Sadly, lego these days seems to be made up of pre-made chunks. You know, the sort of thing where the kid is supposed to just join together 10 bits and voila! Plus, its really expensive.

I'm keeping all my lego technic for when I have children (or when I need to prototype something :)

Actually, I think you're wrong about the posters :). We can't see UV light at all, so we don't perceive it as white. When UV light hits those special posters, they fluoresc: The 'phosphers' in the poster absorb the UV light, then re-emit it as visible light (and lots of wavelengths are emmited, so we combine them as white)

Thanks, that sounds like a good sort of system. Good to have someone else describe it rather than just doing what seems right :).

How do you know something is corrupted though? Short of comparing the files to a backup, or a whole bunch of hashes...

Also, whats a good way of splitting the data across multiple CDRs? Putting them in an uncompressed RAR file seems the easiest, but I wonder if thats as reliable. (One bit gets screwed, the whole backup is gone, not sure how it archives it when its uncompressed...).

Once my exams are over I think I'll have to start finding ways of implementing this. Will probably have to make a program that does the time consuming stuff automatically. :)

Sounds like you know lots about backing up. I need some advice :)

I want to make sure a collection of documents, photos, videos and misc random stuff its accessible in the future. I'm constantly updating them (currently only at 1.6GB), so I currently I periodically back up the files onto a seperate HDD (same computer, I only have 1), and every few weeks I burn the lot onto a cdr.

When I 'backup' this stuff, I'm basically copying the originals again and again. If the originals get corrupted, I guess I'm sort of screwed.

Basically, I can't think of a good system that is reliable, easy and cheap. Should I be backing up using some sort of 'only copy if new' thing or what? I mean, what is a good system of backing stuff up? (Not what media or whatever as such, just the process) Any advice would be great (yeah, I know this is slashdot, but its worth a shot :P)

Compo is short for compensation. I don't have any experience with it myself, but I'm assuming its like the dole but with a bit more money, since you won't ever be able to get a job.

The dole is unemployment benefits/Social Security.

Incase anyone is interested (like, someone from a country without proper social security), I'm on Youth Allowance. I get paid money because I'm studying and my parents don't earn enough to support me (If my parents did, then I'd have to prove my independance from them).

Currently while I'm studying, the university costs are also paid for by the government via HECS. Basically its an interest free loan. Currently our goverment is trying to get rid of this system, not exactly sure why, probably don't want low-income earners to become educated.

By the way, regarding compo, it makes Australian's sound like they have the laziest workforce. Infact, we don't, I think we are close to the top when it comes to workhours. In the old days Australia was considered to be workers paradise, with extremely short working days etc, certainly isn't the case now, but some people seem to think it is.

A more constructive thing for me to say would be the cost of private sub-orbital flight is far less than public sub-orbital flight right now. Spaceship one only cost something like $20 million. How much money do you think the Soviet Union spent on in 40+ years ago? I don't know the figures, but I'm guessing its far far more than $20 million.

The amount of money was pretty small. Thats the point of privitization, the price goes down due to neccessity

I hope the a similar thing to the x-prize continues. The next big thing is getting into orbit (far more difficult than the sub-orbital flight, which was still very difficult).

The winning of the x-prize is step one. Hopefully, we'll see more progress in the years to come.

Yes, but lets not go calling the US stupid. The election was fairly close (well, not as close as the last election, so thats a bit odd) so its not like everyone in the US voted for bush.

And those who voted for bush might not be stupid, or even poorly educated. Lets look at an analogy:

You are stuck in room with no door and the only way you can observe the outside world is through a tv screen. You have no control over whats displayed on the tv screen. Sure, you might be skeptical, and not believe everything you see on it at first. However, having nothing to compare it to, you may eventually start believing it. After all, whos to say its wrong? The tv keeps saying its independant.

Ok, pretty stupid analogy which is obvious, but its not always the people's fault. Sure they could go and find some other source of information, but...ok, maybe it is partially their fault :P But...Hrmm, I'm running out of reasons to excuse the US population of immiment world destruction.

Anyway, I didn't vote. I wasn't allowed to. I couldn't find any information about where to vote in my entire state! (Australia, it is a state of the US right?)
