  1. Mumbo Pocus on Frank Zappa's Influence On Linux and FOSS Development · · Score: 1

What a load of complete bollocks. Mumbo Pocus, you might say.

  2. Ultima IV on The Unsung Heroes of PC Gaming History · · Score: 1

Ultima IV tops any list for me.

  3. Apple TV on Low-Power Home Linux Server? · · Score: 1

Like a lot of people, I've hacked an Apple TV to give me SSH/SFTP. You can upgrade the HD, install quite a bit. I run Boxee on it and it is a very flexible media server. Check out http://www.appletvhacks.net/ for info on what you can do with it. Max power draw is 48 watts.

  4. BMI is garbage on Charging the Unhealthy More For Insurance · · Score: 1

BMI is garbage- it simply puts height against weight.
I'm a body builder, only about 12% body fat but according to my BMI I am obsese- some hardcore lifters would be considered morbidly obese.
It was developed in the 1800's by a Belgian scientist and does not take into account body composition, body fat percentage or overall health.

If I was subject to this ruling I would be making a hell of a lot of noise- you can't punish a healthy body builder simply because a number based on 19th century mathematics is applied to him (or her) that has no basis on overall health.

  5. Are you guys crazy? on Apple's Macworld Looking To Corporate Users · · Score: 1

    1. Macs do run XP now. 2. You can run most apps via virtualisation. 3. A Mac Mini is $599- who knows what kinda discount a corporation would get for buying 3000 of them. 4. We DO NOT know what is coming at Macworld. Maybe wait and see huh?

  6. Re:Would you like fries with that? on Ex-AppleCare Employee Describes Life Inside Apple · · Score: 1

Agreed- I did IT for a couple of years to build up my recording studio. What does a 25 year old with an undergrad degree in Literature and a sound knowledge of music do in IT? Well, network support of course. I did it for five years- hated the last two, then left an opened a business. A lot of former colleagues are still there, still hating it. I work twice as hard, make half the money and enjoy myself a hell of a lot more. It really is a McJob and now thanks to the economy and offshoring, there is no money in it for many. Best left well alone.

  7. Doesn't look like it is going to happen... on Futurama Returns · · Score: 1
  8. the long road on How to Do What You Love · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can only speak from personal experience but I worked a dull IT job for about 5 years in order to build up my recording studio to be able to compete with other pro studios.
I went through a lot of depression because of it- losing sight of the end and getting lost from time to time.
Now 18 months after leaving IT I am starting to make a profit.
It has been quite difficult- but by focussing on what is necessary I've been able to do it and do it alone.

If I hadn't thought big and been pigheadeda bout it then I would never have gotten this far.
Everyone else I played in bands with has gone on to a normal job and stayed there, but quite a few wish they had my life.
I think it is a balance between wanting it, working at it and keeping in mind that you may fail but the important thing is to keep going and not give up.
To falter from time to time is ok, to give up is not.

My response to people who think that you can't get what you want is to say that you gave up too quickly.
Try again. You have nothing to lose whatsoever.

  9. Ihave both .mac and 3rd party hosting on Should Apple make .Mac free? · · Score: 1

I am a freelance musician/producer and have both a .mac account and 3rd party hosting for a couple of websites I run.
I find .mac pretty important to the way I work.

I love being able to log onto any mac in the world (that is connected to broadband) and be able to download my entire mail folders, sent items etc as well as internet shortcuts, website keychains and such.
It makes a huge difference to me when I travel.

Totally worth 100 a year to me as it is a minimum amount of messing about.

  10. Re:this is hardly 'new' on An Experiment in A New Kind of Music · · Score: 1

you have to understand that 4'33 came from an experience Cage had in an Anechoic Chamber, where he reportedly heard two sounds- one high and one low. The high was attributed to brain wave activity, the low I believe to blood/heart activity. There is a hell of lot more in Cage's catalogue than just 4'33 though. I invite you to investigate. If you don't appreciate this level of msuic discovery then cool- but Cage is a genius of the first order, IMHO. His impact on music in the 20th century will be felt for a long time. I dare say that he influenced musicians you like, or more likely perhaps the musicians you like we influenced by musicians who were influenced by Cage. Many of mine are, as am I. However, Wolframtones pretty lame. It is basically a Casio keyboard without the keyboard, I'll be sticking with CSound and Max MSP and Reaktor myself. James.

  11. One size fits all... AGAIN! on BBC Opens TV Archive to Remixers · · Score: 1

Typical. We have a house in London, pay a TV license (because we have a TV there, although it is never watched), but we spend an awful lot of time living in Switzerland. Because right now I am in Switzerland I cannot download content. Oh well, at least I am getting better weather. oct.

  13. I discussed this with a colleague a while ago on Laptops, Headless Servers and KVMs? · · Score: 1

I own a mobile recording studio- that currently cuns on a G5 desktop. I dont want to use a powerbook as they are not fast enough for what I do. The idea I had was similar to the original poster- essentially using the VGA output on a laptop as an INPUT the way a VGA monitor would accept VGA. Same with the trackpad/keyboard. The idea we had was to get an old laptop- like a DELL CPX and put the guts out of it- and find some way of pulling the circuitry out of an old monitor to convert the signal- but honestly I dont have enough technical knowledge to do the job (I am a musician, not an electronics engineer.) The idea behind this is to have a very portable video/trackpad/keyboard solution for the audio rig that I can cart around. A traditional LCD monitor, mouse and keyboard are too cumbersome and fragile. Anyone with any ideas how to do this, please let me know. :-)
