The average unpatched-IE joe is surfing the net when he comes across a site. As soon as he opens up the site...there's a sexy blonde dancing: [pop-up] Sexy Blonde: Do you want a piece of me? (with a "Yes" "No" button) Joe: (Thinking this could be it) Clicks "YES"
Immediately, big bang of BSOD with all lights flashing then normalcy returns...
Joe: (thinking this was usual) tries to resume surfing...only to notice that he no longer has the mouse or keyboard. He sits there watching while "sexy blonde" takes over.:)
Yet another termed coined to increase sales. How is this not a hype? The corporations and self-appointed analysts think people have not bought enough (or we've not earned enough) so we should go ahead and create a hype so that hype-deprived consumers will jump on and start clicking wildly. Honestly I think it just propagates the culture of over-consumption and waste.
The prefix "cyber" negates the requirement of naming a day there...it can be any day for that matter. If I want to buy something, it is "cyber that-day" for me.
As a developer all I should have to do is tell my computer to build me an award winning DB app in Excel and then rake in the cash.
Two words: Wishful Thinking. BTW, who would want to build a db app in excel...that is so-not-like-a-lead-programmer.
My wife works for an electronics company and they are trying to bring some linux servers in the company. I've been using Linux at home for about 2 years now and she's been watching me work and tinker while listening my occasional rants about the **OS-with-biggest-market-share**. She naturally got interested over time and wanted to use Linux on her office IBM Thinkpad but she wanted to start out with installing it herself. Knowing how enterprises have PC's with don't-touch-it policy, I suggested that she talk to the IT person in her company about her plans. I was pretty sure she would get a no-no but to my surprise the IT department said GO AHEAD! do what you want to. We will reimage your laptop with windows...but don't forget to backup your stuff first.
An IE Worm or Outlook Work is absolutely **a windows worm** since they they are all designed by Microsoft and integrated tightly in the OS. Linus didn't write PHP and any Linux distro or BSD's don't require you to install PHP. You are free to install or uninstall PHP. Attributing this worm to Linux is like blaming Windows for an Adobe Acrobat vulnerability.
H1B's are getting paid less does not come as a surprise. H1B's are called here just because they are comparably skilled AND can be paid less. I know a company that would only hire H1B's and then keep them under constant pressure of losing their job. This way they would work with their head down and mouth shut. Not exactly what the H1B's have heard about America (land of free)...not their fault either that they landed in this trap. However, I also believe this kind of exploitation and outsourcing has its roots in capitalism. Earlier in the previous century when the world was not so much open...technology could be kept confined but in this age...it is hardly the case. With technology pervasive, more people get into it and we start to see the blurring of lines. Today India and China are emerging markets/powers with lot of talent but in few years we might see smaller African and other countries claiming the piece of the pie. It is just technological and capitalistic evolution.
I hardly shop at BestBuy or CircuitCity these days. BestBuy to me is lot of microsoftish. Bulk of my purchases come from Fry's and what I've seen is that Fry's is pretty good at carrying stuff that works in Linux. I recently bought Airlink101 wireless PCI card and got it to work with MadWIFI in 10 minutes...better that windows, where i had to install the gui frontend, drivers, reboot...reboot again.
How many versions of Linux 2.6 are there? According to that article, around 300. It is way, way too complicated for regular people.
Well...I must say you are not quite keeping up. Linux 2.6??? That is not distribution...it is a kernel. LINUX IS A KERNEL...Most distros are based on Linux kernel (2.4 series or 2.6 series) and GNU GPLed software. The correct name is GNU/Linux. As far as 300 distros are concerned...I've used about 8 (most of the major ones) and I'm quite content with what I've used and see no need to use specialized distros. With that said, what is wrong with having choices...most average users are going to go with user-friendly distros namely ubuntu, suse, redhat, fedora, mepis, mandriva etc. These distro are complete and work-out-of-the-box.
On other note, Linux users/geeks are not sitting on a high horse. If you happen to visit many linux help forums on the net. You would experience that linux forums are the most user friendly.
Microsoft should rather program windows and let the customer worry about how they want their dvd's. Apart from utter digust I have for this, it makes me think, have they thought what a tremendous impact that could be on environment when we come to disposing off those discs???
If we turn even the slightest control over to these people, it's a surefire guarantee that they will abuse it. They would use the technology to further oppress their people (illegally, I might add) and attempt to extend their influence to elsewhere in the world.
Isn't that what some of the western countries do too...albeit in a very suave way...under wrong pretense and spreading FUD. Most of the news I watch in US is some or the other way biased because they are owned by corporations favoring specific political entities.
May be the paradigm has changed lately...I thought "If you control mail, you control information". But chinese government has taken it to the next level, "If you control internet, you control everything (information, dissent, negative views and freedom)".
societies are like compressed springs. The more government tries to compress that spring, the greater the chance of it bouncing back and giving a nasty surprise. History has ample examples on this.
You are comparing car industry to software industry. Cars are not suppose to interoperate or lets put it other way, you cannot drive a Chrysler and Toyota at one time...however you can use Linux and run microsoft products within it. "Accept Linux" means acknowledge the fact that Linux is a viable alternative to your (MS) products and stop the subversive software practices that MS is famous for. Coming back to your Chrysler-Toyota example, Toyota and Chrysler both implicitely accept that they are competitors and they both try to make good products...it is just that they don't interoperate due to the nature of industry they are in.
What about things like Damn Small Linux, Linux On A Floppy, Polish Linux Distribution and all those non-commercial Linux distros? If I made a Tiny Linux Router distro for my own firewall, and make it available on my FTP, do I have to rename it, or shell out $200 to continue using the name? If you **read carefully** the link of linux kernel mailing list presented above. All Linus is saying is that it is your choice not to pay for the "Linux" name in your product **BUT** if someone else pays for the trademark sub-license and wishes to use your name...you don't stand a chance.
Well, Here's my take on your take... The computer is only as good as the user sitting in front of it. It is not important what your computer can do for you but what you can do with your computer. Windows has long had a philosophy of "making things easier" which really makes a user dumb. I use Linux at home and windows at work and let me tell you this, when people come and see my windows desktop (without icons) they freak out. Well they are just icons but windows users won't understand that. Since most windows users are required not to use their brain...they would obviously find Linux (or Unix) hard since...your computer is only as smart as you are.
And by the way, Linux is not for everybody and no linux distros claims it is for everybody...such claims are windows' forte.
Does anyone know why Safari passes, but no other browsers?/ 1336223&tid=121&tid=106this story.
Konquerer does with KDE 3.5 released today. Check out http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/29
