It is good to reward the team that develope a key aspect of your product.
When all the other smart guys could not write code to do the job a friend of mine had a stroke of insight and wrote the entire code in day by himself (only a few thousand lines of code). They had been trying to develope the code for nearly a year. In this case it can be said he is truely the sole developer. In many cases it is a small team of 5-10 individuals.
They company promptly sold the code for $7 million later that year. His bonus was take your wife out and the company will cover the check. A good way to promote smart people to work harder. The smart people are smart enough to know when they have been insulted and leave. All you are left with is stupid people.
I am sure the senior executes recieved a much better bonus.
Needless to say if they would have rewarded him with say $70 000 he would have been happy and continued to work hard for years. At his current job the code he writes generates about $15-20 million a year in sales (but he is part of a small team of developers 50 individuals and equally as many sales staff). He is currenlty well paid and gets extra paid time off after each project (I think last year he had about 4 months off - partly because the team he works on got the project done 2 month ahead of schedule). He has no plans of looking for a job anywhere else.
Lesson learned: treat your employees fairly and they will stick around. Treat your smart employees with respect and they will never leave.
It all depends on the sound to noise ratio. A cheap ass wire may sound good if you are only going two feet. In a house the wire may travel 100 feet or more. This is when you will hear the static or hiss in the speakers.
I have sampled different wires. Running from my audio console to the other side of my house (~150 feet of cable). The cheap speaker wire make the speakers sound like crap. I then replace it with QED Qunex Interconnect wires. It make the world of difference. The interace noise was absolutely gone.
Maybe you like to listen to AM radio and like the static but I prefer the better sound qauilty of FM or CD. That is what using the right wires for the job can do for you.
I have a multi-room sound system. It is broken down into 6 zones with 6 sources. Each Zone could select one of the sources. This is run by a Nevo home audio system. Behind this I am running a digital audio juke box with a CD player/writter.
The interface is via a typical TV, touch senstive LCD, PC, or wireless palm or pocket PC. In each zone you can select one of the 6 sources. The sources can be manipulated by turning the TV to the correct channel for the source or by a locally run web-style interface for the digital juke box. I have set up the TVs in the house to accept a wireless broad cast from the digital juke box and provide feed back to change tracks, source, etc.
I can also drop in a CD into the system and make it one of the zones. I have also altered one of the Zone to play the audio off a selected TV station (Great for listening to the game outside). As I have a CD player/burner on the system you can select auido tracks from the 120 Gigiabyte server to burn a CD. Great for when you want to take tunes on the road or share with a friend (legeal for me to do in Canada).
I have at least 100 watts to each zone - my office has 500 watts. I also have high quaily speaker wire (QED Qunex). Running all 6 zones on 6 digital source all at once is not a problem. The all weather outdoors speakers can be clearly heard from a 1/2 block way - the people next door love me.
The Nevo audio system also comes in a 12 source 12 zone version but it just one part of the interface. You will need a digital Juke box (either created yourself or purchased for big bucks). Most digital juke boxes are just a application specific PC. I am sure if you are reading Slashdot you could us a PC with 6 audio cards and create nice wireless inferface (via a intranet browser). To continue with the wireless aspect you could hook the up wireless speakers to the 6 sources of the PC hence by passing a nevo audio system.
I will warn you that wireless speakers sound like crap. Spend some money and lay down some good audio wires in your home before they drywall or insulate it.
Just because a tech is around does not mean it will be used.
The transistor really started to change the world when NASA needed computer power in space. Sending Vaccum tubs into space was unrealiable and used too much heat.
Once the world sees how you can use a new tech they will adopt it.
It not only can be seen in this field as well as tons of other - stuff invented but fails to used it to the full potential.
More money than ever is being spent in R&D and all it takes is one person in the right position and a little insight with lots of luck to make impressive break throughs - especially the case when you are looking for it.
I was at an Anime showing conference where they had a showing of a newly unauthorized translated show. At the end of the showing the presented introduced an executive from the company that made/released the show. The presenter indicated he was there so they could negotiate the rights to translate the show we just saw into English.
