Honestly, I think this was a better choice than a 10% FTE workforce reduction, and 50% contractor pool reduction like we had where I work. The layoffs we went through recently were really heartbreaking and since we're in CA, there's little chance of these folks getting a job soon. I would have gladly given up 10% of my pay to have kept some of these people on, ESPECIALLY since keeping them on would mean we were more competitive with the other company that shares our market space.
What's news about this is that Volt is letting it's employees vote on a MANDATORY pay decrease:
FTA:
We have evaluated all pay rates for our Microsoft agency temporary workers and have concluded that we will be asking each of you to share in these measures by accepting a 10% reduction in your pay rate. These reductions are very difficult for Volt to implement since we value each and every one of you; however this is mandatory in order to continue your assignment at Microsoft and to respond to this economic environment.
republicans give a larger percentage of their income to charity than democrats.
That's because Democrats subsidize the Republicans with their taxes. Seriously, I live in California and make quite allot more than the national median income, but I can't own a house. My car is 10 years old. If you adjusted for the cost of living I probably make LESS than the median income for the US, and yet I pay more taxes simply because I make more. I simply don't have any money to give to charity.
Now, I used to live in Mississippi where very few people earn more than $30,000 a year but MOST people own houses and pay less taxes, yet those rednecks STILL complain about taxes being too high.
By the way, if you look at who gives the most to charity, it's poor African Americans, who tend to vote Democrat.
2) Ole Miss is a Space Grant [wikipedia.org] school. Why it's Ole Miss and not Mississippi State, where the Aerospace Engineering program is, I'll never understand. But that's how it is. There are several lines of space related research going on at both schools, though. Mississippi State may have the right engineers but that has nothing to do with having the right lawyers and the right law school. The Ole Miss law school is top notch, and the most powerful people in the state all went there, therefore it gets the best funding.
I suspect that the program is at Ole Miss because that's where (at least some) experts in space law happen to work. Your suspicion is correct, and her name is Joanne Gabrynowicz.
I knew someone was going to make a reference about Mississippians being stupid. Would you say the same thing about William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, B.B. King, Medger Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer or Morgan Freeman?
Considering my experience with Mississippi, the University of Mississippi, and Joanne Gabrynowicz personally, I know that this program is top notch. You probably never knew that both William Faulkner and Jim Barksdale went to Ole Miss. Oh, and Trent Lott went there too, but we Bay Area Ole Miss alumns don't talk about that:)
But anyway, we should all be happy because Joanne is a brilliant person who personally believes that the law is can be an idealistic pursuit that can make a real difference in our lives for the better. This program is her making and the people that I've met in the program for the most part aren't the cynical asses most lawyers get made out to be. This is exactly the person we want training the lawyers who will handle the future of space.
I'm not so sure that's the case. I think what's going on is that for the founders, Yahoo is worth an awful lot more as it's been them putting elbow grease into it. Sure, they might be over-valuing the company, but they're not in the best position to judge it's value. Imagine you've built a house yourself, your own sense of it's value would be inflated from what the market will pay for it. When it's you hard work, your sense of a thing's value is higher than otherwise. I know I'm always getting underpaid for my sweat, well ok maybe I don't sweat doing what I do...
Yeah, if you're good with OO like Java but like the freedom and flexibillity of Perl then Python really is the place to be. It's like Red Bull, it gives you wings.
For the record, I never referred to Foucault as a "sociologist". I am happily employed with a major dotcom doing work that I love. It was hard won getting here, perhaps because of my "illiteracy". And yes, I'm an easy going guy until people start throwing BS around.
Oh, come off it, I'm a very attractive man, with good hygiene. But I've just been too busy to get married. So if there are any ladies reading this, here's my craigslist personal.
I know you just finished your first semester in college, but do you have to bring your arrogant idiocy here? Look, my education is in a "humanity" (linguistics if you want to know), and it's arrogant little pricks like you that give those of us that are actually interested in discovering real falsifiable knowledge about the human condition a bad name. You want to know why it's hard for people with degrees like mine to get a job in the real world? Because of pricks like you. You want to know why sociology and linguistics programs around the world are underfunded? Because of pricks like you. So go back to working on your lame ass page on MySpace and then curl up in a ball on the bunk bed in your dorm and Foucault yourself.
I studied to become a sociologist, but all those circle jerks made my dick hurt!
Seriously, sociology is full of shit. It's just an excuse for liberals (of which I am one) to make up reasons why everyone else should be liberal.

Huh, I wonder if NeoOffice uses the OS X engine. I've had issues with pdf's exported with it in the past which is part of the reason why I tried Pages to begin with.

I don't know anything about endnote, but Pages has the ability to make beautiful PDF's. My resume is a pdf that I created with Pages and whether I got the job or not, people have always commented on how good my resume looks. I would never have been able to create it in Word.
You know, I actually didn't see that saying until I moved to Northern California. Previously, I lived in Mississippi where I never saw it. I have no clue what the origins of it are, but it pisses me off every time I see it.
I lived there for 20 years and I never heard it called that, as true as it is. Anyway, it makes complete sense to me that such a garish display of lights (not to mention the big fuck you! to the earth) would be in Kissimmee. The only other places I would expect that out of are Las Vegas and Gatlinburg, TN.
All you people reminding us that Google also contributes to Apache need to keep in mind that Google has allot more money than Yahoo! does. This isn't a pissing contest between the two companies--it's just good news.
Having really good interfaces may save lives, but it will also make it easier for troops to take lives, and that's what I think some developers at Apple would have problems with. In my field there is allot of research being funded by the military that I don't want to have anything to do with, even though it is pure research and is not applicable to weaponry. However, it is applicable to military intelligence which is used to track people down and kill them which I don't want to have anything to do with. Sure it might save the lives of a few US soldiers, but I'm more worried about the innocent civilians that are in the same building with the target. Soldiers have signed up to fight and possibly dye, however in modern warfare it's civilians who seem to do much of the dying.

Yeah, I never understood that myself. I figured anyone who participated in that perpetuated the myth that Mississippians are hateful people.
sigh...

I don't own three televisions, I own one that's bright enough to be seen through any wall in my house.
They are both advertising platforms period.
There, fixed that for you.
Man, I bet you have raging hemorrhoids!
I just go and play either pool or Wii bowling with a coworker.
