Are you a commuter? If you are, then you would probably realize the value of having a device that is less cumbersome to use than even the smallest laptop(and the battery lasts a bit longer too). If you are not then I could understand why you wouldn't be in to this, but there are lots of situations where people don't like to use laptops, even if they aren't part of your life.

Sony Reader Taking Hold?

· Score: 4, Insightful
without DRM, but I'm assuming that their book store is going to impose less DRM than the one they launched in Japan. In that bookstore, you could only "buy" your book for 2 months, after that it became unreadable. That defeats the whole purpose of having an e-reader! If I'm laying down $400 for an e-reader, I want to be able to bust out "Breakfast of Champions" on a whim, not make sure that my license is up to date before doing so. One of the reasons I don't buy a lot of books right now is that I hate having to find storage places for them, plus I tend to move around a great bit and shipping books is expensive and a pain.
I think a sanely priced bookstore would be a great idea, but till then I'm sticking with the library!
Why not have punch-out 3 for the DS though? Seriously, the original arcade game was dual screen, so naturally they have to put out a copy on the DS. It's been way too long since they released a punch out game!
Off-topic, but I'm an American living in Germany and I was considering taking a weekend trip up to Denmark. What is there to see(besides the dark!) in Denmark that I could do on a Saturday?
resumes. I have been looking for a job on Monster and got nowhere with the jobs I physically applied to, but just for kicks made my resume searchable. Nothing but a headhunter for a few months and basically I forget about it. Then about a month ago out of the blue I get an email from a person who wants to set up an interview, and now I am just waiting on the formalities before I get the job offer of my dreams.
Now it's time to share your job site stories; reply if you had
a)no luck with job sites and swore them off forever
b)got the job through going through the "official" application process
c)were contacted through someone searching your resume
d)If Cowboy Neal set you up with this awesome freelance gig.
The Sedition Act made it illegal to criticize the president or congress. This seems like it's so broad that "malicious anonymous posts" could be anything that criticizes the current administration. IE someone tries to attempt discourse on some right wing blog and the owner of the blog doesn't like it then they could throw them in jail. Scary stuff....
Or it could be that there aren't enough users interested in radio to justify the cost of adding it. Yeah, it might increase sales a little bit, but is the slight increase of sales really worth adding seldom-used radios to the other millions of iPods that you would have sold regardless? I know conspiracy theories are popular here, but can you actually make a business justification for adding a radio? Even if a radio adds only $5 of cost per iPod, if you are selling millions iPods, then you are adding an extra outlay of millions of dollars for sales that aren't all that much higher. Not to mention increases in support costs.
As per your "control" theory, there is nothing that says you have to use iTunes Music Store music on your iPod, you can load pretty much whatever you want on it.
Um, just a question, have you actually LIVED in other countries and the US? I have lived in the US, Japan, and Germany and the US system is the cheapest(esp. if you want to use it as your only phone). It costs me 65 euro cents a minute to call on my mobile phone, it costs 20 cents a minute to call a mobile phone from a land line(which costs 20 euros a month just for basic service, it's cheaper to call across the globe than to call a cell phone across the street). You can get a good plan in the US for about $40 a month including taxes with more minutes than you could ever use(yeah, incoming calls aren't free, but with the amount of non-metered time and minutes they give you a month it isn't really a big deal). Not to mention it cost my mother $13 for a 4 minute call to my cellphone from the US. Yeah, there aren't cheap mp3 services, but honestly I don't give a fuck, I have an iPod for music, I don't need it on my phone.
Still better than a lot of other stuff on TV. It's really hard to say whether they should quit or not, sometimes there are single lines in the episodes still that make me laugh more than anything else on TV. For example, in my personal least favorite episode, the cowboy one(which unfortunately starred the late, great Johnny Cash in one of his last roles ever), one of my favorite lines is uttered which for me summed up my childhood very well:
Bart walks into class after being attacked by a dog, he is bruised and his clothes are tattered Nelson says: "Ha-ha Bart's family is poor"
Brilliant.
and tell me that there is a lot of "Japanese nationalism" there. If you find ONE Japanese movie that is almost considered odd. American films through and through.
It could just be that the XBOX doesn't appeal to Japanese tastes. End of story.
Obligatory Simpsons quote:
Hans Moleman to Apu after being locked in the Kwik-e-Mart for 4 minutes: You wasted 4 minutes of my life and I want them back! Oh, I'd probably just waste them anyhow.
