bought an Apple TV, my wife has an iPad, we are happy with those.
That however is apparently "drinking the koolaid" and I must be put down for enjoying the product I paid for. What fucking bullshit. You know, sometimes when companies really work hard to develop a decent product, it turns out to be decent, and worth the money they charge. Apple is doing that for me, and so long as they continue to do that I will likely buy their products, but when that is no longer true, or something better comes along I will buy that instead. For me, nothing has so far.
from the RIAA over the money due each time this virus strikes, I mean sheesh, that could amount to a lot of cash right? And the recording industry is hurting what with the trillions of dollars they say they are losing every year to piracy. Or maybe thats the idea, they will sic the RIAA on the Iranians and save the US military the effort:P

Its only going to climb higher. I am up in Canada, but its the same here, all I see is businesses closing, programs being cut, the only jobs available seem to be for crap wages with no benefits etc. The economy is failing from the bottom up as the small businesses die off one by one. Meanwhile of course, the high end executives get massive yearly bonuses as a matter of course - even if the company they are working at is tanking and likely to go under.
I think this is very promising as a discovery and hopefully works to cure HepC in humans, but I too doubt it will ever see the light of day if it works. The healthcare industry in the US has far too much at stake to start allowing cures rather than expensive treatments that take a liftetime of purchasing drugs instead. I have no faith in the pharmaceutical industry in general.
