  1. Re:Mac Mini Cluster?? on Colocate Your Mac mini · · Score: 2, Insightful

First, you are looking at the wrong stats. If you plan to run your cluster as anything besides a side show, heat/power concerns are going to be as big of factor in your cost calculations as the hardware itself. I don't know if the mac mini gives off a lot of heat but it's something to take into consideration.
However, the fact that you probably cannot upgrade the ethernet capabilities in a mac mini to even fast ethernet is probably the bigger strike against the mac mini. In a lot of problems that employ parallel computing, the network latency can be as important as the processor speed(of course, there are plenty of exceptions and plent of "trivially parallel" problems). The Dell is a bit more upgradable than the mac mini. Though it's not nearly as cute.

Um, the people who have the patents are the ones that made the standard. They didn't have to publish it at all if they didn't want to. If you don't like the fact that MP3 is patented, use OGG or other non-patented formats. The MP3 patent isn't like one-click where they patented something very obvious(such as a digital form for storing music), they patented their algorithm. Like I said, it's not the only algorithm available, and if you don't like the patent, don't use the stuff. Simple as that. Not everyone enjoys publishing their ideas just so free software can "borrow" them......

Heh, it's an even bigger problem in Japan. For years, Japan has had a torrid love affair with the big companies, the bigger it got, the better. The companies would develop relationships with other companies that even governed what kind of beer their employees should drink. However, the companies got(and still are) way too big for their own good, and made every product you can think of. The beucracy and red tape puts makes the US government look efficient by comparison. This led to a lot of stagnation and now Japan is finally coming to realize that small, focused companies aren't really that bad.
For example, Mitsubishi manufactures everything from LCD monitors to trains to escalators, to motor vehicles. Not surprisingly, one of the groups(Mistubishi Motors) is now in a lot of financial trouble.

Any freshman course in Engineering economics can tell you that 99% of the time it's better to buy than to make. You only make what is core to your business. Ford's methods of buying parts/inventory tracking wasn't too unique, so there would have been no reason to make the software unique.
However, if all you do is buy, you give yourself no competive advantage over the other guy who has access to the same resources as you. Ford probably has a lot of custom software in their factories because that is what really differentiates themselves from the rest of the pack(whether the distinction in this case is good or bad is left as an exercise to the reader).

The problem is so will the US. While I don't agree with China's policies, I have to hand it to them, they are smart. They are akin to a drug dealer in a lot of ways, give the products real cheap, then get the US hooked on them so they will keep on coming back for more. They know how to play on the greed of the US and they are integrating themselves into the economy almost to the point where we would be in a shock if we were to try to get rid of them.
This is a country that as little as 6 years ago said war with the US is inevitable. They are spending vasts sums of money to modernize their military, and may very well get the EU to destroy the ban on selling them weapons.
Bush's election is the best thing that ever could have happened to the Chinese. They can talk all they want about trade reform and IP laws, but because they realize that if they stop buying US bonds, the US economy is fucked, and use that to their every advantage. I know Dick Cheney likes to pretend that deficits don't matter, but maybe I'm just old fashioned when I think that letting the largest communist country on earth make us their bitch ISN'T such a bright idea......
Maybe the US should take a step back and think about the costs and benefits of our trade realationship with China.
