sounds a lot like my "unix in a nutshell" book -- which has all commands in reference format, a quick look at programs like vi (which is obviously the best editer), sed, awk, etc. and a look at a few different shells and scripting with them.
jesus christ. data != real material nor service. ok? ok.
i'm not stating that it doesn't have worth, but IT'S NOT THE SAME AS REAL MATERIAL , GOODS OR SERVICES. YES I AM YELLING.
also, i don't think it's breaking copyright to make a copy of a cd. breaking copyright, to me, is COPYING something as my own. that is, copying a cd and saying, "here, i wrote and recorded/produced/manufactured this".
note i say "manufacture". copying and reselling something as a profit, to me, is what piracy is.
i understand that apple can't release computers that are all things to all people, but i for one like to see higher performance in a smaller package. i.e. i'd love to see the features of the 17" in a 12" version. i like the portability of the 12", and don't feel the need to lug around a 17" powerbook -- if i want a big screen, i'll just plug it into the bazillion-inch lcd screen at home/office/studio.
once again, i appreciate the simplicity in their pricing/options. i'm pretty happy with my 12" powerbook, but FW800 and gigabit would be nice . . .
but it's well on the way to the solution. just design it so that every prisoner can act as the leader somehow -- distributed leadership if you will, all that's missing from the abovce solution is a way to beat the king if he decides to call the leader in n times first thing, eg.
that is, if the king called the leader in n times before he called in anyone else, the leader would never collect any tokens . . . someone else would have to become the leader.
how is it fundamentally different? the only thing different (that i can see) is that the counter adds k to n to be sure to have ruled out any meddling done by the king.
this is a good problem, btw, direct application to embedded system where all you might have is a single flip-flop . . .
a few details weren't clear. we get to choose the number t, how many times each prisoner is called in, but do we get to choose the number k?

you know, i was actually pretty impressed when i finally gave up win98 and booted winXP. "microsoft got it right," i thought.
this lasted until i got a dvd drive/burner. dvd functionality in winxp is null -- then i put os X on my mac and now the win XP box gathers dust while the other 3 os x machines are the ones that get used. the bundled apps with os x are very cool (without trying to "dominate" the market). (for an extra bonus, dig through the applications directory in the osx10.4 dev folder. some real gems in there.)
so yeah, i LIKE to us os x, while i use winXP when i HAVE to (usually when i'm cleaning malware off my friends computers).
maybe vista will "catch up", and perhaps even be better than os x, but to do that, it'll have to be an exceptional experience indeed.
tfa was a bit brief -- was the tarball infected, or was it the firefox binary? was it infected during the build?
this doesn't seem like a problem/vulnerability with firefox per se, but a problem with their particular download page -- someone posted an infected file -- oops!
i looked into it today, and although it has gprs and itunes, it's too expensive ($250), AND one must use cingular wireless w/a 2 year contract (cheapest plan @ $40/month).
i don't really need a cell phone, so i'm looking at a payasyougo plan, so this phone is a no go. and, itunes isn't really a big seller for me either.
overall, it does look like they did duct tape iTunes on top of a stock cell phone.
You know how many times I've edited the system registry since its inception? Less than 5. I really doubt that anyone *needs* to edit their registry ever.
The First thing I do to a new XP install is run regedit to turn of msmsg -- it's the only way to do it. (It's also a must if, er, when you get spyware running IE, luckily installing firefox is the second thing I do to a new XP install).
So, ok, I guess you don't have to run regedit if you don't mind msmsg always running . . .

here's the thing: it's a tricky situation because spammers (and spyware, viruses, etc) are not only annoying, but cost a lot in bandwidth (==$$), but there's no real way to deal with them.
that is, while i don't think two wrongs make a right, i think what lycos has done has proposed a very possible solution to a very serious problem.
if we were to dismiss an organized DOS as being "wrong", then what is the alternative? live with more and more spam, and just accept it?

the problem is, is that the raw materials are on a watch list -- you must be careful that you don't attract attention when gathering the materials, or THEY will know you're on to them . . . and will use the purchase to help track your movements. ..
oh yeah, when burying food and supplies underground (so that the satellites don't detect them, duh), you must wrap them in tinfoil as well. lead, of course, is better.

i did a photoblog in 2002 when i got my first digital camera, but lost most of the images because of a server crash. (i recently resurrected it on blogspot.com.) i had no idea it was such a trend. . .
it's obvious they don't want their trademarks (which have become known to be kid/family friendly) affiliated with porn sites. i think it's also obvious that this was found by a bot, and the email was a form letter. i think one could easily argue that SG is just as much a public forum as a "porn" site (if not more) quite effectively in court.
i wonder what Nintendo would think about a mention of one of their games in Playboy, eg.?
also, i like the, er, pun in the title.

am i the only one what sees a problem with the line of reasoning behind funding R&D because it will make someone $$?
i mean, i know it's crazy, but what about self-preservation of the species?

No, they want to sell you a $250 computer -- they can achieve this using x86 chips.
