A view of our solar system from the most distant planetoid, Sedna. You can get this picture in very high resolution here - it makes an excellent wallpaper for your Windows desktop.

I've been using Linux as my primary or secondary OS at home for 3 years, and I easily know all the questions on that site. I'm wondering how to make that translate into an actual job, given that my degree is (going to be) in the field of Philosophy and I have no real experience administering computers in a professional setting. Are there certifications? Where do you start to get experience? Help, I'm going to need a job when I get out of college!

I don't know a single person on my campus who does not own a computer, and there's a tv in every room (sometimes it's a crappy 13-inch tv, but there's always one there.) I think I'm the only person in the school who doesn't own a cellphone (I rarely make calls so I just use my girlfriend's,) and, happily, I know at least 5 people running Linux (and the number is increasing every month.)

I can't imagine what it would be like to not have a computer- I use it for everything. It plays movies, lets me talk with friends, type up papers, and check up on class schedules.

I know this isn't going to be the most popular opinion, but I sort of feel sorry for the school district here. I mean, imagine if they did allow this and a parent complained, and you know one would. In a society that values censorship over responsibility, these people just did what they needed to to keep their jobs. As asinine as it seems, the district people were taking the safest route for all involved, politically. One more thing- imagine that a week later some nutball came to school and started shooting. You just know Halo 2 would have been blamed, whether the stupid kid went to the touroment or not. I guess if something were to happen, it's better that it not easily be tied to a form of media that a lot of people are trying very hard to censor.

This idea is going to sound totally ridiculous, but maybe the EFF should push a bill that actually does what you suggest- declare HTTP, IP, etc. illegal. It would completely delegitimize a corrupt legislature that is already a joke to most Americans (just look at popular opinion about the War on Drugs.) Once they've passed it, you can just sit back, laugh, and watch everything go to Hell. I really think it'd be a perfect way to show everyone in the country that the emperor is, in fact, naked.

  11. Re:Xbox 2 Hard drive on Xbox 2 for $400? · · Score: 1

Maybe, but IMO that kills the whole point of console gaming. I don't game on my PC very much for a couple reasons- the first is I use Linux and the second is because I can't afford to be upgrading hardware all the time. What's nice about console gaming is that you don't have to look at box requirements or anything- you can realistically buy a PS2 game, plug it into your PS2, and expect it to work, EVERY TIME. If consoles go the route of PCs, I'm going to be very unhappy.

Of course, I've worried about that since the expansion bay of the SNES, but nothing ever came of that...

  12. Different experience on Mandrake 10.1 Official Publicly Available · · Score: 2, Interesting

A lot of people are posting negative comments about how their MDK 10.1 install turned out, and I'd just like to temper that with my experience.

I've had nothing but good fortune with my install of 10.1. It detected everything (including my Synaptics touchpad, trackball USB mouse, and wireless card) perfectly and got it up and running with no hassles.

I really like the administrator tools in Mandrake, which is one of the reasons I use it instead of any other distribution. In 10.1 the GUI tools are very clean and look great.

I do have some complaints, like I don't like how the Mandrake security tools change permissions on files once an hour, requiring me to add a new rule to reset it back to the permissions I wanted. This was a neverending source of frustration to me until I finally figured out what was doing it.

But all in all I've had a very good experience with Mandrake 10.1. This is on a Presario 2190US laptop, and as you can see, your mileage may vary.

  14. Switch? on FreeBSD 5.3 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been a linux user for over a year, and I currently have Mandrake 10.1 installed on a Compaq Presario 2100. It's for personal use, so there's no need for the machine to be particularly secure. Everything works. Is there any reason for me to use BSD rather than Mandrake?

I'm also helping my girlfriend with Suse 9.1 on her Hewlett-Packard laptop. She has problems with ACPI, stability, and the linksys wireless card we bought for it. Is there any way she could benefit from a switch to this new BSD release?

    Thanks for your input!
