" Mozilla was reported making roughly $70MM for 2006" I'm curious how in the heck did it make that much? More power to them if this is true, but I thought the only way to make money in the FOSS arena was via support lines. As for competition I dont think it's the same as in the closed source world. In FOSS, there might be friendly competition, but that just drives a better product.

Interesting, will have to dig further. I do remember reading that multiple channels could exist on the same frequency, and each would be using a really really low bitrate, so agree it might turn out to be worse than FM quality even if digital. I'm curious if HDradio will also have RDS streams.

I agree for the most part, but there has been a recent push toward HDRadio. I'm still a little fuzzy on the technical details, but it seems nifty once you get past the marketing.

  8. Sounds great. on Jobs to Labels- Lose the DRM & We'll Talk Price · · Score: 4, Insightful

A year ago, people were arguing "why should I pay $15-$20 for a Cd when I only want 1-2 songs, because musicians suck now adays only have 1-2 good songs" so iTunes starts up. You can buy that one or two songs and save the "crappy filler songs tax". People were happy but didnt like the DRM (which I agree with). So not they're removing the DRM, increasing the quality of the encoding and only adding $0.30 to it. Now people are crying "why should I pay $0.30 more when I can buy the CD for less".... *shakes head* if you want a complete CD then buy the CD, if you want 1-2 songs buy it online. I'm not flaming it's just a perfect example of you can't always make everyone happy. For me this sounds great. When an artist I really like comes out, I grab the CD at a local store, if it's a one hit wonder I hear on the radio, I'll buy the one song online. How is this not a good thing? No this isn't a flame, just frustrated when people ask for things, get it, then complain against their own argument.

So under this philosophy it's ok to put a movie on your website, get a lot of money in google ads or whatever ad format, then wait for the cease and desist to take it down and keep your money? I agreed with him a little up till this point. The patent and copyright system is a bit borked, but what he suggests is just wrong. *shakes head*

I agree, guess my point was moot. I agree a Aquafied version of OO would be nice to fit into the system better and look prettier. Guess my main point was, if you (like me) didn't want to dish out a ton of money for MS Office and needed to use .doc and .xls then OO was at least a good and free option before. Anyway I'm glad to see the announcement.

From my understanding of the term native, it refers to a program that is compiled for the host hardware and bound to host libraries and not requiring any kind of emulation or abstract translation layer. X is native to OS X, so I think it still stands. It might not be as pretty as Aqua but it's not like you're using Virtual PC or Parallels to run a Windows version.

I use to have a dual G4 machine 5 or so years ago when OS 10 came out and it ran Open Office. I think the big problem is that it used the X interface instead of Aqua, so maybe that's what they're concerned about. But from a user perspective I had no problem using just the plain ol' X11R6 version. Think it was via Fink.

  17. biggest issue is filesystem on Microsoft Says Other OSes Should Imitate UAC · · Score: 0, Offtopic

I'm not sure about NTFS but I know a big issue with permission issues is within the FAT filesystem itself. Anyone who can read FAT can read any file by any user and execute any program. One thing nice about any SysV/BSD based OS is that the fs has builtin features that describe who and what can be done with each file. Though NTFS might have fixed this, not sure since I dont use it.
