What would be more interesting is to see what the age range of the parents is. You have to remember that today's younger (as in 30's) parents were more than likely yesteryears' occasional/hard core gamers (since games didn't really become popular until late 70's early 80's).

The fact that they grew up around games and are more comfortable with them than previous generations would surely have some effect on their view of how violent games are as well as their concern for that violence. An interesting parallel would be that of the music industry and parents concern about the type of music their kids listen to.

If you were to ask an older generation of parents if they were concerned about the disco their kids listen to, they would probably say they were very concerned. However, ask a generation of parents who grew up around disco and they would more than likely say they are more concerned about the rock music their kids listen to than the disco. Ask the next generation about rock music and they would be more concerned about rap than rock..etc.

Seriously, I'm all for anti spyware and anti scam measures, but is this really going to address the core issue? That is, people aren't educated enough to NOT fall for scams? And if they AREN'T educated enough to not fall for it in the first place, what good will the law do?

A current example may be those "multi level marketing schemes" like Vector or Pre paid legal (they are really just pyramids in disguise). We've got laws against pyramid schemes, and yet these companies are still around (they call themselves multi level marketing in most cases, just to avoid the legal hassels). The people who actually get caught up in the schemes are those who are a) to stupid or b) to greedy to not realize what's going on; and by the time the person has found out that they have been duped, the perp (I've been watching law and order :D ) is long gone. Incidentally those people who would be fooled by spyware are more than likely those who wouldn't know how to deal with it in the first place (spybot, adaware, or cleaning the system registry manually).

And then there's the question of how many people will actually actively pursue a lawsuit against spyware companies. I'm willing to bet that most people will say, "spyware is against the law, the companies can't do that and if they install it on my computer I'll write a nasty letter to them" instead of "spyware? time to sue". Almost like what's going on with spam..

It's funny, the first time my teacher (in middle school) told me that the war wasn't about slavery, I was pissed. The older I got, the more I learned and realized that the only reason slavery even BECAME an issue was that it was the South's main economic tool. Without slaves the South's economy would go to shit..Lincoln realized this, hence he issued the emancipation proclamation. He said himself that if he could unite the country without freeing slaves, he would do it.

And think about it, how could the war really be about slavery when lincoln owned slaves?

  24. Re:Reparations on Ask Green Party Presidential Candidate David Cobb · · Score: 1

Perhaps they should, alot of people seem to forget that the end of slavery wasn't the end of mistreatment towards "People of Color" (the term, by the way, includes all of those people who are NOT of white anglo saxon ancestry..meaning asian, hispanic, black, native american, etc. The correct term for this discussion would more than likely be "descendants of african slaves"). In fact, the "end" (if you really want to call it an end) didn't really arrive until just UNDER 40 years ago (civil rights movement anyone? how quickly people forget). But that is a whole other topic.

The funny thing about using reparations funds to increase the level of education in low income areas is that not all descendants of slaves live in low income areas. And how do you classify what low income areas recieve reparations? Because there are white people who live there as well. Honestly I think it would be better to invest the money into a college fund for those people of color who have been in this country for X number of generations. That HELPS to weed out imigrants.

Realistically though, the US isn't going to ever repay reparations; it never intended to. It would cost way more money than the government (regardless of what political party is in power) is willing to shell out.

I mean seriously, if funds are being reallocated from the national education budget to the war on terrorism, what makes you think they will give money to people of color? There would be a better chance of a person of color becoming president.