After a couple of years I saw the English version of that very same show appear on the shelves of the local video store. Since I was so impressed with the first English version I saw a few years before I snapped it up. Sadly the translation was perverted by the executives' involvement. The original translation I saw done by the fans was a much better interpretation of the dialogue.
I think that some fans are so fanatical they do a way better job then a company employed translator. For example look at some assembly manual that have been translated from another language into English. It is clear to tell that English is not the first language and the translation is not done with the passion a true fan can accomplish.
I agree that we are in a warming cycle/trend. But the industrialization of human kind has exaggerated the issue.
The warming cycle will just be worse that what it should have been with out human interface. The issue is that no knows how much worse or the ultimate consequences to mankind. Most importantly is how will it affect those country that have nuclear weapons?
If it the exactly the same job then after 40 hours you make not care anymore and you produce less.
I worked 3 jobs (two at 40 hours week and the other ~20-30 hours a week). I did this for four months in the summer to earn money for school. Each paid well and this allowed me not to work a single hour during the school year and still have more spare cash then my working friends. I was tracked on productivity on one of the jobs. I can tell you even on less then 7 hours a sleep for weeks on end I had a productivity level about 10% hirer then the company average and my error rates where always very low (in the bottom 10 for the company). My personnel best is 47 days in a row with an average of ~15 hours a work every day (I had no life). I was allowed to skip the coffee break and take them at the end of my shift so I could leave early (to eat, sleep, etc).
It helps that each job I did was entirely different. One was entirely physical labor, one was a manager (paper work, handling cash, dealing with customers, etc), and the last was computer related.
The physical job was like a quick 8-10 hour work out every day (kept me in top shape for the ladies in the computer labs). The management job was easy, but I am good with numbers. And I love computer so it was like my hobby.
I am sure I would have died within a few days if I had to do just 100+ hours of hard physical work. If spend 100+ hours a week for weeks on end on doing just one job I would be up in the bell tower with my trusty sniper rifle pretty darn quick.
I could handle lots of work for 4 months at a time fairly easily but I am sure I could not handle it for year on end. My personnel life would not be. I would have money but I would not have a life.
So I say you could work 80 hours a week as long as you did significantly different jobs!
It is just another means of Social Control, maintaining order, watch nude sunbathers, etc.
The more you watch your Society the better you are at controlling them. Any growing dissidents can be spotted and pacified before it gets out of hand.
To an outsider it would seem the Government is a little paranoid but remember not long ago areas in China was control by war lords & organized crime (and lots of internal fighting in the vie for local power). Most of the aging leadership lived through the unification of China. Organized crime is still present in China a very real treat to local government. They must feel that the only way to maintain unity is to enforce it by any means at their disposal. Maybe they fear a radical General might break away from the hard line and try to seize power in some area of China.
If you study China's history you begin to see why this system of controls is acceptable to the ruling powers. It might not be the best way but the risk of trying something new might result a revolution that would kill millions.
Why spend all this money when you could effect all drivers at once - raise the gas tax!
That way if you drive a big H2 or SUV then you pay more tax per mile you drive.
If the truck drivers and movers of industry bitch then offer to send a 'rebate' check for all the receipts they summit on a yearly basic (that way the government gets the money and collects the interest while they hold it). This did not really work in Canada as it cost the highly efficient government bureaucrats more to process the receipts then they could collect in interest - so they kept the price the same and stopped offering rebates.
Hummm.
I thought Main and Portage in Winnnipeg, Canada was the coldest place on Earth.
I was just one block from Main and Portage last year when the temperature dropped to -48. Brrr that is cold when you walk 10 blocks with no hat, and a light winter jacket and dockers pants.
On the radio they claimed that was the coldest place on Earth that day. So why travel that far when you can get record cold temperature near home.
I bought my first VT100 with a nice monochrome display with a 300-baud modem for less than $50. I was able to dial up a variety of UNIX boxes and do lots of things. Ah the speed of 300 Baud - sure beat my old modem with a speed of 30 baud on regular computer with a process hungry OS.
