From my own personal experiences, Nextel has very poor coverage in rural areas (Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Salt Lake, Washington, Wisconsin). I carry a Nextel for work, and when I travel, it's important that the phone actually work.

Nextel service is even pretty cruddy in the NW suburbs of Chicago!

The phones are huge, have cruddy battery life, and service (Chicago suburbs & downtown) is horrific. Constant interruptions, lost signal on almost every call, poor voice quality, you name it. I cannot believe they are still in business, at least around here.

If I travel anywhere away from a MAJOR road in Indiana, I have no signal. It's not the phone either, I've already had it checked.

No, I don't have much money left (if any) after the bills are paid, but I really can't complain about my lifestyle, because I do have a steady job for a software development company (I handle hardware/infrastructure). I just wish I didn't live so close to the bad part of town.

$30 an hour would kick ass for me. The guy's a whiner, pining for the days of $80K/year helpdesk positions.

I can also say this: I'm getting calls from recruiters and private companies regarding my online resumes... Things might start looking up for those of us in the midwest. I've already been to an informal interview with a recruiting company, and it really does sound like they're weeding out the people who have no business working on/with/around computers. Gentoo's a pretty good distro, no doubts about it. But I doubt everyone envies Gentoo over their preferred distro.

Yes, I have used Gentoo. It's neat. The documentation is good, the community (for the most part) is excellent.

All that being said, I still prefer *my disto choice here* over Gentoo, because it's easier to maintain for production servers.

Open source is all about choices. Some people choose Gentoo, others choose a different distro. No one's in the wrong, or stupid, for choosing any Linux distro, or rolling their own.

CB radio consists of 40 different channels anyone can use.

Let me tell those of you who have not used a CB radio before, they are incredibly handy to have. I have a good setup on my car (although my transceiver just took a dive, will be upgrading that unit this next week!), and on the open highway in open country, you can send and receive a good distance.

A CB radio is the best "radar detector" money can buy. Truckers are always on the lookout for speed traps, and will continually call out the position of law enforcement officials, whether they're stationary or on the move.

Having a CB radio when you're traveling to places you've never been is also a godsend if there's some kind of detour, and you don't know your way around the area. Call out for directions, and a local driver will usually help you out.

CB radios are also nice in an emergency. There are decent people out there who will help someone when they're on the side of the road, and need help. At the very least, someone will be able to relay the message to law enforcement, or a tow truck or garage in the area.

Probably the best thing CBs are good for is helping one stay awake while on a long drive. It's always nice to be able to chat with someone to help you stay awake. Usually there's someone else looking for exactly the same thing.

CBs are a lot of fun, but keep in mind they are public channels. There are a lot of individuals who use incredibly foul language, and some truckers despise people in "four-wheelers", so you won't always get an answer to your questions. Be polite, though, and you'll find someone willing to chat or help out.
