  1. What OS on Firefox Quickies · · Score: 2, Interesting
Every once in a while I see posts about Firefox or IE or whatever with a security flaw that allow remote access or malware/virii to be installed. But they never say what System it affects. Granted for IE it's pretty simple, but once you add firefox into the equation you have to wonder does this effect Linux too? Even so if the bug is in the linux firefox version, does it really matter at a system level, as many sites that might use this bug are going to be geared toward Windows users.

Granted if it's a bug it needs fixed regardless, but I would be more shocked if it said "allows a person to gain remote access on ALL systems running said software".

  2. Fraud on Uri Geller Accused of Bending Copyright Law · · Score: 1
He unsuccessfully sued longtime nemesis James "Amazing" Randi at least three times for defamation, stemming from Randi's own efforts to unmask Geller as a fraud, and lost several other cases lodged against his critics throughout the years.

I find it funny when the term fraud and magic are in the same sentence. I might be a little fuzzy on the exact legal definition of fraud. But people know magic is fake, and that it's an illusion done for entertainment. No magician is fraudulent unless he is specifically saying "yes I am REALLY doing this, not faking it" even then people would see it as part of the gimmick.

I thought fraud was designed for people who are trying to do something counter to what they said, when no concept of "for entertainment purposes" is implied.

IANAL by I know people are allowed to copy a small percentage for fair use. 8 seconds in 13 minutes sounds like it would fall within that margin.

To follow up on my own post for those wondering wtf. My point is, with a lot of information being extracted about you there is harm to your peace. Those statistics can be used against you. Snail mail spam? Extra credit card offerings, people contacting you for donations if you're wealthier, whatever. Even if it's benign, the spread of your personal information just exposes you from everyone to crooks to legitimate (donate to a church) kinda things. While you can always throw away paper, and say no. It still breaks part of your personal peace, even if a little.

  5. Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness on Privacy and the "Nothing To Hide" Argument · · Score: 4, Insightful

As an American isn't it a right not to be forced into situations that would divulge information about ourselves? Not because "there's something to hide" just that a person man want to live a peaceful life without numbers, statistics, and data mining attacking your personal peace.

I've wondered how mashups would survive. Back in the 90's companies where suing others for just linking to their site. Let alone blatant copying of data feeds. It's a tricky situation.

If it's a site that is funded strictly from ads, then they have a lot to lose by others ripping their content. But at the same time mashups are a wonderful way of getting a lot of similar info together so it's a convenience to the end user.

As long as you can get linux from kernel.org compile and make your own distro, download from a myriad of distros, multiple installs both in hardware and in vm's, and people single people using multiple versions it's really not possible to get a valid number on how many computers are actually running linux.

Plus are you talking about just Server/desktop? If you count the millions of embedded devices that run gnu/linux I'm sure it would be considered the worlds most popular OS. It's all in how you want to swing the numbers.

Nope it was because of bad time management. They put it in a bad time slot where it had to compete with a top rated show. American Idol, Survivor or something?

As for the other comment, it's just trollish.

In the past couple years I can say probably less than 20 spam emails have made it into my inbox. So not sure why they would want to buy this, unless it was to keep competition low. I wonder if this is being done to get rid of excess inventory. When it came out there was a flood of early adopters and people buying JUST for resale on ebay. Now that it's not the hit it was supposed to be, stores are flooded with excess inventory. Simple economics. Have too much of something sell it cheaper. Unencrypted data going over the internet isn't secure, so if I was using the phone for business purposes and security was an issue this doesn't sound like a nice feature. To me this would be like having a secure wireless line to the net for doing banking transactions, then all of a sudden your laptop finds a wifi and chooses to use it instead of the secure line.

Saying cell phones are insecure is about as true as saying land lines are insecure just because someone could tap into them. But I'd be willing to wager the security threat of someone tapping into your phone line is a lot less likely than someone on a remote workstation on the same routing path you're data is going threw being packet sniffed.
