With all the free internet news sites why bother to pay. When our local paper went start the internet version they did for free for 3 month then started charging. I have a regular subscription to the paper but that did not entitle me to the on-line version. I had to pay an extra $5 a month for it. If I just wanted the on-line version I would have to pay $10 a month. My current subscription to the local paper is about $22 a month.
It really ticked me off the I am a paying subscriber and I would have to pay extra to view the same paper on-line.
I figure that if I pay for a regular subscription I should not have to pay extra just to view it on-line. Like most IT individuals I travel lots so it would have been nice to view the news paper on-line.
See any of the Canada.com on-line newpapers. Please complain to them! They do not listen to me.
Instead of going to Canada.com to get my local news I go to CBC or CTV sites. They have the exact same articales - but for free!
Lets see the war in Iraq costs about $350 Billion. Just so we can turn around and buy oil from Iraq and Iraq can make billions more.
$4.2 Million to learn about the universe itself?
Advanced learning and understanding verses war and destruction.... hummm. I guess if your stupid or being paid off you would go for the $350 Billion.
Mind you I think the US should have spent $350 billion on alternative energy research instead of spending all that money to stabilize a country to be dependant on.
Lets see M$ wanted a new OS based on 4 key pillars. They are down to one - security and reliability. I think the past record of MS will indicate how well the implment the security and reliability of Longhorn.
I would expect that SP1 or SP2 will be the version of Longhorn that will really start to use the four main pillars it was to be based upon. But by releaseing a sub-standard version off the start they will hurt their market share even more.
MS is in a position that it could hold off release for a year and make things right. The bad PR from introducting an marginal OS will hurt them. It would be best if they waited and released something that was actually ground breaking. I guess they had two choices - early release so that Linux or some other OS does not gain too much Market share or release late and try to regain the market share. I would tend to think they would get more market share if they actually released something that worked correctly the first time rahter than saying.... aaaaahhhh just wait for the patch.
I think control of VoIP is outside the mandate of the FCC.
New companies that offer VoIP are not covered by the FCC. These are companyies are "common carriers" and protected by there laws.
You either have FCC regulation and the protection of the "common carriers" laws or your on your own. For example is you are VoIP company and not considered a "common carrier" then If someone uses VoIP for criminal reasons you could be considered part of the facilitator. Common Carrier status protects a carrier from legal liability for what it transports.
The legal liability of allowing someone who is 'legal liability' for what it transports to use your lines from which you are protected via the common carrier status has interesting consequences. For example: if a 3rd party VoIP provider (who is not regulated and is not Common Carrier) allows a kidnapper to make a ransom demand to through its VoIP line then over a common carrier lines then who is responsible?
Just becuase a company is protected by the Common Carrier status does not mean it should extend to the 3rd party VoIP provider who use there lines.
An very interesting legal point if the FCC is trying to make the Common Carriers accept 3rd party VoIP calls.
Allowing 3rd party VoIP providers to use Common Carrier lines puts unacceptable risk or damage upon the Common Carrier and hence they should be legally allowed refuse service to such parties.
Audit all data requests (database & file requests and the # of E-mail). As a policy we automaticly audit all data requests. With a bit of analytical tweaking you can clearly see when someone all of a sudden starts to request more data than normal. This raises the warning flags.
I have seen cases where they waited until the employee went home for the night and they 'raided' there computer and desk. The employee was never allowed back into the building (employees where told never to make contact and to keep 100 yards from them at all times). Rumor abound about what they found but it seemed he was already working for another company and was just collecting data for interest.
With out the Audits and noticalbe increase of data requests and file transfers it would have been pretty hard to suspect them until they walked out the door to there new job with all our hard work.
Another employee was let go in a similar manner - he was a system admin. He thought he could cover his tracks but apprently there is even Audits of the Audit logs that only a few trusted managers even know about and watch.
I have the Media center Computer running the the Windoows XP Media center Edition and a media Ranger extender.
I must say it is very impressive. I have said it before and i will say it again.... I am sure this is just a test bed for a specialized DVR box from Microsoft (or to combine it with the XBOX).
It is mainly kids and the executives that buy the ring tones.
I find kids who have their bill paid for by mommy and daddy try the various ring tones. After all it does not cost them any to get that new kewl ring tone.
I was working next to a partner of the company when he got his new cell phone - he procced to download every possible ring tone and give it a try so he could select the one he would like. I am sure he must have rang up $600+ on trying to find the right ring tone.
I can only imagine what the company would say if I rang up a bill like that to just get find a ring tone.
This way when even a floater or popup add was called it was directed back to my computer to look for the file to load.
Worked extermly well. Blocked all Ad related cookies as well.
The one issue is that it took some extra time to load and process the 1 meg HOST file. After the intial load MS Internet Explorer worked normally. I would not mind testing it out on a really fast computer and see how it works. A site that would automaticly update a new HOST file with the known ads would be a perfect aid.
If iDownload products are cause you to get extra pop up adds you have the right to tell them to cease and desist.
After the more pop up ads you get the more it costs your ISP to transfer those bytes and is reflected in the cost you pay to get your internet connection.
Just have a class action lawsuit for all the slashdot members against iDownloads for increasing their internet fees. Or if really want to tick them off have every Slashdot member sue them in civil court for a small amount. Just like a server the company would go up in flames with the legal cost associated with handling each case.
The Govenment really needs to get on board and start defining what spyware is and then out law it.
The French where once the most powerful nation in the world (or aleast they thought or still think so). It went a little bit to their heads and they still feel like they are the center of the universe.
The Egos of country does not decrease at the same rate as their world influence.
The same will happen the United States. Right now the Americans have a Big Ego. Everything has to be their way because they think it is the most correct. In a 100 years when their economy is in the toilet and India or China is center stage the Americans will still have a big ego and will be bitching about same things the French are now. It happen to all nations and when they fall it can be particularly sad how they act. the French are complaining about now.

