Adblock Plus, since about v~.7, has subsription. I prefer the filter subscriptions to the g updater. You aren't locked into one set of languge built groups; the subsriptions has other targets for diffrent languages like chines, russian, german and a few others. Not that filter g can't add those, it just that there are other to choose from instead of one from G. Plus it is easier to maintain 1 adblock plugin instead of 2 and if the website moves then you easily add a new filter subscription instead of updating the 2nd plugin.
US Secret Service agents used a confidential informant to hire Moeller
I guess it is good that the Secret Service doesn't have to worry about entrapment rules. It's great to hear that spam is getting wiped out but at what cost - the government is now hiring people to do things that will get them dragged into court? Maybe if everyone (including you, everyone you know and the government) stopped hiring/buying the service then maybe I might receive a little less spam and that is the only way it will really cease being a problem.
The Register World of Warcraft hackers have confirmed that the hiding capabilities of Sony BMG's content protection software can make tools made for cheating in the online world impossible to detect.
I would have to agree, Software developer shouldn't be held liable for the code written by them. You have PHB, stockholder value and among other things of simply getting paid. Code is written to get a check; as long as you are doing good in the environment and getting checks then there is no need to change. The coder is doing what is being requested. Manager don't like code reviews - fine, keep doing whatever you are told and keep getting paid.
Now lets talk about people that call themselves Software Engineers. Now a real engineer has to be certified and in some (US) states you can't use the title until you pass some criteria. A lot of people use the title on their resume any but whatchagonado. Now, If you are hired as an engineer (you put the title Software Engineer on your resume), then I believe that you are to be held at a different standard. A lot of engineers are held liable for damage done within say structures, bridges, building etc. Therefore, I only think the Software Engineers that are hired as such with proof of board certification should be held liable in some negligent cases for poorly done code. But as for some poor smuck that is just getting a check shouldn't be.
How about starting something useful Instead of wildcarding DNS why doesn't one of these venders wildcard TDLAs making them optional. What's that - you get more money by selling N domain names where N = TDLAs. Yeah it would be hard to wildcard TDLAs but after a few years it wouldn't matter, as the DNS names would become the selling point more than TDLAs. I guess the system could default to.com then.org or it could just show you the possible combination and learn which is the most popular based on your country or something. Regardless of the grainy details but I just would like to see the \.[.]{2-3}$ go away.
I always hate having to send in my hard drive for warranty repair. Years ago, I watched a friend recover information from a newly arrived warranty repaired drive. If the drive is dead and has to be sent into for warranty service, make sure one of those super powerful magnets from another drives is put around all over the hard drive case. Don't, know if that will wipe anything but I don't expect the manufacturer to ensure my data is secure.
Wouldn't it have been better to leave there then have a gap now? Now if they fill it back with something that might be better but I dont see how removing a barrier is better? Sure it could pull off a long piece but I would have cut it then stuffed it back in. And no I didnt RTFA.
you should buy a stock when it's hot and sell it when it's cold. Buy high, sell low?
I would like to clarify what you're saying just in case someone is reading this far down. In stock market evaluation, some theories you would buy hot stocks and dump them in a short time periods. Make a quick profit but the problem is you're mostly making the broker houses more profitable with all the transaction fees. But if the stock is hot enough then who cares as you make money.
In a view of buy low and sell high; you would buy a depressed stock. This is just the opposite of the herd. When everyone is selling you are buying and when everyone is buying you are selling. The demand of the stock is your indicator of buy or sell. This is a hard one to live by, as you don't really know where the bottom is. Look at companies like MCI, Enron; you have to pick carefully. But this is a kind of a similar method Warren Buffet uses to amass his fortune. Buying undervalued, yet profitable companies works for him.
The best bet is to stick with index funds (S&P 500) especially for portfolios below 100k. Historically these funds have yielded consistent returns and you have spread the risk. Low cost and very little hands on maintenance is better since your regular job is probably not working as an investor. You wont hit a home run with a one hit wonder but odds are you wont with a gamble on 1 stock.
you wouldn't really want to pay for the development costs of bug-free Windows, would you?
Microsoft was worth a half trillion dollars during the highlight of the dot com boom. With this kind of capital plus the software cost being distributed to ~90% of all desktops, you would think that at some point that you could get it right. There are methods to get really high quality code out of systems but they start with the need to do so. MS doesn't need to improve too much because it has worked in the past.
However, the kind of absolute reliability NASA was aiming for is only relevant for software that will be used for a limited time, in a controlled environment
Unless the software you use causes you financial harm or even death it isn't important? Back in the 40's during an above ground nuclear test, the scientist speculated that 7 people would die in the USA from radiation poisoning. Not too bad unless your one of those 7 huh.
the important question is how long vulnerabilities last
Quality begins from the start not the end. If you have a quality system, it can be measured and quantified in defects. Yeah, well fix the defects but you should know how many defects to expect. The quality arrives from input criteria of one system as an output to another; thus, simply fixing the bugs doesn't produce quality.
I know that it is hard to break tradition by going with a PG-13 movie; maybe the story line will be dark as promised. GL has been getting to squishy with Ewoks and Jar-Jar but if he does it right it will all be the calm before a storm.
