IMHO, this isn't big news.
Sony have pretty much confirmed that the PS3 will have WiFi (and so it should, as a next gen console) and that the PSP will act as a PS3 controller.
This price is much less than the PS2 was at the time of release and I think it's important to remember that the PSP has a 16:9 LCD screen, MP3/4 playback, WiFi, etc, etc to make it different from the GameBoy's pricing.
The price is reasonable enough for many people (myself included) to spend over-the-odds for an early PSP without regrets (except those with faulty units!).
As for the launch title list, I'm pleased enough. The prospect of FIFA 2005 and Wipeout on the PSP is enough to keep me grinning:^)
I have just tried and no it does not fit.
The UMD slot is just big enough for a UMD and by placing a UMD on top of an MD, it is clear the MD is longer and wider.
On the PS2, those funny blocks spin around on screen for a few secs when the PS2 first boots up. If this is useless then then it can be cut out. If this is a nice visual while the PS2 performs vital bootup functions then I'm sure it can be optimised on the PSP.
Then the game makers try to drive us nuts with still-screens we cannot skip, showing company logos, copyright info, and what not. These are a real time-waster. Chop.
Cutting out the fmv / intro video will reduce loading time too.
Plus the obvious - developers can optimise or reduce loading when developing for the PSP.
The PS2 is well known for its slow bootup and in-game loading (just compare it to an XBOX!) but Sony have some top notch developers and maybe things won't be so bad.
Besides, a 30s loading wait wouldn't put me off one. I think Sony are banking on that gorgeous screen making up for any other issues;)
While I agree that the RIAA doesn't have the best interests of the average music fan at heart, artists deserve their money.
Simply going gung-ho, trying to swamp the net with "pirated" music available to download and increasing the "problem" is not a solid solution, imho. A lot more illegal downloading is only going to make things worse for the music industry, providing yet more encouragement to clamp down on those of us who do download music.
What we as customers can do, however, I don't know but this aggressive, unconstructive attitude is one that I personally feel is not helping us.

This US Patent shows some interesting ideas from Sony: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=P TO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv. html&r=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01&p=1&S1=20040266529.PGNR.& OS=DN/20040266529&RS=DN/20040266529
If this is a big deal for Nintendo then I fear for their 'Revolution'.
Yeah, to 42,003 after a few Slashdot readers actually read TFA ;)
The next geration of consoles, no matter the brand, will be freaking amazing.
Umm... that does sound familiar. :^)
Did you happen to make the very same post 6 years ago before the PS2 was released?
I do agree though!
Sony have said they are making a 'considerable' loss on each PSP, selling for much less than the manufacturing cost: http://spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=7878

Good luck resisting a full-price purchase ;)

Perhaps a little optimism wouldn't hurt.

1. Right-click on an image
2. Select 'Copy Image'
3. Paste into mspaint, Photoshop, etc.
This works fine in FireFox 0.9.3