I have computer running Window Media Center 2005. I have programmed in all the show I like and indicated to record only new showings etc. I can leave town for a week or a month and know the shows I care about are recorded. Combined with the media range extender I can watch the play back on my 57 inch TV downstairs.
What did I pay for this... a fair amount (at least twice the price of a TIVO - which is illegal in Canada). But considering it is also a computer (despite running windows), and I have no subscription fee to pay to get the TV schedule, and I can burn shows off to DVD, and I can upgrade my hard ware any time.
My ultimate choice would be a stand alone device. That would have:
- Standard outputs
- Able to load the schedule via the internet
(via wired-Ethernet or wireless-Ethernet - 801.2 b/g)
- Provide a nice interface
- A very large hard drive with the ability to replace/upgrade later on.
- A DVD/CD burner to record directly to DVDs or to burn/achieve recorded shows.
- A built in battery (in case the power fails it could safely shut down or finish recording the program).
- No maitaince fee for the TV scheule or a one time fee for the product (one time subscription fee included in the base price).
- Able to have limited internet access (play internet radio, load firmware upgrades).
- A big bonus would be able to wirelessly access and transmit content from the device to other locations in the house (most like via remote access points).
- Another big bonus would be able to record two programs at once.
- Allow cable passthough
- Allow picture in picture (or side by side pictures. I love being able to watch two football games at the same time on one TV).
- Typical VCR controls when watching LIVE TV.
- A nice sleek looking box.
For a product like that all nicely intergrated into one sleek looking box with a remote I would definetly pay for.
It seems to me that it will get there. All of it is possible with off the shelf part right now but to full integrate it into one sleep box always takes time. The Company's will produce half ass stuff for years and make slight upgrades to continue to selling their junk. Or they will offer something so far above what a typical person needs and charge an arm and a leg for it (but when it fails to sell they say their is no market and refuse to sell a cheaper model that did not offer the useless costly features).
It will take a company like TIVO to really listen to what customers want. Bigger companies all ways seem to like tell the customers what they need/like.
Maybe TIVO needs change their business model so they just sell the hardware to the Cable Companies and maintina the TV scheduling aspect.
Ah... Maybe someday a company will achieve what I can do with desk top computer and some software/hardware.
I always looked at the cost per page for Black and white and the cost per page for color.
I did own a HP until the price for the ink was was more than the printer.
I bought a Cannon S600. From the research I could find on the cost per page it was the the best. It also has good enough quality for things I do at home.
When I went to purchase a photo printer I looked first at Cannon. The simple fact is that I could reload all the color and black cartiages on the S600 for ~$35 impressed me so much that never even wanted to consider another product.
Now I have 9 cartiages to change but at I can get all the cartiages at once for about $75 if I catch the sale on the package set for the printer.
The point is why spend more on cartiages then you do the printer? It tells me the real value they put on the printers.
I travel to Korea a few years back. The average person on the street believed the North already had Nuclear weapons and would have no problems using them. The only fear the North has was what the US would do as pay back. Even if the population dies the North Korean Government wants to stay in power.
The Country is suffering and starving. The millitary is in charge and get feed first. They are using the threat of nuclear weapons as means to get food for the people.
My worry is they they will attempt a blitz into South Korea to snag as much food/resources as possible and then quickly retreat back. Using the threat of nuclear weapons to stop any real retaliation occuring.
With each passing year they feel they are being are backed into a coner and the only weapon they really have to get out is nuclear.
Will it still be burning by the time it gets a new galaxy?
It is star that is expected to go nova or turn into a brown/white dwarf? I wonder what will happend to the star when is not longer confined a Galaxy. Will the lack of other graviational bodies have an effect on its life/death?
They do not make show for the fun of it they make shows for Profit.
If it cost 80 million to make the season then ask for 85 million and use the extra 5 million to audit the costs and keep track of the millions of potential investors in the show.
In the long run the show should make money if it is good enough. So sell share in the show.
I would kick in $100 if I knew that would get the season started and I would eventually get my investment back over the sale of episodes through DVDs, syndication, etc.
Each fan would own a very small percentage of the show but if the show show is popular enough they will get their money back.

You think you will get to keep that downloaded copy?
You will 'rent' access to view it as many times as you like (as long as it under 5 times) for 30 days.
They will add broadcast flag and digital signatures to make sure do you copy it or try to view it with out paying for it.
Everyone will want there cut ever time you watch the 'Debbie does....' collection.

What the hell do you need a compiler for.
Just program you code directly in machine language and it will be as efficient as you can write it.
Or if you must use a compiler use FORTRAN or some other old language that has had the compiler crunched for effecieny.

You make is sound like you must upgrade the program version to at least 9.0.1.1000 or newer.
This is not the case. Rather the Program versions that are older than 9.0.1.1000 require the live update (newer scan engine and virus definition).
So if you have an older Program version just make sure you click live up date and get the newest scan engine.

Either put up or shut up idea.
My company supplies me with the cheapest simpliest cell phone they can find. It good enough what I use it for - a phone!
The company sees no need to buy a phone that can snap pictures, sprout into a flower, do the wash etc.
I do have a T3 as well but I use it read books while on the plane, play some games and keep track of important dates.
I understand that it would be nice to have everything in one unit but why should I expect the company I work for to pay for it.
Worked at Grocery distribution hub. After seeing how the food was handle I felt I could no longer buy from the stores they supplied.
Ignorance is bliss!
