    Aagh. This is awful.

The support staff here (university) basically forbids people from administering their own systems, due to all the Windows viruses, spyware, etc.

So all my colleagues have to call and wait for someone whenever they want to install new software. No thanks.

I managed to escape, happily administering my own machine, only because I arrived running Mac OS X Panther which at the time they didn't yet support.

That's just entirely wrong. Linksys, DLink, etc are 100% compatible with Apples, no problem. No need to buy AirPort whatsoever. Of course you can if you like. Other peripherals not made by Apple, that work very well, include scanners, printers, cameras (still & digital), external Firewire drives, etc etc... and, last but not least, three button mice!. ----------- If you want an "AirPort" you're not going to get one from Linksys or DLink or Belkin, you're getting it from Apple at the Apple Store. You're sacrificing variety and options for compatability.

Yeah, the new model; it works well & I like it a lot. Gets under all the furniture, under the bed etc; in fact it cleans a lot better than I did. Granted I'm lazy, and hate hate hate vacuuming. But that's kind of the point, isn't it?

It has its issues (have to empty bin every time, must get cords/random junk off the floor, etc. For me, worth it.) For lots of info and reviews see http://www.roombareview.com/

Sure, it would be a two second search - but only if one knows that DICOM was the name of an image format. Nor does the company's statement "We are a DICOM alternative to film" help unless you already know what DICOM means. Kind of a catch-22, no?

Look, this is a myth, folks, that needs to be beaten with a stick until it's good and dead.

    1. When you think "wireless utility", how about you think "water utility" - yeah, that stuff that pretty much just works, so much so you take it for granted. Designed and run by gov't employees.

    2. The reference to the California DMV is exactly right. It's impressively low hassle, and has been for some years - but before that, it was hell-on-wheels, fulfilling every bit of that myth. It's pretty clear that what happened is, somebody took control of the California DMV and, well, fixed it. Made it run sensibly and effectively (not so easily done). It's amazing the difference. There is an unsung hero in that story.

    3. The well-known comic, Dilbert, is about government bureaucrats, ineptitude and inefficiency... oh, wait.

    4. Others have pointed out such companies, so...

The point? The performance of an entity, whether a piece of government or a private company, depends primarily on its internal culture (which is itself influenced by individuals like the unknown hero of the DMV). It has very little to do with whether the service it provides is for-profit or not.

Of course, companies can go out of business, but it's pretty damn obvious - if you look at evidence, instead of relying without thinking on that that myth/theory - that plenty of companies with abysmal customer satisfaction profiles merrily continue to profit.

  14. Re:Don't be a metrosexual on Home Defense, Geek Style? · · Score: 3, Informative

Pit bulls are *potentially* much more dangerous, because of their breed, than are other types of dogs, and here's the reason. Canids have an instinct, that when their opponent surrenders, they stop attacking. But Pit bulls have had this instinct bred out of them. Pits will not surrender, and will not stop attacking. But pits are usually really friendly to people - excessively so, so much that they make poor guard dogs. They were bred to fight other dogs. But f'ed-up types can train them to regard people as their target, too. These dogs are eager to please their owners, so if that's what he wants... Then you have something really, really, really dangerous. Because when they attack they don't stop until something is dead. So a pit bull makes a terrible choice for a guard dog. It's not what they were bred for. German Shepards, on the other hand, have excellent guard instincts. You can stop a well-trained German from attacking with a command. Pits don't listen to that command: they are constitutionally incapable of it, bred for centuries for their much-admired refusal to give up fighting. A half-dead Pit will attempt to keep fighting. Still a pit doesn't normally attack people, only other dogs, unless it has been mistrained. Of course you can mistrain a German Shepard too. But to suggest there is no inherent difference in the breed characteristics is irresponsible.
