Hrm. Dunno why everyone keeps saying the AvP movie was crap. I really enjoyed it. Don't get me wrong, the plot was simple, stupid and the acting was terrible, but was a good action movie. I guess I quite liked playing AvP2, I sort of like the universe its set in. (Not really the proper Alien(s) universe, just its own).

Having said that, I couldn't watch AvP again and enjoy it.

I'm surprised no one else pointed this out: Its 9.8 m/s^2 ! Its acceleration, not velocity. I don't understand how 'm/s' kept being used in that person's technical summary (ok, maybe it was a typo :). Still an interesting read though.

Incase anyone is wondering about the whole gravity thing, heres are quick primer: force of gravity, F = GmM / r^2, where F is in Newtons, G is a constant, m and M (the two masses) are both in kg and r, the distance between the two bodies, is in metres.
When only considering gravity (no other forces), F = ma, where F is the gravitational force between the two bodies (same for both bodies, just in opposite direction), m is mass and a is acceleration measured in m/s^2. When you chuck F = ma into the original equation, you get ma = GmM/r^2 => a = GmM/r^2 / m => a = GM/r^2. (m/m = 1) Hence, the acceleration you experience due to gravity has nothing to do with your own mass, only that of the earth (and your distance from it). Thats why everything on Earth accelerates downward at about 9.817 m/s^2. Often the symbol 'g' is used to for acceleration due to gravity.

Just thought I mention that because simple gravity can be quite interesting :)

Based on everyone's replies, it seems everyone is paying to watch tv. Didn't realise so many people did that. Here in western australia, I only have access to the free channels, all 4 of them :). One doesn't have any ads at all though, since its paid for by the government, and another only has ads between shows, not during a show. I could pay for more channels, but I don't watch much tv anyway.

When it comes to channels you are already paying for , I'm sure people would be willing to pay a bit extra to not have any ads.

I hear a lot of people talk about blocking ads, be it on the internet or on tv. In the case of the 'net, its pretty straight forward, obstrusive ads like pop-ups are bad, while small less annoying ones are fine. Obviously you don't block the ads for a website you like unless they are really annoying: if everyone did the website would not be able to support itself and might have to move onto paid subscriptions etc.

I'm a bit confused though, for tv, if no one views the ads, companies will no longer pay for have their ads shown, and the tv channel will have to find a different source of income. By not watching ads, isn't it possible you can play a part in taking away the ability to watch stuff 'for free'? Of course, if you are paying to view the tv channel already, its unfair to have to view ads aswell (well, depends on the cost I guess).

Can someone refute what I've said, as it makes sense to me, but I'm sure I missed the point. (And no, not the argument 'if only a few people do it, it won't make any difference, thats an argument you can use for anything)

Badly acted (where do that *find* these people!), badly scripted (at times it seems like they're trying to ad-lib and failing), and worst of all the camera work was done by a trainee they grabbed off the street - half the time the camera is looking at the roof or floor not at the actors! Also the sound treatment is horrible - going from so quiet you can't hear them to blasting your ears out within the same scene.
Badly acted: Well, maybe. Then again, at least they seem sort of 'real'.

Camera work: Well, I think the 'camera' work for the CGI is brilliant, very 'documentary style' (like the creators said they wanted to aim for). Have to agree the 'shaky camera' for filming everything else can get a bit annoying at times. However, overall I think it gives a nice feel to it (yeah, other shows/movies have tried, but I think they got it right). Not everyone likes it though. For example, can be taken to the extreme, remember the Bourne Supremacy? Ugh. (good movie but overdone shaky camera)

As for the sound, I havne't noticed anything weird when the characters are talking, sounds normal. The space-battles however are probably what you are talking about. I was confused by it at first, but I think I realise what its supposed to be like. They are trying to go with the 'no sound in space' idea, but to make it interesting, they play the sounds as heard from within the ships. At least, thats what it seems like based on an interview I read. Once you watch it thinking that, it makes sense, but thats bad - You shouldn't have to think about the sound, it should just make sense.

Hope it doesn't go for more than one season though, I heard its only going to have 13 episodes, which would be good, but unlikely

I remember we had heaps of 'metric blocks' at our primary school. Like, heaps and heaps. I assume they were for teaching counting or something. Thing is there were the 1x10x1 blocks. Then there were the 10x10x1 blocks, and then the 10x10x10 blocks. We used to make huge towers out of them, building in a 'destruction button', so a single 1x10x1 was supporting the main frame. Push the button, and the whole thing falls straight downards (sort of implodes). Was great fun, not very safe though :P (towers were larger than us!).

The really good thing about making towers out of these however is learning to interact with other kids. Everyone starts of making their own tower, trying to make the hugest, but soon you all either run out of blocks or start having trouble keeping it stable. So, the kids start working together. Start discussing what the best design is, who does what and all that. Great way of teaching kids to work together.

For christmas donate a shitload of these blocks to a kid's school. (I assume they have these in the US? I know they are used to teach metric stuff, but are normally used just for building :P)

Pity lego technic costs so much, considering how simple it is.
