This is about Linux and common linux tools:
I'm talking features, not price nore stability nor security, although they do heavily weight in linux's favor. Just a few things I couldn't live without
- MIME recognition of files and not DOS-old extensions?
- Seamless integration of sofwtare using client/server abstraction, allowing multiple GUI to use a single enfine
- Powerfull shell
- Command line optional argument for most application, even the graphical one. Very useful when you wan to map a key to a specific action
- Packet based installation of software!!
- Automatic update of All installed software
- SSH !
and so on
I have been running Linux for only three years now but couldn't live without it.
With linux you can do much more things than with windows, but sometime those extra-thing won't work perfectly.
It's like comparing a bicycle and a car !
MS is riding the bycicle and going: ahah, but what do you do when you're short on gas ?

It's not on "the mars", it's on Mars and you must be reffering to the famous "Great face of Mars" (as opposed to the great ass of Mars).
Does this prevent people to find "a face" on the moon ?
Find something that looks like a face on the moon and post it in this thread. The challenge includes finding a way to indicate the point in the link...
But what is wrong with SSL ? If people are fooled into ignoring ssl warnings and certificates, there's absolutelty no point in adding extra gizmos. They will still be tricked. They'd rather educate people on SSL, signed certificates etc...
Imagine the conversation at the bank:
- Hi, I am willing to connect to my online account
- Sure sir, here's a leaflet designed for retarded lusers that will guide you to do that.
- Ur no actually, I don't trust the authority that signed the SSL certificate and would like you to confirm direclty the public key of the bank
- ?? I beg your pardon ??
It's a shame !
Well it's true that SSL is too cryptic (laugh) for
average users. But if they'de replace key hexadecimal representation by an associated sequence of word that could do it.
Hey look, this site has certificate weasel-weasel-badger-kangaroo-cow-marten-...
but at the bank they said it was
cow-sheep-weasel...
Firefox burns greasemonkey cuz it's made of fat
But Seamonkey beats firefox because it extinguishes the fire.
Then Greasemonkey beats seamonkey because it can float in water AND walk on land.
my 2.56 cents
Convenience is. You can use clean energy to produce the ethanol, such has hydro-electrics or nuclear power but it's much harder to use it directly in a car. You can use ethanol in your car though. So throwing money in developping ethanol is not pointless because
a) research will make the efficiency ratio increase
b) ethanol is a convinient way to store energy for vehicles
"we're really having to work more closely with partners in the hardware industry and content industry, to really think through the whole end-to-end experience and make it better"
work more closely -> control
think thorugh the whole experience -> control
make it better -> abuse our vertical dominant position
Dear Ms Slashdot
I, for myslef, am the widow of Dr. Muembe from Burundi. My husband was killed by a coalition of rebels, corrupt militaries, 419 scammers and AOL suscribers. He left me with assets over 1,000,000,000,000,000 US$ in a bank in Cape Town.
I heard you were a very reliable person an seek your help...
Still crawling to use a computer. Computers will soon look like fucking game consoles or TVs... people juste aren't into customization and advanced features. Sad but true. Technology has advanced to a point where average human intelligence begins to fail to keep up.

What do I do ? I give apple to the computers and frosties to the cereals because that's the one I know. Now you are free not to use my dns associations. You can use one from organization XYZ that has a specific policy for resolving this kind of issues, including - for example - redirecting you to disambiguation pages ala wikipedia on their servers OR, selecting the statistically most seeked site, OR preferring the apple candies because their policy is not to show anything related to cereals.
(replace cereals by porn and you get the idea...
you can choose to accept dns signed by the
safe-for-kids-dns-association, you can also be a huge perv and use SeXdns to be redirected to porn whenever it is possible)
The possibilities are endless.
Best thing, it is backward compatible with classic DNS... one could lanch a local DNS server on their machine as a tunnel to access this signed DNS protocol.
It's not a matter of who gets what hostname. A hostname is juste a convenient way to reach a server, it is definitly NOT the killer feature that will boost marketting for a website. Anyway I see hostnames disappearing in the future. It is already happening, a good rank in Google search results is already way more important than the proper domain name. Another solution implies the distribution of signed IP/hostname pairs by renowned organizations. Such pairs could be copied and distributed by any ISP. If gnu.org, google.com and heywhynot microsoft.com all tell me this hostname relates to that IP I may choose to trust them. I can also be a paranoïd freak and only trust pairs signed by my grandmother, which might limit my browsing experience - the point is I can choose. This is, in my opinion, the right approach to take. Trademark conflicts ? Typos spoofing ? All of this can be resolved by the suggested system. I may choose an authority which privileges hostname on a first-to-claim basis or I may choose an authority privileging a "saner" approach (granting trademarked hostnames to their owners and not to the smartass who registered it first and put pr0n instead).
Kids are intelligent being, with very high learning abilities. Unfortunately the school system sucks (especially in the US). I'm not surprised that a kid can catch quickly on programming languages. They share many characteristics with natural languages, such as recursivity (talking about the syntax, not recursion as a programming technic), this is a great age to learn these things. She had the chance to have a great education. Education is extremly beneficial to economy but on a long term and thus is generally not a big concern for poilitics.
Meant DLP not DSP...
Laser projection is, in its principle much simpler than dlp or lcd. dlp needs millions of tiny mirrors, whereas laser only need a few.
You have to achieve two things
1) dim the intensity according to the color
(can be achieved by going through a polarized material through a variable angle, using a controlled mirror)
2) scanning the screen, rotation of small reflective device... imagine a mirror spiral on a cylinder
I don't really get why one would want DIY here... Having a video-projector, say for home-cinema sake or gaming is mostly about quality of the picture. Apart from the sake of learning I'd rather buy one. Oh, and not a LCD one, at least a DSP.
Although laser projection tech has been around for some time now, I'm really surprised that it's not used. Although sounds like a feasible DIY project.
Someone is going to post : matter of days before it get cracked but it's not really relevant. If you crack it let's say you're able to send it over the internet for free... guess what it's already there anyway.
So what's the point of DRMing it anyway ? Obtain agreements to sale online probably... their protection being cracked is the best thing that can happen to them.

I can't even see Dr. Evil giant "laser" !
Because it is Turing complete...
But, why would you run a trojan on your computer? (yeah yeah I know)

Let's watch the number of bids augment as the auction is being slashdotted. Free advertising anyone ?

- Won't catch unless it is driven by the pr0n industry
- Just imagine a beowfulf cluster of these !

Don't thank me

Yep but it scans the screen, it doesn't cover it all at once.

Hi I live in China and many words seem to be missing from the story and the article, it's really hard to read. Are these typos ?

So what is C++0x going to obfuscate now ?
