Theo proved, yet again, that he is an ass clown.

That said, of COURSE it works to their [Google's] advantage that Firefox behaves in such a manner. However, that doesn't mean that the Mozilla Foundation isn't free to switch their default over to MSN if their user base overwhelmingly requests it.

So, if you're writing something that you DO want to ensure is free, base if off of GNU hello.c. :)

For something to float, it must displace an equal mass of whatever its floating in. By definition, the north polar ice cap is displacing exactly its own mass in water. If it were to melt, the displaced water would take exactly the same amount of volume as the submerged ice. This would cause the world's ocean levels to rise by the exact amount of zero plus the volume of several dozen annoyed polar bears.

Got a kick outta your post. However, there is an error in your logic--you're assuming that all of the ice is currently in the ocean. There's a VAST amount suspended above sea level. Melt this, and yes, oceans will rise.

SANS _is_ a non-profit. It does pay it's people (most of the handlers are volunteers--so don't be too big of a tool, please.) and it's speakers, and has a heck of a lot of infrastructure to support. All things that cost $$. They're not the only non-profit org that actually makes (and then uses) a fair amount of money. Take a look at the annual budget of the Red Cross!

    Back to your original message:

The first word that caught my attention was the word "handler".

I took a bit of issue with this statement. You have yet to back it up with anything useful. Do you even know any of the handlers? What does it matter to you re: their degree, and how is it even relavant to the topic?

$ans is all about cash. That is why their classes are packed to the brim, so people can watch powerpoint presentations...

    (yes I have attended one)

They're packed b'cause they're good. If you didn't get anything out of it, then perhaps there's something (someone) else at fault. Ahem.

Half of the SANS hardening guides were ripped straight from the US government (NSA/DISA STIGs). No credit given either btw.

No they weren't. Prove otherwise, or stop slandering a good organization of white hats.

The other tracks present far more information than is just included in the PPTs. SANS seems to use PPTs for just what they were designed for--as outlines to guide the discussion/presentation, not the full content.

The GIAC certifications are also one of the few cert programs that I think are worth pursuing. You have to prove a decent command of the material before you can complete the cert.

As for The Dave Aitel quote, what the hell? First off, who cares. It's not like most CS programs give a shit about packet analysis. That skill is usually home grown out of the interest/need of a specific individual. Regardless, I think most of the handlers do, in fact, have degrees, with a bunch more than just undergrad.

You should probably starting backing up that gig of gmail to local storage. This tragically coincides with two weeks of script kiddie attacks (which were scheduled to begin this past Sunday) aimed at disrupting the Republican national convention. In addition, many college students are back on campus this week, which provides the e-terrorists and i-subversives with a veritable candyland of insecure boxes on big pipes. Faced with this triple threat, our beloved Internet will surely fall.

The ISC would like to go out on a limb and predict that the Internet will not vaporize into a cloud of nothingness this Thursday, but if it does, it's been our pleasure to help stave off its inevitable annihilation this long.
