A highschool friend and I were both on dialup, and wanted to share our amazing collections of mp3s with each other. We lived directly next door to each other is the thing. Called up Blue Stake to see if we could dig, got permission from the 'rents, and laid a PVC pipe along under the grass with 4 100 foot Cat5 cables. We did 4 incase one got ruined by weather or something and we didn't want to have the hassle of rewiring the whole thing. From there it's pretty basic networking. I'd have to say getting Samba to work was the hardest part =) It was so easy because we didn't need repeaters or anything wireless since we lived so close. Fun stuff.
SuSE is a great distro for both seasoned and new Linux users. It has a friendly graphical install program and a very comprehensive administration tool.
I highly suggest to anyone who hasn't tried it, and isn't already set in their distribution ways, to grab a copy and give it a go.
NSI has been on a downward spiral since they got so huge. Sometimes they'll be really quick and sometimes they'll act like they never got your request.
I think that eventually NSI will phase out to 4-5 major different domain registrators.
if you think about it for a second about this whole thing you realize the 19th century sort of made it hard to create all even dates.
if you think a bit harder you'll realize we'll be having a lot of these even days for the first year of 2000. the next one being 02-04-00. yep. friday.
my point? savior the one time we realize this is an even day.
Well, I've always been a bit annoyed with Linux's streaming media capabilites. Hell I remember how impressed I was when I first watched a high quality mpeg in X. It's certainly come a long way.
The wars over browsers, streaming media, user friendliness, etc, will always go on. If you haven't noticed this world's business seem to have a "I'm better than anyone else" look.
Sure Windows can display neat ASF movies, or whatever they do lately. I don't exactly keep up with them. Do you need to reboot after swapping NIC's in Windows? Yes. Do you usually have a 2-3 day uptime in Windows9x? I do. Is windows a more stable, secure, reliable, and robust operating system than Linux? Of course not. Anyone who has spent a month with Linux can tell you that.
My point is this is trivial. Linux doesn't need to be used everywhere. Maybe it shouldn't be used everywhere. We use it, we are happy. If other admins and users want to use windows let them.
pages load 2-3 seconds faster than netscape 4.7 i deleted explorer.
linux box amd-k2 450 64ram viper 770 (enlightenment, suse-6.3) pages loading about the same or maybe a tad slower.
synapsis: its a resource hog. arent all browsers? from the looks of the default font when i first started it up these guys have big monitors (i couldnt read it on my 17" in 1124x864) big monitors means nice computers. what can ya do?
at the very least another decent browser has some along. im using it to type up this comment.
heh, for some reason i think you meant USB astrotek... AGP is a slot usually used for video cards on your motherboard, USB is those flat 1/2 inch ports in the back of your computer, that your webcam/scanner/mouse/whatever is plugging into.
USB support for the linux kernel has been dreamed of for a while now. If i remember right if was in 2.2.13 but was Experimental. So I'd give it til 2.2.15 or.16.
look, wouldn't everyone rather be making love at the stroke of the doom clock instead of sitting in their roof with a loaded shotgun and a 1/3 full bottle of jagermiester? lets get our priorities straight here.
I dont quite understand what makes a 486 more resistant to radiation. I'm not a science expert, but I'm sure the hubble doesn't need a horrible amount of CPU. Why don't they just use an AMD-k63 450mhz? Last I heard those were around 50$ and I'm sure even NASA can afford that;)
Well we have all heard about sea creatures living in sub-zero ocean enviorments. Although if the entire ocean is surrounded by ice I'm not seeing where organisms would get the nutrients to live.
heh. ok. well i agree with you to a certain extent. the little graphic on the top-left corner of my netscape says this place is 'news for nerds, stuff that matters.' sure people passing away may not be in the news for nerds catagory, but it certainly belongs in stuff that matters.
also, i mean, i hope i'm not the only one, but slashdot is where is get 90% of my news. i would have never heard about the passing of many great actors and actresses if it wasnt on slashdot.
thats just my 2 cents, as they say.
tyler ps. this isnt a lecture, i found your post kinda funny:)
from what i can make out it essentially describes what distributed.net clients and seti@home client do. i have a feeling one of two things will happen. either intel knows about this, and simply does not care because they are nice people. or, imho this is the less likely option, intel decides to activate their patent rights and a long bloody battle in the courts will persue.
i think the only for sure thing is theres no way this is going to heavily effect any type of "helping humanity by donating computer time" projects.
to me this is stating the obvious. all minors that i know don't even read the first line of the license agreement. im pretty sure no minor is actually going to think twice about downloading this product.

i coulda sworn i was on slashdot, not hyperreal.org
why did this post get moderated up?
I can see it now, "When good rockets go bad"
"My favorite part is when the rocket blew up"

Looks like we have to wait a couple more weeks.

I would have to agree completely. There isn't a chance in hell I'd run that bin on _any_ of my servers.
Maybe the FBI thinks we trust them or something.
If they'd just say, "Yes, we at Blizzard are heavily considering a Linux port for new games and/or old games" everyone would shutup.
I hope they are considering it! VMWare just takes up too much resources.
I can just see it now, on one side of town you can view theonion.com at a library, and on the other side you can't.
lol, put a bit too much crack in your cereal this morning?

The bugtraq list talked about this about a month back. the original comment is here and most of the discussion on it is here
Am I the only one that isn't worried? I have faith in the /. crew.
Sure mergers can be a bit scary but I think the dedication that the maintainers of Slashdot give will prevent anything horrible from happening.

To each their own.
quick benchmark:
(on a cablemodem)
windows98 box
pII-350 239meg ram millenium g400 (while securecrt was opened):
pages load 2-3 seconds faster than netscape 4.7 i deleted explorer.
linux box
amd-k2 450 64ram viper 770 (enlightenment, suse-6.3)
pages loading about the same or maybe a tad slower.

ps. this text field is acting a bit choppy heh
Don't forget AT&T@Home (formerly TCI@Home).

As much as this article says "to promote the use of ingidenous software" I can't help but think there are other concerns the Chinese Government has.
Security concerns? Sure, we all know GPL software is a hell of a lot more secure than closed-source software.
User concerns? Maybe, while Windows may be easier to use at a glance, Linux can be just as easy with 2-4 weeks of practice.
Anyone agree with me here?
Tyler

Merry christmas to everyone that makes this page the best!
The readers, the writers, the posters, the people who supplied the servers, and andover.net.
I wish all of you good luck in the new year, and i hope you have a great time today!

well now all we need is syd barrett to release a new one and us floyd fans will be set.
:D
like that will ever happen tho
