We're seeing more of these recently. YouTube setup students that perform some sort of civil disobedience then they ratchet it up until it warrants an arrest. They are ready for the taser by screaming before hand and then they escalate the screaming throughout. There was a time when this punk would have been knife sticked to death. But instead of counting his lucky stars that he wasn't he'll probably become a professional activist.:-/
This is far from a test of intelligence people need to stop reading that into it. "They were instructed to tap a keyboard when an M appeared on a computer monitor and to refrain from tapping when they saw a W." So extreme liberals follow orders and are more naive than extreme conservatives. Extreme conservatives are more stubborn and traditional extreme liberals. Remember they are not testing moderates or even libertarian groups here, these are more dyed in the wool straight ticket people. The people who are interpreting only one side of this study are really showing their own level of intelligence.
Furthermore this study tell us nothing we didn't already know and works more at polarizing this country more than it does bringing any common sense to the world. Your tax dollars at work.
I don't get the right-wing references. Bill Gates is an avowed Athiest and a moderate liberal. Have you not seen him speak at the AIDs events with Bill Clinton? This is just supply & demand people, there is a small but sizable niche of people out there who would use this sort of information and they are just looking to supply it before someone else. I don't have a political issue with that. Now as for patenting it...
It's one thing to pay for placement of your products, it's another to pay for the displacement of your competition which is exactly what happened. This is or should be considered an anti-competitive practice. It discourages competition in the market and ignores consumer choice
This is just delaying HD DVDs inevitable death. Part of me thinks this money was funneled through Toshiba, as we know Microsoft likes to brag that they are sitting on $50 billion dollars. This would be like buying a candybar to them. Given the head start that Microsoft and HD DVD had and that it is cheaper in cost, it is a huge deal that Bluray is beating them already, not only that but PS3 systems are projected to outsell XBOX 360s for the month of July.
I don't know how this isn't illegal, but I'm not a lawyer. It just stinks.
NASA endorsed and approved. What more is there to say about a drug than the fact it has been taken on NASA space missions with no complications. In all seriousness, while inappropriate if it's not the pilot I'm not sure it matters a whole lot because I didn't think they had to do a lot to get into orbit, it's mostly on the pilot if something goes wrong.
These are well intentioned devices however it will probably live the same fate as the taser. Now poorly trained police officers get these devices and use them excessively because they are deemed safe. Every device like this from tasers & beanbags to rubber bullets are intended to lower casualties.
Hopefully this will prevent more border agents from being arrested & prosecuted. That is a difficult job I wouldn't want.
Most of the research in the past was funded, I believe, to prove the opposite. Take the Parkinsons & Alzeimers results, the scientists actually tested it several different times because they got results that they didn't expect.
Lesson learned? To be a scientist you have to truly keep your minds open and not get your talking points from anywhere. Secondly let the data talk for itself.
Finally, stop blaming everything on 'Big Tobacco' or 'Big Oil', this song and dance is getting old.
Why should we expect the socialist Canadian government to even consider giving excess taxes back to taxpayers? After all they don't even recognize the fact that it's still the citizens money once they get it, not the government's money.
Until we get our collective heads out of our asses when it comes to taxing 'somebody else' then this trend will only continue. Eventually every product will have both sales taxes + an additional excise tax. Remember most Canadians pay about 15+% in sales tax plus additional excise taxes.
Ohhh Cannnnaadaa!!!
SCOTUS has ruled that synthetic digital forms of [fill in the blank] cannot be banned when they ruled on this a couple of years ago.
To be fair, Germany and most of Europe would also come down on synthetic digital forms of racial hate, etc. So lets keep this in context, I don't see Slashdotters defending synthetic digital forms of hate (just use your imagination).
Bottom line is if you are the sick pervert getting your kicks off of naked kids in any form you need to taken away from the rest of society (i.e. locked up, chained up, rubber room, etc).
Wait until we see abuses of these laws where we see them being abused before we cry wolf.
