Um, I think you missed the point. To me(and I could be wrong, this is just my own interpretation) it wasn't really a "love" story, it was more a story about self-discovery vis-a-vis the other. Whether the "other" be a completely alien culture in a new land with an unfamiliar language or someone from a different generation. They discovered more about themselves by changing their environments whether they wanted to or not, challenging themselves to do something different, to at least temporarily escape their own identities and be someone new.
Bob and Charlotte aren't perfect, or even likable, but I think that makes the story more powerful. Even if you have never been to Japan you can empathize with their journey. Not to mention some of the spectacular camera work and music.
But again, that is my own opinion of the film, feel free to draw your own conclusions.
There have been a lot of films even recently that have done quite well with small budgets. One of my favorites is "Lost In Translation" which only cost $14 million, and movies have been done for a lot less than that which are still spectacular. Just because Lucas cannot tell a story without that much money doesn't mean it is impossible.
is to do your undergrad in the UK(where tuition is insanely cheap comparatively and for undergrad the quality is about the same) and then do grad work in the US(where outside of Cambridge and Oxford, the quality is generally better). Just my 2 cents.

Most of the principals were in the country by the time Bush came to office, killing Bin Laden wouldn't have done much. Even now, Al Qaeda is not some monolith organization, and it is academically lazy to think of it as one. Bin Laden's capture would certainly have a demoralizing effect, but it would not cripple the organization, nor would killing him in early 2001 have done so. Hell, we really need to get Al-Zawahri, but have been failing at that.
9/11 CANNOT be blamed on one individual. True, Clinton did not do as much as he should have during his term, but Bush obviously didn't see the flaws being all that major as he didn't do anything about them in the first 9 months. Also recall that anything Clinton did in the Middle East(most hypocritically was bomb Iraq) was labeled as "Wag the Dog" by Republicans. Meanwhile, when they do similar things they are being "tough on terrorism".
The intelligence failures showed systemic flaws in the US intelligence gathering organization, flaws that go back decades(hell, Bush Sr. was head of the CIA for a few months). As George Tenet said, 9/11 was a "failure of imagination" on the part of the intelligence community. And so far in my opinion Bush has done almost nothing to fix those flaws. Well, he has allowed Army translators who are in short supply to be fired because they are gay, I guess there is always that. Also see the court cases of dismissed FBI agents who claimed they were ignored when they warned about attacks. The system is broken, and Clinton blaming Bush and Bush blaming Clinton surprisingly won't fix it. Killing Bin Laden won't fix it. Iraq certainly won't fix it. Nor will using homeland security money to pay off political backers and punish adversaries(Because we all know Indiana has the most potential terrorist targets). What needs to be done cannot be boiled down to a soundbite, but I do know that past administrations, this administration and in all likelihood future administrations don't have the will or desire to really fix it, but instead like to apply popular band-aids and use ad-hominem attacks on their critics.
Yeah, but imagine the sheer number of geeks that would line up to have their semen shot into space! Erm, wait, on second thought, maybe that isn't such a pleasant scenario.....
that is totally getting screwed with these new "higher resolution" videos. My powerbook is only 18 months old and it chokes when watching The Daily Show now. Come on Apple, not all of us own dual core intel macs, I paid you a lot of money and I feel really burned about the fact that you don't seem to care about your older products. I am not giving another penny to Apple until they fix this, as they seem not to want my business.
Not to mention Apple's policy of "we will give it to you when we give it to you" when it comes to releasing episodes of the daily show. Um, excuse me, I can watch a lot of the clips for free on Comedy Central's website for free before it is released via iTunes. Why do people who paid get treated worse than the people who get stuff for free(legally even!)?
Screw Apple, my next machine is going to be a Linux box.
I wonder if they will ever stock books in other languages. I want to try to learn Korean(because Korean women are hot:P) and I think that being able to download books written in Korean(childrens books at first, then getting more advanced) would be an interesting way to learn the language. I can always go to hanbooks.com which offers some decent prices, but being able to integrate e-books with dictionaries and whatnot would be really cool. Plus you can be much less limited in your selection.
The bookstore has more than just "regular" books

For example they have manga too(albeit a small selection right now). If Sony doesn't fuck it up totally it could be an interesting distribution model. But given their history in this type of thing, I don't have too much confidence.
We all know that we are just trying to ignore the real issue here. Lets see where we stand:
1. Oil is in short supply
2. Oil comes from dead Dinosaurs.
So we all know what the solution tot his problem is, but the environmentalist wackos won't let us do it: we need to kill more Dinosaurs! They say they don't exist, but I know that is just junk science. Who is with me? I know at least Turok has got my back.
Not to mention a huge conflict of interest. Froogle didn't directly get commissions if you looked at/bought something, but did sell contextual ads. So what should google do if the person who buys the advertisement has a slightly higher price than someone who came up on froogle. The ad buyer just wasted money so the other guy could get a sale. Not to mention it calls into question how accurate everything really is on froogle. I mean, do ad buyers get preference in the search results?
Do I want an employer to look at a paper I wrote about a controversial subject(totally unrelated to work) in freshman year? Honestly I think that if students knew that their paper was going to be shared with more than them and their English teacher I would object too. I think that I would have much less candor and thus learn much less both about the subject at hand as well as myself if I knew my paper was going to be recorded for many people to see for perpetuity. I also think it would hamper my skills as a writer.
I'm against cheating, but I think the solution is to make severe punishments. Kick the student out of school if they cheat. A lot of schools say they reserver the right to do so, but are so afraid of getting sued that they rarely ever do. I know people who got caught and just got a slap on the wrist. If students see little to no risk and lots of reward, they are going to cheat end of story.

as I did with mine. I intentionally stayed in college 6 years*(1.5 of those were spent doing internships) because I wanted to explore everything there was. My AP credits allowed me to get a lot of stuff out of the way so I could explore. I took an internship at a steel mill and worked at an R&D Lab in Japan. I majored in computer engineering and minored in math and Japanese, and actually took a lot of other classes that I didn't have to take because I thought they were interesting. I have something like 32 credits that don't really "count" as it were, for my degree. I am sure as hell glad I took them though because I will probably never get another chance to take a class in world music or Japanese literature.
Those sure as hell don't help me on my job or in grad school next year, but I really felt like they helped me grow as a human being.
You have to be born of the day of the 2nd impact or else you can just forget it. Even then, it gets a little tricky. Your mother has to be dead AND the magi have to pick you based on the Marlmaduke report. Then you are either blessed with incredibly high sync rates OR you have to train in the entry plug simulator(which also means skin tight body suits and sitting in a pool of a funky liquid). You can bypass this if they need a pilot in an emergency however. After all that, they will finally put you in a robot when an angel attacks.

we need to figure out way to combine gambling and porn.(well, more than the cliche strip poker, which I don't want to play online...ewww..)
Might I suggest games like "How many grams of heroin has this woman done in the last half hour" or "How many men has this 'virgin' slept with?"
Wait, is there a difference?
