Anti-intellectualism has nothing to do with it. I have MORE INTERESTING things to spend time doing instead of re-inventing the wheel (or in this case, the OS). If you get your jollys from spending time fighting to get Linux to do what Windows does out of the box, good for you. In fact, if you want to call names, I'd call THAT anti-intellectualism. Instead of using your computer do do things with, you spend half your time just getting the damn thing to work because you're too cheap to spend $200 on a Windows license. While you're at it, why don't you find a better substance for your car's tires than rubber? Maybe you can find something cheaper and better, huh?
What a completely and utterly pointless waste of time.
Back in the '80s and early '90s, people coped perfectly well with competing computers and operating systems.
Yeah, you're right. That's because the vast majority of people using PC's in the 80's and 90's were computer dorks. Today, plenty of "regular" people are using PC's and most regular people have no time or interest in dicking around with OS stuff.
it is the difference between memorizing a method and understanding the concept.
Or, it's the case of people having other, more interesting things to spend their time learning. I used to be a computer geek, but now stuff like OS' bore the living shit out of me. I have -zero- interest in dicking around with a computer any more than I have to. I have a lot more interesting things to do,like running my business, fixing up my house, studying art, whatever. I wouldn't bother with Linux because to me, it's a complete and total waste of my time.
TV is not necessarily a necessity, but entertainment is a nicety of living that provides a little cushion and a little escapism in bad times.
Considering we live in one of the most uneducated modern countries in the world, I would LOVE to see TV go away. Maybe then people would pick up a book or spend some time speaking to each other. TV's just like religion: it's a panacea that keeps people dumb.
I'm not talking about technical skills. I'm talking about business acumen. I have no reason to trust anybody using a web-based email address. It's very fly-by-night. Are you going to have your house built by a guy who lives in his truck?
I think you're digging a bit if you think that printing gmail.com or yahoo.com on your business card is "unprofessional".
I disagree. I think they're very unprofessional. I'm not going to consider spending a good chunk of change with anybody who can't or won't spend $10/month for their own domain.
I just got Exchange hosting for my business, and it was one of the best decisions I've made. Plain ol' email really just doesn't cut it for me. POP/IMAP, are really just different flavors of plain ol' email. Exchange Server offers so much more, that I really can't see ever going back to POP/IMAP/web-based email. You pay a lot more for it, but with most things, you get what you pay for.
I just want that system to print a paper receipt that can be used in the case of a dispute and a recount.
Computer based voting is simply unnecessarily complicated. Who says that the system will print out the correct information? What happens to the receipts?
Nah, pen and paper have worked for thousands of years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Oh, I used to love being a Libertarian when it was legal to do so in my state! Those guys are great.
But seriously, since when have politicians, especially Republicans bothered to follow laws? I mean, really. Simple election laws are nothing compared to what's happened during this past administration.
For some reason Architects like to cool office space with AC even if there is "free" cool air out doors.
Because that's what people like (for some weird reason). Next time the weather is nice, notice how many people drive their cars with the windows rolled up. I think those people are crazy, but they're in the majority, at least in the US.
Are the over 30 year olds really that stupid? This is stuff I'd expect from my grandmother, not a governor/VP candidate.
Hello. Welcome to Earth. You're obviously new here. For the past month or so, you can go to virtually any legitimate news outlet are read one thing or another proving that yes, Palin is really that stupid. Teaching abstinence, potentially banning books, teaching Creationism, getting her husband involved in firing people, approving the hunting of wolves from airplanes, asking rape victims to pay for their own rape kits.... And that's just off the top of my head. You should read a bit. The rest of the world already knows she's a moron.
It's got nothing to do with "over 30". Maybe I should suggest that people under 30 don't ever read the news, because you clearly haven't.
We cry and bitch and moan about warrantless government wiretapping, yet when some group of a-holes breaks into an elected official's personal email account and posts screenshots on the web, we see it as just some more dirt on a candidate. The best word that describes that is "despicable."
No, the fact that this is the only way to get information about these people that decide that they are above the law (Bush, Cheney, and now, Palin), is despicable. We, the people, shouldn't have to wait for somebody to do this in order for us to get information about what our publically elected officials are doing. If anything, I'll bet that this hack was a response to Pain's office ignoring court orders.
This is a battle that Microsoft must win. But can they do it?
I really doubt this. You're talking about the poorest of poor customers. People who probably would never buy a (legal) Ms license in their lives, anyway. This isn't going to effect them at all, even in the long run. The kids who are getting these machines, by and large, are not going to end up being MS power users in the first world.
Whatever they build upon i hold my thumbs its something new because if one thing is needed today its more OS out there.
Let me guess... you're in your 20's right? Nobody who was around for the Commodore/Apple IIe/Tandy/IBM PC/etc. days would want to deal with the mess of 17 different platforms again. That was a real headache back in the early PC days. The market will naturally go to just a few options (which it did). It works better for suppliers and consumers.
If desktop linux is ever to be successful, there needs to be a standard and tightly integrated stack.
You mean like Microsoft....? I'm not saying it's good or bad, but that's part of why MS is so successful. It's easy for developers and users to integrate everything.
I don't know. I've never been in a Petco. It happens in my store, though, sure. Just this morning there was a "HVAC guru" in Lowe's hardware selling his company's heat pumps. Again, this really isn't news, unless you've never been in a retail store other than Wal-Mart, before.

Oh, lighten up. It's harmless and fun.

You're proud of not being able to administer Exchange correctly? That's the American way!

Ok, so it's a piece of art of dubious merit. Neat. Why's it on Slashdot?
corporate types who are used to paying for products. ("It can't possibly be good if it's free, can it?"
I think it goes waaaay beyond "corporate types". Every hear "You get what you pay for"? I got that from my grandfather who was a factory worker.
I just want that system to print a paper receipt that can be used in the case of a dispute and a recount.

Who says that our government is even remotely interested in the voters having faith in them? They routinely and overtly lie to the voters, already.

But if I had to liquidate my holdings and move to another brokerage, I'd do it. I'd prefer an interface in python, php or even (gasp) perl.
Why would you have to liquidate your holdings just to move to a different brokerage?
Holy god. That's huge. Good luck with your health.
A BMI of 28 is not "slightly obese". That's fat.

I'm sorry. I just checked Apple's site. "Quintupled" is more accurate. Jesus people, just buy a Dell and paint it white, already,