It will remind everyone that Internet has a worse enemy than Republicans. The elephants are pretty hands off with the Internet, while the nannie party, well their gearing up to protect everyones children now.
In America not one person had died from MAD cow disease, this will likely only lead to more laziness so we can all have cheaper food.
On another note, I guess the lactating men from Europe can eat beef again?
This is a common theme that I've heard now from this guy all the way to Linux Journal. People complaining about things that they aren't certain about and have ignorance to. How about the nice Bit Torrent technology or productivity software that comes standard with most Linux distros?
Oh no wait, these people are too busy complaining about what's not 'like' Windows. Screw Windows, you never beat a Behemoth like Microsoft or Wal-Mart by being like them. You have to shoot ahead of them as many of the projects already mentioned are doing.
Computability & interoperability are one things, mimicking is another. We all as part of the community should just take this as an incentive to document (wikis) and publicize things even more to counter ignorance such as this.
I don't understand how you could measure it through the fiber optic cable. All instruments that you use operate at the speed of light, therefore if it ran faster then the spead of light couldn't it be missed in the middle anyway? I'm sure these geniuses are smarter than I, just trying to understand how they could measure it.
Obviously American's have nothing to prove, Microsoft and Google represent examples. Many European countries can say the same with many novel concepts coming out of there. This contest does underline a few challenges we face working with many businesses in America.
The climate at this time is very fast paced with little to no emphasis on the science behind it all. Some revolutions in programming and architecture recently has produced SOA and other concepts, but these are mostly encapsulating existing architectures & technologies.
Fact is most companies care little about producing good software let alone good code. This being the emphasis shows in our programmers. While there's a good amount ofvery excellent programmers in the US, there's a helluva lot more bad bad programmers in my experience...
If you're oil company XYZ, what do you care about software, so long as we're punching holes in the Earth's surface somewhere and pumping gas, it doesn't really matter to them..:-/
If anyone hasn't read the Google interview in Linux Format (Chris DiBona) I highly recommend it. It really does a good job of conveying Google's position on many issues. Regardless I can't see how most people on this forum would consider Google <= M$.
In a nutshell:
LXF: In what ways would you say that Google is sponsoring open source?
CD: Actually I don't like the word 'sponsoring'. I don't like sponsoring, I don't like 'subsidising', I don't like 'giving back'. The words I like are 'working with' them. We see them as our peers in computer science...
Maybe you don't believe this is 100% true, you can at least agree that Microsoft's position are opposite of this. Not only they not our peers in computer science, but they seem arrogant enough to think they can dictate computer science.
Around the world freedom of speech, though and expression is under attack. People must respect the opinions & expressions of others even when it's WRONG. I could care less what White Supremists think, but I'd rather know who the crazies are rather then having them bottle it up inside. Take Germany for example, still there is Nazi sympathizers even though it's illegal to deny the holocost, etc.
Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's a FACT, or it's RIGHT. More times than not, it means the opposite.
The problem is that Dan Brown states that the controversial parts of the plot (if you've read it you know what I'm talking about) are truth. This is why History Channel as well as others have done this analysis. Try writing a simliar book about Islam and then watch the fireworks. As Christians I feel we need to fire back more often against this stuff, the truth is important.
The real question is why this thread was even posted on SlashDot:-/
The Da Vinci Code was a disgrace, every factual analysis done on the theories presented showed NO FACTUAL BASIS!!!. This includes the History Channel and one of the major networks (I believe CBS). The book is just AntiCathoilic rhetoric.
I've used Reader Rabbit & JumpStart with my kids and the've enjoyed both series. Does anybody have any favorite open source children games or educational software that they would recommend?

When other large vendors like IBM & HP support Linux out of the box. Especially for servers, the equipment that Dell puts together is second rate.

We should turn off all energy plants, stop burning fossil fuels then find a cave or tree to cling on to and eat bark for the rest of our lives. :-|
