I see your point -- but wouldn't the best solution be for a commercial distro to address the peripherial-problem? this way, the "core" of the OS could remain completely open and free -- great for server people, for example -- and the desktop "joe user" could just buy Linspire, whom have liscensed the 3rd party drivers and such.

Forgive me if this idea is naive, I'm not privy to the particulars of linux distro/liscensing.

  6. wikipedia bashing on When Wikipedia Fails · · Score: 1

here we go again with some wikipedia bashing.

i think wikipedia presupposes just a bit of critical thinking on part of the user. that is, looking up an article on a controversial subject or person (such as ken lay), one has to expect some editorial liscense. luckily, wikipedia is usually pretty quick to have a warning with a link to a discussion page, which often makes better reading than the article -- and this brings up an interesting point:

if i visit the ken lay page, eg, i do want some facts, but the facts aren't necessarily what is interesting -- i may read about his birthplace, childhood, and the fact that he was an executive at enron during the peak of its scandal. but this is where the facts will end, and this in itself is informative, but not about the ISSUE -- that is, and this is key, the going back and forth with posts (hopefully they'll be quarantined to the discussion page quickly) can clue the reader in to the issues and the opposing viewpoints on a subject.

i don't think that wikipedia fails, i think it's mainly that people expect it to behave like an old dusty book on a shelf, and that, thankfully, is just what it isn't -- it's alive with the issues of our contemporary world -- sometimes up to the minute.

i'll put it another way -- the fact that ken lay's page was "vandalized" is in of itself a barometer of the current climate on the subject.

i noticed a few people have responded with, "*yawn*, why would i do this when i already have a great connection" or "why would i expose myself to risk"? one thing to remember is that europe for the most part isn't as connected as the us -- and also isn't as paranoid.

i just returned from berlin (go deutschland!) and my friend was doing good to have an ISDN connection -- dsl isn't available in his area yet. and, as i mentioned, europeans don't have to worry so much about secret rooms in AT&T switching stations, nor monitored bank accounts, etc.

there is something like this in berlin based on oslr, but the coverage is spotty, and i was having trouble getting it working on my mac (admittingly, i am not an uber-geek).

in the states, it would be hard for this to take hold because of cheap broadband, threat of riaa lawsuits, and huge distances between homes. in europe, something like this could really take hold.

apple still sees the hardware and OS as intricately tied (which they are). only when IBM decided to use some OS from redmond did people start to see the two as separate.

well, it kinda depends on whether you are a completist in story terms. i agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer about WW -- i think some nu-metal-post-grunge band godsmack or something or other did the soundtrack; it serves to inform the overall vibe of WW. i also found myself losing any empathy for the prince in WW, but in the context of the trilogy, i do suppose it makes sense -- overall WW is rather shallow, especially given the depth of SOT -- wow, what great story and character development (something video games mostly lack, for some reason).

so, to answer your question, you would probably be ok skipping WW, but if you're completionist, and can find a copy for $10, go for it -- just be prepared to kick up your suspension of tast-- er, disbelief.

how hard is this to grasp? i suppose they would do good to make this known on the home page, but while everyone is calling for "moral responsibility" from wikipedia, what about "individual responsibility" for each person using it?

the attack on the politician is also a non issue. what would happen if someone posted a post on /. smearing, say, bill gates? would the press at large be screaming out for "moral responsibility" from /.?

and why isn't an email to the editors to please remove said content (assuming it is complied with) not enough?

wikipedia is an awesome phenomenon no matter how you slice it, warts and all. anyone who wants to naysay with, "there are errors, and no way to control content" and the like are missing the forest for the trees.
