  1. Interesting Chronology... on 1KM 802.11b @ 2MB · · Score: 3, Informative

So phreak03 claims the site has been up for "several years".

The author of the site, claims on it, that it was posted in Dec'01. Not really what I'd consider "several years".

The Cringely article referenced in the piece was posted Feb 7,2002.

    Odd, what?

  3. Ironic on Palm Kills Off Graffiti · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've owned several Palms, over the last 5 years. I love graffitti, it's quick and easy for me now.

For Xmas, my bud got me a Dell Axim for a present. One of the first things I figured out, was how to put it in "Block Recognizer" mode, so that it understands Grafitti.

Now Palm's moving away from Grafitti, basically leaving all of their existing customer base wtih their best upgrade option for the future, being to move to the competitions products, since it better suits their ingrained habits.

Seems like a disastrous decision to me.

  4. Block Recognizer on Palm Kills Off Graffiti · · Score: 2

At least on my Dell Axim, it's called "block recognizer" as opposed to "letter recognizer"

Block Recognizer - "With BR, you can input character strokes you may have learned using Grafitti from Palm"

Letter Recognizer - "With LR you can input natural character strokes as well as strokes you may have learned using Jot from CIC."

I was in Best Buy, or The Good Guys the other day, and happened to see a display of stereo equipment. The manufacturer was pitching the product line as using Firewire to interconnect all the devices. Personally I think this is a great design. Suddenly each device has a power cord, and a single data cable. And then the reciever has a "hub" built in. FAR less spaghetti behind the system, FAR less opportunities for noise to leak into the wiring, etc.

He committed a very blatant crime. He's getting everything he deserves, I'd say. If anything the only reason that I would say this sucks, is if the taxpayers have to support him while he's incarcerated. Hopefully they'll just put him on a slow boat back home.

  9. Obvious economic benefit on Russian Student Arrested For Revealing DirecTV Secrets · · Score: 2

There's a totally obvious economic benefit here. He gave the documentation away, in the hope that others would be able to get satellite TV for free. Getting something for free, that would normally be paid for, possibly expensively, is a definite economic benefit. Doesn't get any more cut and dried than that.

aka the web page, clearly state U80.

I don't have the device, so I didn't have a manual handy to whip out. I suppose I could have dug a little deeper, but I assumed the company would put their *best* foot forward with their marketing. Rare to see someone understate their products capabilities.

If I'd been reviewing a product that over-delivered, I'd probably mention in the review, that the product did more than it promised.

After reading the review, I flipped over to the website, and the U80 spec jumped out at me.

  11. Poor review... on IDE/ATAPI to SCSI Converters Reviewed · · Score: 2

At several points in the review they credit the devices with being U160.

Unfortuantely, according to Addonics own marketing materials, the adapters top out at U80.

SO we've got a very limited review, of an expensive item, that allows you to use cheaply made drives on server class systems, putting your data at greater risk. And the "review" has technical errors in it.

    I think I'll pass.

  16. Gigabit... on Build Your Own Mac · · Score: 2

    Be honest here folks.

We're talking about homebrew PC's. There are very few businesses that want homebrew x86 boxes, made with new parts. So if you try and sell them on homebrew mac's made with grey market second hand parts, etc, you can bet the CFO won't let that fly.

So we're bsically talking about homebrew machines for the home.

Who in gods name, needs gigabit at home? You can basically take it to the bank, that the bottleneck any home user will have, will be their pipe to the net. Arcnet will be faster than 99% of the home net connections out there. And if you do have the $$ to get a T3+ at home, you probably won't bother building a Mac from scratch.

Gigabit's only really a selling point, if you've got something to connect to it, that will actually USE the bandwidth. Otherwise it's just a spoiler or a Civic.
