Rumor has it that the Xbox2 is in the works. Once the Xbox2 ships, the price of the Xbox will drop dramatically. At some point, you'll probably be able to pick up a used Xbox in a pawn shop for $50. $50 makes a nice price for a second computer like an internet terminal for the kitchen or some other similar appliance. So, some will say it's a waste of time to hack then and mod them in this manner, but once they're dirt cheap in pawn shops and Ebay, you'll thank the modders.

I could point out the irony of your statement, but I digress.

Before you go around suing people, I need to ask you some questions. What is the model number of your friends' Gateway PC? My office is a huge Gateway customer. I have installed multiple distros (including SuSE 9.1) on the E-4100 and E-2100 desktops. I've also installed linux on several of their laptops, including the M275 running SuSE that I'm typing this on. I've had some interesting problems, mostly because certain kernels dislike some hardware (for instance, FC2s installer kernel panics on this M275). I'd hardly call this laptop incompatible, it just happens that FC2s kernel and this laptop dislike each other.

If you haven't done so already, take a tool like Darik's boot and nuke and wipe the entire disk clean before installing (a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda accomplishes the same thing). I've noticed that on some Gateways the boot record refuses to die, and this is the only way to get rid of the NT boot loader. Occasionally XP won't install for the same reason.

Has your idiot friend called Gateway tech support? Gateway does dabble in linux, and might be able to offer some explanation as to why you're having issues. Gateway is in bed with M$, as most vendors are, but they haven't done anything to make me believe that they're anti-linux.

Sony Microvaults are complete crap, and Sony finally stopped making them. Lexar Jump drives are rumored to be poorly made, but I have no personal knowledge. Simpletech Bonzais work well, but they have a really ugly shape and size. Our users don't seem to care for them, even though they are reliable.

As the drives are getting more popular, they're becoming cheaper. Hopefully the manufacturers don't sacrifice quality to compensate.

Most drives, when unplugged improperly, will lose data. Usually it's just data loss, and like you say, file recovery utilities have no trouble getting it back.

Even when the drive is dismounted properly, it stills corrupts itself on occasion. Out of 30 drives we bought, 20 of them are now completely dead. Explain to me why 20 out of 30 Sony drives fail, when in the same users hands drives from other manufacturers work flawlessly.

I know I'm not alone, I've found several well written usenet articles on this problem, along with some difficult fix procedures that sometimes work. Sony obviously has a defective product, but they refuse to own up to it.

Our company purchased a nice supply of Sony Microvault USB keychain drives. For whatever reason, these drives just stop working. If you unplug a drive without properly dismounting it, it will fail to be recognized under any OS as a drive. Windows reports it as a "security device". There is no way to recover the data, the drive is shot. Further testing showed that even if you dismount it properly, there's a good chance of corrupting the drive.

Call up Sony tech support, you'll get bounced around to several support numbers (some long distance, some toll free). Most of the time you get directed back to the number you previously dialed, and your issue is never resolved.

This is a documented problem, and on the occasion that you're able to get the correct tech support staff Sony will refuse to fix it. There is a lengthy process to fix the drive, but it's a pain and your data is unrecoverable. Sony has since stopped making the Microvaults, but it's a good example of how bad their support really is.