Libel and slander are legal terms though. In this case the government didn't revoke his scholarship, the school, who offered the scholarship in the first place, did. If I hire somebody to paint a fence and they start cursing up a storm while doing so I have every right to pay them for services rendered and kick them out and get someone else to paint the fence. Why? Becuase it's my money he is using, if the painter doesn't like my terms then they can go find someone elses fence to paint. It's the same situation here.
I think one of the things that really helped spur on DVD adoption over VHS wasn't the prettier pictures and better sound, it was the fact that you can do much more with a DVD than you ever could with a cassette. You can skip to whatever scene you want, you can access extras, you can change the audio track to your language of choice(if it was on the dvd of course!), you can add subtitles, you can get rid of subtitles, you can hear commentary, you don't have to play with tracking etc.
The only difference that I see between DVD and HD-DVD is prettier pictures, and to me it just doesn't matter that much, but I am in no way representative of the public at large...
Huh? e=mc^2, where c is the speed of light, a constant. I do believe you are talking about the equation for momentum, which is mv(mass times velocity) ie increasing either mass or velocity raises you momentum linearly.....
I will most likely have a series of long flights ahead of me in a month(Munich to Pittsburgh and then a few days later Pittsburgh to Osaka), and while I know I am too early for this tech, I have been looking for an alternative to flying because I HATE airplanes. First off, they waste tons of fuel and the environmentalist in me hates that, secondly for me they are the most uncomfortable things ever. I am over 6'2(185 cm) and since I'm not rolling in the dough I can only afford coach. Of course, a few days ago when I was flying from Seattle to Amsterdam, what does the guy in front of me do right after takeoff? Reclines his seat back as far as he can.
What are the options besides flying for quick(define quick as can make a cross-ocean trip in a weekend) alternatives to flying that are both fuel efficient and don't do irreversible knee damage?
It will be interesting to see whether or not Apple will update the powerbook or iBook first. Obviously the powerbook needs a serious upgrading, although I love the powerbook that I bought in May of last year, if I didn't get $400 off due to a very generous campus promotion, I would have never bought it. The machine is way too underpowered compared to the competetion.
That being said, the switch over to Intel is obviously going to be a big one and the chances for serious bugs is still high even with a lot of testing. Apple could try rolling out the mini/iBooks first to test the waters, knowing that pro customers make up a lot of Apple's revenues and are much less tolerant of bugs than say consumers.
Regardless, twenty-aught-six should be an interesting year for Apple!
This is obviously targeting the whole "convergance device" market, but I have to wonder, will the battery life be able to keep up? I personally don't like these "all in one" type wonders because a)the interface usually sucks(possibly fixable, but we humans aren't changing form factor any time soon) b)if the battery dies, I not only lost my mp3 player, but I lost my phone, my video game machine, my address book etc. and c)(somewhat related) if the device gets lost/stolen then I am not only out my phone but mp3 player and video game machine as well.
I personally carry around a cheapie phone that *gasp* makes phone calls, an iPod and a DS. I usually have my backpack with me, and when I don't, I have enough pocket space to carry the stuff. Also, when I go to an event where my toys may be put at risk(say out drinking) I usually only carry my phone with me. If someone wants my 40 euro phone with about 20 euros of talk time on it bad enough to steal it, they need it more than I do.
Neat device, but not for me.
My favorite line from the article: "Google will unveil its own low-price personal computer or other device that connects to the Internet." If these "sources" are so close to the investigation, how can they not even know whether or not the device is a PC?!
Also, the mention of a "google box" that will move music and video between the PC and TV seems like it really came out of left field....
Um, how do you know when I receive mod points? So basically if I say an idea that you like isn't perfect, it's "slanderous". Wow, you must live in a pretty closed world for someone who seems to enjoy being "open"
People have different opinions than you do, that doesn't make the opinions any less valid. Deal with it.
Oh, and calling someone an "idiot" because they disagree with you is well, immature to say the least. It really does detract from your argument.
But there is a difference, the military users are trained to use this type of technology, and are very well disciplined. I don't want to have to be "trained' to use my $600 toy, nor should I have to have a lot of discipline to train myself to use a toy.
looks a lot like an "l" causing me to read it as "blomarker". I guess my overall health would be greatly improved if women would help raise my "blomarker" level too:P
Yeah, but there is no USB equivalent of Firewire 800....(most pcs don't even have firewire, let alone firewire 800 though)

Have you seen a G5 tower? Or lifted one? I think the big reasons Mac owners don't hit their G5 is that the G5 hits back!

I'd hate to see your other definition for "handy" :P
