I've been playing videogames for years now, I've played CS, Doom, Unreal Tournament, etc. I never was really bothered by the violence or graphics because it was entertainment. I even thought GTA:San Andreas was an excellent game, despite it's dubious morals.

I have no problem with people publishing ManHunt2, or playing it. But is anyone else very disturbed by the idea of using a Wiimote to stab/strangle/maim people? This just seems over-the-top to me. I don't think I could play this even if it appealed to me.

  3. Re:inflation on Annual IT Salary Survey Finds Dissatisfaction · · Score: 4, Interesting
Slashing interest rates to record lows (sub-1%) is going to create a subprime mortgage crisis. Anyone can see that coming, people will get easy mortgages fast and not be prepared for the adjustable rate rising. Many economists predicted a crisis, some didn't think it would be very bad. Frankly, this downtown is a necessary correction.

Inflation is probably not outpacing your salary, all those reasons inflation is overstated are rock solid. Compare your spending and consumption with last year. If your taxes increased (property taxes often do) factor that in. Unless your salary remained constant or you took a pay cut, it is impossible for inflation alone to account for a decline in real income, probably taxes and new purchases.

  4. Re:inflation on Annual IT Salary Survey Finds Dissatisfaction · · Score: 4, Interesting
Actually virtual all economists agree that the inflationary rate is overstated by around 1%. It ignores increases in quality, tech innovation, and the substitution effect. (if prices at grocery stores rise, more people will go to Walmart for their groceries yet this is not counted) It's also acknowledged by most groups in the Federal Reserve.

Chances are if your wages are really increasing by that percentage, your spending or consumption is up (did you buy that iPhone..?). Inflation has recently been around 2.5-3%, realistically around 2%...so if you're exceeding that in salary increases, it's probably not due to inflation.

  8. Anti-evolution?! Hardly the most important on Putting Anti-Evolution Candidates On the Spot · · Score: 4, Insightful
The anti-evolutionist sentiment held by most of the Republican candidates is HARDLY the place to start the questioning. I'll give a sample of topics for candidates, so they can respond to questions that actually matter.

Romney- You once said you want to "double Guantanamo." Why do you condone, rather, endorse one of the darkest spots on America's record? Should we continue to deny them rights in the Geneva Convetnion?

Giuliani- Are you running as anything but the 9/11 candidate?

McCain- You've supported continuing the Iraq war voceriferously, when do we call it quits? After 1,000 troops are dead? 10,000? You joked about invading Iran, would you consider it?

Paul- You oppose abortion. Would you enact legislation to counteract (or severely restrict) Roe v. Wade?

There's a bunch more candidates, but why pick evolution? It is a fairly unimportant topic (considering the others at hand) and it is unlikely that a President will seriously impact what is taught in the tens of thousands of school districts across the nation (who pick their own cirriculum generally).

Foreign airlines are not allowed to fly domestically within the United States. I have no idea why, but they aren't. That's why you cannot hop on a British Airways flight from DC to LA.

Deregulation helped the United States immensely. "The U.S. airline market was deregulated in 1978. The virtues of the move, though long debated, had become more than self-evident by the mid-1990s: With the government no longer dictating ticket prices and in-flight menus, airfares dropped 40 percent in real terms between 1978 and 1997, saving travelers an estimated $20 billion a year and more than doubling the total number of passengers. (Accident rates, meanwhile, were cut in half.)"

However, security concerns (both physical and employment) have prevented us from allowing foreign airlines to fly within the United States. The efficiency and lower price of increased competition robs us all, everytime you take a flight you are paying a premium to keep Europeans out.

Note they aren't mandating 2nd-generation broadband that is a DEFINITION. And it's good they did that, because oftentimes I see advertisements for "broadband" internet that is just a few touches better than a 56k. That's why House Democrats called for a higher definition, right now, that definition includes any connection over 200Kbps, which Markey wants to boost more than 10 times. I doubt anyone on /. would consider 200kbps as "broadband."