About the only way to do get $100 PC would to use a modern day equivalent; a dummy terminal that boots and runs over a LAN/Dial-up. Your dummy terminal could even have a USB port to allow saving using those USB memory sticks that seem to drop in price every day. The dummy terminal could even be designed to boot and run off the USB memory stick! That would allow you to have your entire OS and your own programs on your memory stick (Although you would need the OS and you software to fit in one of these USB devices (Less than 256 Megs)). This would allow you to take your entire system with you when you leave the dummy terminal - instant security! The dummy terminal would just provide a connection to the Internet and means to enter and view data. Would work great for Cyber Cafe - regular users could have there own USB key (stick). You then could just ghost a new image onto the stick after it was returned - no worries about someone else viewing pages you visited and just about no risk of viruses. You could surf at your cyber cafe knowing that you could take the system's entire memory with you in your pocket after your done.
I found the best way to win at poker was to cheat.
While learning poker I learned the slight of hand skill. This allowed me to pretty much deal myself a winning hand almost all the time. Works great at impressing your friends. Too bad most casinos around have a designated dealer.
Luck is just to unpredictable to trust. Cheating, done correct, always pays off (for example the MIT Black Jack team).
They should have cleaned the data and removed the SSN.
When we pass information outside the company we remove any reference to the SSN and replace it with a zero padded sequence to the same length as the SSN. If they ever need to know who the individual is they can give us this sequence number and we can look them up.
Our plans are to remove any possible reference to the SSN in the database and replace them with a good old fashion sequence number (IE Customer number). Only payroll will have a table that links the sequence number to the SSN (a must when filing taxes).
True.
But is the company is from Ding Dong Village in some small dink hole country?
The US governement may try to control the world's OIL but they can not control millions of small companies that would gladely pay for someone to flood the internet world with new news about their product.
No to stop it you just need a court system to ask why you need millions of dollars.
Make the individual asking for the million explain why such money is needed. Refering to at least 3 or 5 places with a quote.
Then have the court add on administration fee and then as they individual required the money to pay for doctors and such the court would directly pay the money out. The same could be done for cases that are settled. The money is ment to go towards something specific (related to damage done by the overly hot cup of coffee).
Most of these people ask for millions and then settle for far less. They are obviously in it for the money. Remove the aspect of them actually seeing the money and you would need cases where people actually do need the money to pay for doctors and such.
The one exception to the case would be to ask the court to punished the company as they knew about the issue and did nothing. The punishment for company is in dollar amounts but instead of going entirely to the one claimaint the fine should be split among all individuals who suffered.
Instead of me sueing the pencil manufactor for a splinter in my finger I would ask the court to collect money from the company to pay for the actuall cost related to the splinter in my finger (Doctor bills, lost time at work, other items that I could prove where was a cost to). Now if the pencil manufactor made pencils that caused splinter and did this becuase it saved them two cents. Then the court could fine them for knowingly making an unsafe item and to continue selling it. The Extra fine would go toward all individuals who got a spinter from the pencils.
I think most companies would not mind paying millions of dollars if they knew it actually going to be used to pay for treatment. They fight hard in court with costly lawyer because they know you do not really need millions of dollars to fix a splinter from a pencil.
The lawyers have set up that both sides fight and they are the arms dealers selling to both sides and making a killing.
Yes.
You see every family member will fight over the rights after his death. The laywer will take all the money. Now who ever wins the cases will want to make more money so they will release it in varying forms and maybe with their own twists. Or the worst will be the lawyers owning it.
I can sleep better when I try not to think of such things.
In Canada they spent the money long ago to build the infrastructure.
Back when the crown (government) owned companies where making hundreds of millions of dollars a year they spent money on the infrastructure just as a way to spend money. They needed to spend money on something - so they build the infrastructure up. That was before the internet even came onto the public stage. Now we have American company coming in wanted all the profit to pay there executives $100 million dollar bonus so they do no bail on the failing company.
In some ways it is nice to have governement controlled industry. As a mononply they can make tons of money (keeping the taxes low) and spend money on what appears to be silly things - like building up the infrastucture. Sure it takes time but the American (for profit only) companies would never spend a single cent on building up the quality of life just because they can.
That is the problem with for strictly for profit companies. They just suck the life out what ever they touch. With out giving back to the community and building it will eventually die and your market place along with it.
It is good to reward the team that develope a key aspect of your product.
