"Bloated" Office for Mac? Have you ever used MS Office on OS X? It's absolutely gorgeous! It's better than Office for Windows!
AppleWorks/i{Product} not good enough? Damn man, have you even used iWorks yet? It's the direction of the future!
Shit just works on the Mac. Shit just doesn't work on Windows.
There is no way in hell that Apple would invest in OO - it's a bloated piece of shit.
"Simple to install"? That's not even a requirement on OS X, that's a given for *every* application. You drag and drop to remove, you download to install. End of story.
You were hired as a CTO, in 1999. You didn't own a computer. The computer you were hired by had £800k in the bank account and couldn't get you a computer or afford an office.
For fucks sake, what does running Linux have to do with performing paradigm shifting and revolutionizing windowing systems in an Apple article?
Linux got left behind a long time ago bud, wake up and smell the coffee. It's called OS X.
Now if the interface is an absolute paradigm shift that is an order of magnitude more efficient than the mah jhong tiles that define the top of applications in GUI's today AND it runs on Linux?
I signed up for AOL one day just to see what their interface was like. I mean, after all, they are known for being the "dumbed down" internet.
Had no problems canceling a few days later. They offered a free month, then three free months. Nope, no thank you. "I'm moving out of the country where there is no AOL dialup number."
If all you need is several thousand dollars and your business isn't generating at least that in monthly revenue, why would anyone want to invest in your company?
Several thousand dollars is chump change. If you truly believed in your idea, you would come up with the money. Either from personal savings, refinancing your home, selling your car -- whatever it takes. It's called bootstrapping.
Typically most ILEC's and cell phone carriers are still using TDM encoding on the backend, simply because it is more efficient than any existing VoIP protocol. Since they own their own network ( the copper / fiber in the ground ), it does *not* make sense whatsoever to convert all existing equipment to utilize VoIP. The upgrades would be / will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
I'm not sure what motivated such changes, but usually you don't remove enhancesments to software unless they are causing major problems or if they somehow affect your financial bottom line. Somehow I think its related to the latter of the two because I don't see how the former would case problems.
Great! Since you obviously know that it's not causing a major problem, but it's affecting the bottom line, would you please care to explain just how it is affecting the bottom line?
Oh wait, sorry, guess you can't!
Origination / Termination & Carrier Access Bil

SBC's VoIP End Run

This is nothing new. LEC's have been paying each other for access to their networks ( terminating LD calls ) for years. Carrier access billing is a decent profit center in and of itself!
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandates that all telecommunications carriers whose facilities are used to provide long distance service are entitled to a share of the compensation paid for that service. This revenue helps the local company to provide facilities over which the long distance company can provide calls to its customers.
If VoIP companies are going to offer telco services, they should *embrace* this form of compensation, and turn around and bill SBC for their customers that call the VoIP subscriber of said company.
What? Back up the train a minute here buddy!

Let's see.

Right.....

They never billed my card a single time.
Oh quit your fucking bitching and moaning.
Of course what happens when you have a various dependencies and they are not packaged with the application?
What 'standard' directory do you propose that those are placed in?
Is that 'standard' the same for all Linux flavors?
He's hinting at it, but never comes right out and says it.
Is it cancer or not bud?
This has been going on for quite awhile now, and still no official fixes from SixApart?
Shame on them.

Uhm, incorrect.

It's a marketing gimmick, they are creating a sense of urgency.
It's all about perception, my friend.
So the fact that I charge half of my customer base, the "unbanked", 75% more for their phone access in advance is not an 'unfair' tax?
All the while, still claiming subsidies from the government for rural telephone access.
You can count on it.
Michael Powell will be gone by January, and will most likely end up working for Verizon or one of the other RBOC's.
This is just a temporary ruling. Let VoIP become nice and entrenched, then prepare to open your pockets.
