So how much DO you have to pay to get your dumb post onto slashdot's front page?  Seriously.

  4. One size fits all on Yahoo Offers All-You-Can-Eat Storage and Bandwidth · · Score: 4, Insightful

The thing that annoys me about most hosting plans is that they scale up disk space and bandwith together--as if one inevitably follows the other.  For example, I have a miniscule website that hosts a ~200 meg game download.  So I need a whopping ~300 megs of disk space.  But when I get a spike of downloads, I can hit several gigs of bandwith per day.  But I would have to purchase additional "disk space" along with bandwidth if I were going with a traditional hosting plan.

    Annoying.

  5. oh well that makes it okay then on Comcast's New Terms of Service Disclose Traffic Management · · Score: 1

It's all fine then, since after all I have the option of simply terminating my internet service with Comcast if I don't like the new Terms of Service, which have been posted conveniently to Slashdot for my perusal.

So I'll just have to go with my other option, AT & fucking T DSL, and I'm sure their much more civilised terms, eh?  You think that's what they've got, some decent terms of service?  Do you?

In the last year or two, I can't tell you how many times people have asked me where they could get a good deal on MS Office, only to have me mention OpenOffice as a free alternative and had it eagerly siezed upon.

It's strange, really.  I'm like "You must need to open that spreadsheet file?" and they're like "It's an *.xls!"  "Yess...why don't you try this out?"  "It can open this file!?"  "Probably" and then so far it's always been fine and they're quite elated not to have had to buy MS Office.  I mean, it's not like they LIKE it, they're just USED to it.

I think it is only an issue for a relatively small percentage of users who used more advanced features that most people (including myself!) never, ever use.

Yes but...why do we need a downloader at all?

I recently bought my first ever digital music...because I couldn't find it anywhere else, and it was cheaper than buying the cd.  I bought it from Amazon because there is no way I would ever buy DRM'ed music, of course.

But if I wanted to buy the whole album, I had to use their downloader...you know...the specific reason I don't want to buy DRM'd music, installing someone's random crappy software on my delicate Windows box.
