We should read some (ack!) Jack T. Chick tracts and see how they simplify stuff to present their point of view. I know, their stories suck and are full of lies - but at least they do good in marketing.
Having said this, I think the comic should have a more comedic approach, like having Shakespeare being interrupted by some lawyers because his works are patented or something. (Oh, wait, this is about copyright, not patents. Well, the comic should talk about the distinction of both because of this "intellectual property" fuzz).
That, and PostgreSQL took longer to have a native Lose32 port.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I learned PHP and mySQL under windows, with tutorials on magazines and downloaded. A lot of slashdotters absolutely hate Windows and Microsoft, but use it because we have no choice (we're not ready for Linux yet - or is it that Linux isn't ready for us yet?).
So, when we need to learn SQL, we need a database that can be easily installed on Windows (I'm talking about 5 years ago). So, why don't we use Postgre? Because we learned MySQL, and changing is a very difficult thing. Besides, MySQL is pretty decent, it's too complicated to change the subtle differences between MySQL and Postgre. And now that we learned it, we don't have time to relearn another one - specially when we're already programming mission critical applications.
Finally, most webservers have MySQL installed, and not Postgre.
Congratulations, you've just described a PvE server on World of Warcraft!
Thanks!:-P
Actually I was just curious if such a thing existed, I've never played multiplayer RPG's. Anyway I do agree with Meier in that we need more single player RPG's.
Make the games so that you can fight with some comrades online (like good ol' dungeoncrawlers), but there's no interaction with other players / guilds / etc. That'd really simplify things. Or make it in a way that the only interaction with "outsiders" is when you're not in a quest, and players cannot harm each other.
Focusing your view on the CHARACTER instead of the monsters does a lot of help! I've been doing that so often that it became natural for me when playing a 3D game.
What's your solution for school bullying? Having school laws against bullying - 8 (25.00%) Forgiving (by law) those who get even (just fists, no weapons) at bullies - 7 (21.88%) Having a special school court on fights and bullying - 5 (15.63%) things are OK the way they are - 12 (37.50%)
I think the problem with bullying is that it's not "critical enough" to get noticed by authorities (unlike breaking someone's leg for example), while it damages the victim's psyche. So, if you accuse someone of bullying, nothing can be done because bullying's not against the school's laws. But if you get even, you end up getting suspended.
First of all. Have your eyes checked, you might need glasses. I often get motion sickness when I play 3D games, but usually it takes at least an hour of continuous play for that. A couple of minutes is VERY RARE.
To see how bad your condition is, try going to the theater and watch a movie (yes, the theater). If you end up with nausea and headaches, you DO need to see an optometrist.
Second, try not to move the point of view very often. When you do that, you might get migraines. This happened a lot hwne I played Prince of Persia for the first time.
Also, you might try using the 2D controls instead of the default 3D ones (to see if the camera is easier on you), and please, DO NOT RUN OR TURN AROUND LIKE CRAZY! A couple of 360 degrees turns on a 3D game is enough to leave you on the ground.
Try to take it easy, click on the map often (triangle) to see where you're going. If you get tired, press pause and close your eyes.
Try also adjusting your monitor to deliver a smaller view area.
Blink often, and if you get the least bit dizzy, press pause and look elsewhere. Do not stare at the screen so much.
A strategy I use is to close your eyes or look elsewhere when the camera is doing a quick pan. Remember that there's a button to adjust the point of view to first person.
If all of this fails, give up on the game and stick with your old games. It's not worth it. Finally, if you got money and good lawyers, try suing Sony for not putting warning labels on these games:P
If I had unlimited access to a Playstation or 500 channels of television when I was a teen, I'd probably be working for an insurance company or a restaurant instead of being self employed and successful doing something I truly enjoy.
I think I got your idea, but you didn't quite hit the nail on the head. See, I had cable TV and i've been enjoying videogames since I was a kid. But I learned to program nifty stuff like you, and I cracked my first videogame when I was 12. By 18 I cracked my first shareware app (curse those register screens:P ). Currently i'm working with an MVC framework for PHP that I designed myself. I work in an e-business company.
I really don't think having videogames or cable TV will make a difference. What really matters is the education and the interest in Science that you're raised with.
See, my dad always bought me science books when I was a kid. Science for kids, that is, with nifty graphics and all that. I really have to say his effort was worth it.
About your talent, I really think you're a gifted individual, there are people who even with good circumstances around them, have trouble learning to program a "hello world". A potential problem with gifted people is that if they don't recognize their gifts, they might end up judging others too harshly, crushing their own self-esteem. Don't make that mistake.
