  3. No on Should Linux Use Proprietary Drivers? · · Score: 1

I would hate to see Linux development fall behind the power curve. I mean it has taken this long to get Linux up to where its considered a viable replacement for other desktops; I'd hate to see it take a hit and get dropped back in terms of being able to keep up.

Yes its ideology promotes (and almost dictates) being totally open, but until it gains a much larger portion of the desktop market, I don't think it'd be wise to try and request/suggest/force/dictate that hardware manufacturers let their drivers out as open source.

To meet all the prerequisites listed in the article, how about: mini-itx form factor, linux, mythtv. Bingo. No full sized pc needed, it'll record your shows like a Tivo box, it'll play your mp3's, it'll play your dvd's, it'll let you burn off your shows to dvd, and everything else you might need.

And it'll be cheaper to boot!

Oh, but gee...it won't be Windows or Intel certified...shucks!

I think the difference between the indie movie he mentions and the typical Hollywood mega-bux picture is story line. If you have a good story line, you don't necessarily have to pump mega-millions into the pic.

Bring back good writing and yes the cost per film will drop.

Keep throwing flash and glam into pics like many of the recent Hollywood money-black-holes and the price will only keep going up.

Flash and glam do not (always) a good movie make.

Supposedly we have an uber top secret project has been ongoing for 16 years. We have a group that has been probing into it for the full time. Maybe the group got close and the gov't decided to release info that it has been "shelved". The group redeems itself by posting the information and stops following the secret program. The gov't smiles and continues without watchful eyes.

    Maybe?

I know there will be lots of "not fair" and "monopoly" lawsuits on the way, but if anything its interesting that they are admitting to it.

From what I've seen in other semi similar items, stuff like this gets coded in but never mentioned by the manufacturer...until they get caught. Its interesting that they are willing to bring it out in the open without having to reverting to backdooring the competition (i.e. AMD).

I think they missed a point of one of the reasons for the irritability and grumpiness. I don't know about you, but pretty much the only people I see are the ones that are having problems and are pissed that they cannot get their work done. Granted its the nature of the business, but being understaffed (which is typical) and hearing nothing but complaints all day kinda lays the groundwork for being grumpy.

How about somebody write a book to give to the USERS to help them 1) document the error message, 2) learn how to unjam a printer, 3) how to change their own cartridges, 4) etc, etc. The list is huge.

Don't bitch about our grumpiness...its the only thing we have to fall back on under the scowls of all the users.

Actually I've always wondered why the retailers the pay for spam to be sent out aren't targeted. The spammer is, quite honestly, the middleman. If we attack the head (the company paying the spammer), spam should be reduced.

Does anybody know if there is a blacklist of these companies? I'd love to add their names to my proxy to block anybody from my office from going back to their sites.

Might take a bit longer to kill the problem, but anything would help...

Personally I'm embarrassed at how ineffective our government has become. Sure they all tout that they act in a bi-partisan manner, but that is nothing more than the politically correct verbiage buzz word that they pretty much have to use.

Truth is that if you check just about any vote that has occurred over the last several years, you'll see that the votes are broken straight down the party lines -- except for a few that probably hit the wrong key during the vote.

Perfect example is the vote that happened yesterday for the new proposed Supreme Court Justice Alito. The vote was divided 100% down the party lines.

These people should be ashamed. We elected them to represent the beliefs of the state in which they represent, but it seems to always turn out that they cannot think for themselves. Rather they just follow their party's guidance.
