  1. Re:Its time for the daily 2 minutes hate of IDers on Using Copyrights To Fight Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

I think it's rare that Intelligent Designers are referred to as stupid. Intelligent Design is not good science, yet it's backers are constantly trying to push it into mainstream education. They have been told on numerous occasions that this is unnacceptable, yet they persist.

Are they stupid? No. Are they ignorant? No.

They've got an agenda is all. Evolution as a theory contradicts their view of the bible, so for self preservation they are attempting to discredit it. They seem to be doing a reasonably effective job at this in certain areas.

What most Slashdotters are angry about is using unscientific means to discredit science. Scientific theories are inherently fallible, with many holes that need filling by research and testing. ID theories are inherently unfallible where any discrepancy can be explained as intentional.

The general ill will Slashdotters hold towards Christianity is because of this, far too many Christians stay silent on this matter. A good many Christians have spoken out on this issue, but not enough. When moderates stay silent the voice of an organization becomes those shouting from the edges.

Although the main problem with the original GBA was the backlight, it was also very prone to getting marks or scratches on the screen. When the SP came out it cleverly removed this problem with the clamshell design.

The only real complaint with the SP was that the controls weren't as easily accessible as on the original. The shoulder buttons were very small and the thin square design wasn't the best for some hand sizes.

Now nintendo is releasing the micro, which keeps the form factor of the original GBA (more or less) but sidesteps the scratching issue with a better protective layer and most importantly removable faceplates.

Yes nintendo is a fan of releasing the same product over and over, but each iteration always has something new to offer and is rarely a step back. Nice to see the standard headphone jack return as well.

  9. Self Censorship on Video Game Industry to Sue Michigan's Governor · · Score: 1

There's a big problem with the games industry (or any media entity) having to police their own product. Instead of ensuring that risky materials are segregated from the fluff, they simply refuse to produce them. If the cost associated with pushing the envelope is too high, risk taking is discouraged.

When the MPAA for movies, the FCC for television or the Comic Book Code really started flexing their power it was always followed by a long period of bland (but unobjectionable) product.

This practice will be particularly pronounced in the games industry, where originality and innovation are already on the decline.

With more and more of the industry falling under larger conglomerates (E.A. anyone) the chances of maverick developers pushing the boundries of this self imposed censorship becomes smaller as well.

At best the device sent the page seconds before the guard on duty would notice and at worst it encourages the guards to perhaps not be as diligent as they should be. 12. There is no decline! on Piracy Not To Blame In Decline of Moviegoers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Last year's number are an abberration, mainly due to one film. The Passion of the Christ brought in people that typically do not go into movie theatres, it also brought in more repeat sales as some people felt compelled to watch it over and over again. This same phenomenon happened with the movie Titanic, with many people boasting they had seen it 5 times or more. If sales stay constant until years end the film industry is looking at one of it's highest grossing years of all time. The dirty little secret is that all those terrible movies we complain about (Stealth, Duece Bigalow) will make a substantial profit. Yes it is lower than last year but in the movie industry all it takes is one monster hit to change that. Not making that grand slam every year does not make it an decline.

The position that outsourcing is just good business and benefits the consumer may be true in the short term but has dire implications further down the road. By outsourcing these middle class jobs you are in effect removing the purchasing power of the former employees. The majority do find new jobs, but with lower salaries or with fewer benefits (forcing them to pay the cost). This is coupled with the fact that the US is importing more products than it exports. Which means that jobs that should involve Americans working to manufacture products for other Americans to purchase are becoming scarce as well. This leaves only the services industry which tends to pay bottom dollar salaries and provide few benefits (if any). My question is that what good are lower priced consumer goods if there is no middle class to purchase them and what economy can rely on a service based model if the service cannot be afforded?

One thing to consider is the fact that this was a survey, not an analysis of traffic. People typically have no problem telling a pollster they use iTunes, as it is seen as a legitimate vendor. Due to all the lawsuits and FUD being spread by the RIAA, people are much less likely to say that they use traditional P2P apps. I understand what the act is trying to accomplish and I don't think it was created with bad intentions. It is law now however, and because of it the potential for abuse exists, a study from the DOJ saying that everything is fine doesn't exactly comfort me.