1. Post it on Sourceforge. Open Source advocates often search sourceforge for projects that might fulfill their needs. Plus, sourceforge helps you build a community, and external people can analyze your sourcecode directly without having to download the tgz. It also gives you the advantage of having version control systems for the development.
2. Build a community, make a forum. A community is very important, and user forums are a MUST. If you don't have forums, you also make the impression that your program is a "single user" program (single user programs often lack quality due to not enough user base, beta testers, etc.) and that its support might finish unexpectedly. (Making developer forums is also encouraged)
3. Revamp your website. Finally, try to make a more impressive website, having a dull website can scare potential users away (typical thought: "if they program the same way they make websites...").
Compare a typical open source website before and after redesigning the webpage. Which one looks more appealing? By personal experience, I can tell you that if new users have to choose, they'll choose the software with better webpage, regardless of the software quality.
4. Advertise. Finally, try to advertise in more places, make your webpages google friendly, etc.
The goal of Linux as Desktop OS should be to fix Microsoft's design mistakes, not adding their own.
By rejecting everything in Windows as "evil", they're rejecting many good things like the UI and configuration consistency. Why should we have to rely on MANY DIFFERENT stuff for configuration, when Windows does it elegantly with its Control Panel? (I'm talking about the first tier, not the registry crap - Control Panel would do as well by using.ini files instead of the dreaded registry)
To configure stuff in Linux, you have an app to configure the screen, another to configure the network, etc. etc. And THIS is the problem with Linux fundies. "Why change it? It works". It was attitudes like this that gave birth to answers like the famous quake 3 under linux troll, which originally was a legitimate complaint.
In comparison, Ubuntu (as we saw recently) has an extensive list of things-to-be fixed to make it more user friendly (like hardware recognition, boot loaders, package management), and this was the reason to delay Dapper, so they can finish the ones currently being worked.
My theory is that Linux needs a critical-mass of user friendliness to replace Windows on the Joe Users' desktops, and Ubuntu seems to approach that critical mass quite fast. Maybe in 3 or 4 years, it will happen.
but there is a phenomenon observed in ADHD sufferers that shows while playing video games (and some other activities) they focus to the exclusion of all other stimuli, often for extended periods of time
Once i was doing something (i'm over 30, so it's not a childhood thing) and my dad said hello. In my mind i *knew* he said hello, but something didn't quite get into my brain. I just kinda processed the information but forgot that I had to say "hello" back to him, i just kept doing my stuff.
He said "hello" again, and this time i did respond. Then I realized something was wrong with me. And it's not the first time it happens, it's been like that all my life... on the shower i have to set up an alarm because i tend to lose the notion of time and i might end up getting late for work.
When I watch TV, if my parents ask something to me, I really don't know if they did because I was paying attention to the TV. But it's not like i was just distracted, it's that I really did NOT hear them - or at least don't remember that I heard them.
So I'd like to invite those believers in "ADHD excuses you have no diseases" idiots to STFU.
Sony seems to use Linux for the PS3 - and at the same time, Linus says he won't use GPL3 for Linux due to the DRM clauses.
Interesting coincidence, don't you think?
Does an e-commerce app count as mission critical? In some parts I have to use InnoDB tables because of the transactions.
Also, please explain how PostgreSQL has the advantage over mySQL for "mission critical" apps. What's wrong with MySQL?
(Mods: Please DONT mod this insightful, i'm asking a question and I want it to be answered)

So I guess it's an inertia situation.
We have ALWAYS been at war with the terrorists.

Yeah but when will they pack and leave the White House?
Not only is she featured on Slashdot. She's also a member.
And she goes to the gym, too!
C'mon guys, now we have a genius as our slashdotter role model, we should follow her example and build some muscle!
and if you ask, it might kill him.
AH, so the cat does NOT have top secret clearance!
Congratulations, you've just described a PvE server on World of Warcraft!

At this risk of completely blowing up his server,
Translation: "Let's fry him BWAHAHAHAHAHA! (Oh yeah I'm evil!)"

most gamers are younger, young people don't vote
Speak for yourself. I'm a gamer since 1981, and I'm 30 now.
The day I am allowed to crack into Microsoft's code base and change it all into Linux is the day Windows-deadheads have the right...
So people with legitimate complaints about your software are deadheads?
Your honor, I rest my case.

Thanks for your answer. Now I'm able to say that you can't run Asterisk on Windows without having to install VMWARE first.
:)
I guess I'll go for Ekiga, as soon as the server gets un/.'ed
Depends on what you consider an application. I'm pretty sure http://asterisk.org/ has a few months on you.
:-/
Yes, but does it run on Windows?
