While we can gather some information from ice cores, there are MANY potentially HUGE sources of error in this method.
Of course, a few dozen billion dollars have absolutely NO influence on the studies with "we're doing fine" results. And the "supposed precedents" of humans destroying their environment (The easter island, some prehispanic cities in Mexico, the anihilation of various sea species, and chernobyl) can obviously be dismissed as "accidental" and "non-relevant". Many scientists agree with me.
Now excuse me for a minute, I have a few things to do in my nuclear power plant... Smithers? my coat. - Yes, Mr. Burns.
Flaw #1: Any app can make arbitrary changes to the registry. Flaw #2: Any app can make arbitrary changes to the system files. Flaw #3: There is no "safe-mode" for core utilities, that would bypass any hijacking of system calls.
Now can anybody explain to me what was the point of having "system, readonly" attributes, if they can just be turned off?
Bill Gates never wanted to admit it. But this is just proof that Windows is nothing but MS-DOS "on steroids".
Till a few days ago, I thought Linux would be the doom of Microsoft, defeating it like David defeated Goliath. But it turns out.. Goliath is about to die from a genetic anomaly. His very nature gave him a short lifespan.
in such a case, you can challenge the validity of EULA, but you are using it "illegally" and thus are not owed support, even if you had paid for it.
In that case, Microsoft can be charged for monopolic practices: You have to buy windows to use office. In that case... screw them! I'll use open office from now on.
BTW, now that you guys mentioned Wine emulating XP, I wonder if I can run winamp under wine. If I can, I'll move to Redhat next week.
Call it Marlylin Manson, GTA, etc. (I'm not saying they're not bad... they're indeed a bad influence, IMHO). If parents don't educate their children, the media will.
Maybe they do right now, but with today's nanotrends, expect nanoscopic lasers being used to transfer information in a chip.
I give it about 20 years. Maybe in 25 we'll start seeing fully-functional optical microprocessors. But by that time there will be already cold microprocessors using nanotube-based transistors, and running with perhaps an AA battery or something.
I remember reading a couple of years ago about Windows activation codes. They were supposed to prevent piracy. But the problem is... what happens if someone GENERATES a "valid key" and the purchaser won't be able to registrate his copy?
And I think this is just what happened to you, my friend.
And yes, I think it sucks. You should ask for a refund.
What about voting? The key is getting organized. You could raise millions of unorganized voices and nobody will care. But organize yourselves and you'll have enough power to move the decisions made at the top level.
It works in all countries. At least the democratic ones.
I don't know why, but i have the feeling you're doing something that you shouldn't... Anyway, if you were a victim of domestic violence, you'd say otherwise. I'm tired of doomsayers with their "hey, they'll use it against us" arguments, when the matter in question is something completely different. Usually those who do already have an agenda.
After all, what's the difference of putting someone in prison than attaching him a GPS device? As long as he's under control, it's fine. Of course i'd prefer them to wear the tag AT the moment the restraining order is placed.
When(^H^H^H^H)if the FBI decide to use the GPS devices against common people, not criminals, THEN you can raise your voice. (But why not use your voice for something more productive, i.e. getting Bush out of the whitehouse?)

This is a problem for digital signatures, because somebody can sign one data stream, then distribute another with the same signature. So the signature doesn't guarantee the data has not been modified.
Building on those advancements, Gates announced Internet Explorer 7.0, designed to add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect. Internet Explorer 7.0 will also provide even stronger defenses against phishing, malicious software and spyware. The beta release is scheduled to be available this summer.
Extensibility and compatibility... by extensibility you could interpret "New more secure form of activex controls" and by compatibility "not breaking existing sites". Gates didn't say _A THING_ about standards support.
The reasoning: IE6 lost market not because of its poor standards support, but for its poor security. Ergo, they'll focus more on security reather than standards support. Bummer:(
Of course, I could dream and imagine cotton clouds and interpret those as "Yes, we WILL have CSS level2.1 and level 3 compatibility, and yes, PNG support". Believe me, I REALLY WISH it could happen, but Microsoft has turned me down so many times that I find it hard to believe.
(Argh! This feels like commiting suicide - requesting to mod down my own post... boo hoo. This happens for not RTFReplies like the one about the russians and the phages above).
Anyway, I just RTFA, and they say they removed 80% of the virus' code and used the rest as a carrier. As for the envelope, they used another virus' envelope to provide stability. Guess that takes the FUD away.
scientists have been using virii to cure certain diseases. For example, bacteriofages are a rather nifty alternative to antibiotics.
So they've just taken this approach and used HIV as their "fage". "canceriofages" if you prefer.
HOWEVER... something scares me. What happens if the modified HIV's mutate for any reason? i.e. in a pantient who already has HIV? (Or i'm just thinking FUD?)
I say we need more studies on the possible side effects of this new cancer "vaccine". Just to be safe.
You're right. These are the Game Joes. But they don't stop being Joes after all. Being a nerd or liking games doesn't make you a linux uber-genius automatically.
From the article:
This is a once-in-a-lifetime event
I bet the aliens who lived less than 10 light-years from there couldn't possibly deny what you just said.
In this regard a microkernel would be much better than either Linux or Windows.
Like L4Linux? It's Linux. It's microkernel. Best from both worlds.
1) Plug the probe onto your brain
2) try to pat your head with your right hand, rub your belly with your left hand, and scratch your neck with the robotic arm.

Until you understand the difference between "fossil records" and "climate data", you will never understand the debate.
Your assumption is that climate data is temporary and cannot be stored somewhere in the planet.
Now let me see. *ponders*
Ring study in VERY OLD trees...
layers study in VERY LONG ice blocks in the artic, or in sediments...
[sarcasm]Nope. Absolutely NO long-term data![/sarcasm]
how flawed this operating system is.

Crap! Well at least i'm warned now.
So if a girl signs a contract that says she has to be somebody's slave or engage in prostitution, is that contract legally valid?
No, if a law makes something illegal, any contract endorsing such unlawful behavior, becomes automatically void.
they could add a tax for internet-based sells, and charge the seller or something.

(BTW. First post!
end of the next week!? :( i didn't know Gentoo took a freaking week to install...
I don't see how that would change my Windows expirience on a day-to-day basis.

What the FUCK is wrong with this country?
Perhaps
Michael Moore's 'Bowling for Columbine' can give us some hints about what's wrong with it. There was an interview with Marylin Manson.
Call it Marlylin Manson, GTA, etc. (I'm not saying they're not bad... they're indeed a bad influence, IMHO). If parents don't educate their children, the media will.
Yeah, nice education, indeed.
*hummm* girl approaching.

Why not use SHA1 _AND_ MD5?
Or how about SHA1 and *seeded* SHA1?
Like SHA1("insert random string here"+text)
(where + is the concat operator)
Or maybe even better:
Sha1(md5(original text)+original text). Or...
sha1(sha1(original text)+md5(original text)+original text).
How about that, eh?
the probabilities of obtaining the same 320-bit string are one in (quoting Carl Sagan): "billions and billions".
Don't you mean FrontHenge?

How this new method will give us a disc that can be played in DVD's, but not in DVD-ROM drives?
Unless they tweak with the data-check sectors (which can be already circumvented - modchip, anyone?), I don't think it's possible.
