This leaves the impression that they haven't even worked out what this manual charging method will be, and might be leaving it for future editions of the OLPC.
If they standardise the power connector (hopefully one that's simple and in common use already) at this stage then the power supply can be retrofitted after. You could have a choice among external units (hand crank, foot treadle, bike dynamo, conventional transformer/rectifier) or people could even invent their own according to local needs & conditions.
First you write the software (1 - 2 years). Then you take it to the customers and they test (6 months). Next you fix any issues they have with the software, generally it is a re-architecture (1 year).
What the heck are you writing, the sequel to Duke Nukem Forever?
I need insurance to walk down the street? Why? What am I doing that can injure myself? Seems to me the people doing things that could injure me are the ones who should have the insurance? Why should a pedestrian have vehicle collision insurance?
I don't believe anyone can put in 100 hours on an ongoing basis without becoming so tired that it gets counterproductive. In short bursts - project go-live time and things like that, maybe. Do it every week and you'll be spending half your time fixing mistakes and the other half making new ones.
Whose insurance? If I'm walking down the street and some dozy cowboy builder drops a brick on my head, he'd better have insurance, or the homeowner should - or sure as hell I'll make sure he doesn't own that home anymore. Because I shouldn't need insurance to stroll down the street and buy a loaf of bread.
Likewise, if someone's in the business of making laptops or components of them, they should do it properly or take it on the chin. Call it a cost of doing business. Frivolous litigation is one thing (50 million dollar pants, anyone?) - but it's not this thing.
Defamation laws don't exist solely to prevent lies.
Then they clearly didn't make a good job of writing them - that bit about truth being an absolute defence would defeat the object somewhat, wouldn't it?
They also exist to prevent schoolyard bully style "Hey everyone, did you know that hes a [blank]? It's true... you shouldn't have anything to do with him." tactics from being used to hurt people.
Really? I've read the libel laws, English and US and I never saw anything where it says "you mustn't be a horrid meanie because it's mean and horrid". I'm sure you'll provide a link/cite to enlighten us.

I'd say parents response is nether troll nor flamebait, but true and informative.
What you say is very sensible. The people visting presumably have more interesting things to tell her (work, school, sports, whatever) than she has to tell them (stayed in bed all day, had some crappy food - maybe none - and some pills).
Come on, you're oversimplifying. He also says slower growing companies grow more slowly. It's that little bit of extra insight that makes the difference between ending up as CTO instead of a janitor in the modern corporate world.
As a student, let me say: tl;dr
The +1 is 'funny' which doesn't affect karma. The -1 is 'overrated' which does affect karma and can't be metamoderated.
That sounds like good design practice to me.
His point would appear to be "Waaaaagh! It's not FAIR!".

No it isn't - he's off by 1000 years!

For those who get their modpoints bundled with their new facebook subscription, parent is a troll - and an old one at that.

Think back to the ealy 80s. Scientology : Catholicism = Microsoft : IBM.
The bead-jigglers have a 2000 year head start - the Scientologists aren't doing bad for a startup!
Looks like someone just invented antisocial networking.