Then I hope that GL release an un-rated director cut that will scare the bejebus out of who ever watches it; thus, causing a call to arms for censorship from radicals. The first stage of the war would be an invasion of some third world country as a diversion. The second stage would be to build an army so that none can rival the censorship force. The third stage would be to squash any rebellions and form an empire of censorship reminiscence of the pre-era of Ozzy music made me a killer trial. Now that would be a good prequel recursive story.
it was revealed that 92% of the 200 attendees surveyed would gladly trade enough information to steal their identities for a chance to win theater tickets.
Yeah it is cool to think that 92% of the people you have enough info to steal their identity. But lets put theory to practice and see how much of the 92% gave real information.
For me any form online I was born in 1900. My zip code is 12345, usually 666 Elm street, Amityville, NY. Phone number is 1-800-328-7448 and call anytime. I would make of 250,000+ or anything thing they have in the list that is higher. My occupation is the first drop down. Oh and my email address is who you are @mailinater.com. If the site looks up the information than I just go the governors web site and copy that info and use that. So I bet if you run a web site and you found that one than you probably could cross reference that info back to me and I would only say good job.
So I speculate that the 92% you have data from that you'll have 25% techices that give you 100% BS. It will occur to the general population once more and more people get burned to keep quiet.
You may be onto something here. What law would apply to licensing cases? Can you use line item veto to strike out an invalid clause or does the whole contract become void? If I remember correctly, the IP contract could be voided based on the wording of "anything in the past".
I read too much into it. You are correct as Daimaou hold the license; therefore, the company now owns it. Daimaou used the GPL tools code but invented a new algorithm without changing the tool "itself". Hmm tough for him.
Like I said, If Daimaou wrote the code prior to the IP agreement than the code isn't his to release to the company. The GPL license holders own it.
If Daimaou wrote the code after signing the IP agreement than he couldn't release code to GPL as he isn't the owner. The company owns that portion of the code; therefore Daimaou released the code illegally. Daimaou could potentially be held liable for any damages the company could prove due to the IP release. Furthermore, the code he introduced would have to be removed and possibly recoded. However, if the company wants to use any portion of the GPL code then said company is in violation of the original GPL'ed code.
The company can patent the new technology and can also decide to release the entire packaged software to GPL - these are the only two legal scenarios that can exist without rewriting the GPL code.
Will TV show production companies be the first to show some sense and offer their own downloads on a pay per view basis
They'll have to. Don't underestimate the bandwidth of Netflix, Blockbuster, and Walmart via mail truck bouncing down the road. One day the download scene may over take the mail truck bandwidth but the market is going to have to adjust. Distributors will have to figure out a way to make a profit that companies and consumers accept.
I bet the TV show 24 has done almost as well in rentals as it did during original airing. People aren't tied down to show times anymore. Tivo turned on a bulb and the shinning light has freed people to watch what they want when they want. With the FTTP arriving, the bandwidth is getting there now the companies have to get inline.
Funny, I was thinking along the same lines but with a twist.
Maybe so many people have been fired at work for allegedly surfing pr0n and come to find out it was a collaborative effort from the admins and managers just to remove a single person?
What if someone was forging BG's logs to make him look jacko freaky and releasing the data to the internet. If you dont know by now that all electronic logs that are created by a machine can be created by a person that looks like it came from a machine.
Maybe the next Hubble would be built around servicing from a UAV (USV unmanned space vehicle) like device. The USV could have some really small rockets just big enough to dilver the fuel or whatever. The Hubble like device could have mechanisms to grab the other vheicle and ground crews could control the replacement actions or a the robot could do the servicing it's self.
You are right - building a robot serviceable device would probably cost a 100x but it might just be the right way to go?

Lets do the apples and apples thing.
The tivo machine you can get ~$100 after some rebates. Now lets add in a lifetime subscription fee of $300 and an upgraded drive that any PC user would have which is 160 gig for $100. Now we have apples to compare against a PC which make it a conservative $500 for the Tivo machine.
I just built a HTPC using a cheap MATX board for $50, got the hard drive $100, case $50 processor $150, memory 1gig $150, capture card $50. For a grand total of $500 and best yet this machine is the fastest in the house right now.
So you can't use cost as an issue of DIY. Just not wanting to do it is the only viable excuse.
Games makers - All the game makers have to do is add an opening scene where that kid that spray painted those cars gets caned. No matter what the games was about it would be socially acceptable in any Asian country.
Lawmakers - imagine what how other countries are using propaganda when you make laws against *EVIL* games. You may be making your country look more like a repressive communist society.
AOL users got their bad name by posting too many ME TOO!, what is a.b.misc, and reply:01/99 - can you repost 2-99.
Giganews and other big name vendors will gladly sell you Usenet service and best yet you can change the port in which you connect with; say port 80 and AOL cant block as they cant figure out if your using HTTP or NTP; they could block the IP address but then again you could use an anonymous proxy and the battle continues. That being said, I hope people know that there are other ISPs that are willing to have you as a customer. If the law suites go after say Giganews then I bet there is some Swiss news account (ok ok when I say Swiss accounts I mean services that wont divulge any information to anyone no matter who's asking).
