Misleading is your statment
The PC going in for surgery is another joke. At least he PC CAN be upgraded instead of simply requiring replacement for a major OS update.
I have a Dual 400mhz G4 with 1 gig of ram made in 1998 that runs the newest apple OS faster than my Dell P4 2.8 gig (with HT) with 2 gigs of ram running XP, let alone trying to run Vista (tried but took too long to do anything)
I also just bought dual 1.8 Gig upgrade processor's for my Mac, Which should make it even faster than my 1 year old Dell.
So why do I have to throw away my Mac when a new Version of OSx comes out?
Even Leopard will still support my now 9 year old Mac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_v10.5), and Each time I upgrade my system runs faster not slower http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista /
and as for customer support, the last Time I called Microsoft they told me it would Cost $250 for an answer, while talking to the Apple guy was easy with no talk of charges.
I can't say VS is great for c++, I find it is really bad at anything that is not.NET.
for one, code that compiles and runs error free in VS 2003 (c++ code), starts trowing exceptions in VS 2005
projects built on earlyer version of VS c++ will not build correctly on newer version with out tweeking the build files.
Visual Studio 2003 does not let you build using Win forms unless your entire project is changed to managed code (2005 lets you build managed GUI with native c++ code for other parts)
I perfer codeBlocks and VI for most C++ writing.
and lately I have been using Sharpdevelp for.NET and MonoDevelop for Mono apps.
and I am starting to appresate using xml files for GUI layout like GTK and QT use, as it becomes much less of a hassel to write cross platform GUI's as your build file just substatutes the correct GUI file for the system your building for, SkyNet is a good example of how to build this way. http://sky-net.sourceforge.net/index.php
also until.net has native sound and Video support, and runs on more than one platform, it can't be the best VM
verse please.. I can't find do not gamble... anywhere in the scriptues
here is all teh scriptures that have to do with gamabling "Greens Literal Translation"
Jonah 1:7
And they said, each man to his companion, Come and let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil occurred to us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
Nahum 3:10
Yet she went into exile; she went into captivity. Also her young ones were dashed to pieces at the head of all the streets, and they cast lots for her honored ones, and all her great ones were bound in chains.
John 19:24
Then they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but let us cast lots about it, whose it will be (that the Scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided My garments among them," and "they threw a lot for My garment." Then indeed the soldiers did these things. LXX-Psa. 21:19; MT-Psa. 22:18 )
Acts 1:26
And they gave their lots. And the lot fell on Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
I am at TechEd, adn saw his speach, he said, I have touched Red Hat and SUSE, what he said "Don't like it, dont know anything about it...but Linux sucks.."
he said that Linx is not free bucause you "MUST" buy support, like there is no choice...
he also stated on several occations that Linux is only good when using CUPS or SAMBA and other then that there is noting it is good for.
he did not call for peace.. he almost started a fight, as he clearly told people Linux Sucks..don't use it..
I have been dealing with Red HAt for a while, This is the way the Red hat engineers helped us set up. We buy one server with support. This server gets updates.. because it is Open Source, and nothing saying I can't. I can then use these saem updates on all the rest of the servers. as for support, I should state better, anytime I call for support, they ask for my support number and my problem. I have never been asked about which server or is it the one with service.
you do not need to buy service in order to install.
using a Sat server will not allow you to control all the servers from the Red Hat network, but as these are Government systems not on the internet it does not matter. we use the Sat server to pull updates move over a trusted guard to be presented to the inside servers.
if you no longer have a subscription, you can still get updates. CentOS or Enterprise will have the updates, or just go to the package source RPMS and compile them your self.
I am not saying you are wrong. Just you have more flexability than most think.
hmm. price per seat...
I just took the Red Hat System's Maintenance and support class. in this class Red Hat shows you how to buy only one support contract (that is all you buying) and use a satellite server to get updates for all the rest. They have a desktop per(50) seat license for the desktop software, but in comparison it cheep. This is for large corporations who do not understand buy one use on all. nothing stops you from doing this.
also you have enterprise and centOS that are build on red hats source.
and Fedora 5, well the new SeLinux with a soon to be PL 4 rated system, is very useful for government systems. and built in ZEN for virtualization, you have now opened up a whole new way to run servers and securing them.
There change went from a per version license to a time support license. This helped companies be assured that they could buy it and it would be supported. They felt they could write code and not have it change next week. Also there support is for free upgrades during the support time. But you still use the software when you stop paying.
Unlike Microsofts...... where when you stop paying you must.. well let them tell you... "At the end of the subscription the rights to use the software end and the customer must either uninstall the software or renew its Enterprise Subscription enrollment."
the whole thing..
Enterprise Subscription Agreement is designed for organizations that prefer to standardize their Microsoft software throughout their organization based on the Microsoft enterprise products (Microsoft Office Professional, Microsoft Windows Professional desktop operating system upgrade, and Core Client Access License) at prices based on a three-year agreement term. At the end of the subscription the rights to use the software end and the customer must either uninstall the software or renew its Enterprise Subscription enrollment.
So I don't mind paying $2,400 for a copy of Red Hat, put it on all my boxes (over 50 at this site) and use a satellite server to get updates. Call for support for any problems..
you get

if you work for Sun.. Why do you not know the Product name is Trusted Solaris (not secure Solaris.. what is that ) and you should also know that Trusted Solaris is a PL4+ system under DCID 6/3 and you guessed it.. SELINUX has acived PL4 + and TSABI with Net Top II.
Hmm. While I have to agree, that it would be easy to write, getting it installed is another matter. While you could make the package, the clueless who would just install anything will not use the command line, will not know how to install anything no in the package manager, (is that not why Linux is so hard.. to hard to install software;) so it would have to be included in the stable branch of what ever distribution (ubuntu, suse, mandrake), Fat chance on that.. or walk a person through the process to add your site to their package manager with.. probably not happening.. Stupid people fear the Command line..
as these users use Synaptic instead of apt. So what user could install this source, a knowledgeable user maybe? But not a new unknowing user..
now the better point.. this worm is not installed in windows , by the user, it seeks out random address and installs its self on unprotected systems, this could not happen on a *nix system, unless the person was running as root, on the Internet, reading email, randomly clicks ok to a package manager (even if they are not running it), or misses the big slowdown as software is compiled.
So While you could make a keylogger for Linux... it would be really hard to get anyone to install it... even if it did say it could grab porn from the net.. too may steps for most to bother..
hmm . the link you provided states that Google has some bad JavaScript and VBscripts that allow it to be hacked. I could see the JavaScript but I did not know VBscript runs on Linux ??
good Point.. SRSS 3.1 does not work (out of the box) with the Linux 2.6 kernel (2.4 it works fine I have it running on RH AS 3)
but I think you would have to mess with the install script so it installed he Solaris X86 kernel modules and then installed the Linux RPMS. (alien)

The first thing you need to know is how to write a SSAA (Site Security Accreditation and acceptance plan)
Then it depends on which DoD agency who has the DAA (designated approving authority) as your company can not approve it, this will say if you need to use a DISA STIG, http://csrc.nist.gov/pcig/cig.html
Or I it's the Marine Corps/Navy they will have there own checklist that is almost a direct copy of the STIG.
USB drives are out along with floppy, and CD, while you may see a lot of people saying that you can have these on SABI (Secret and below infrastructure) its bad practice. You want only one point of entry for your system. Standard Pratice in places that actually follow the Regulations, is have a Security person (ISSO,SSO,AISSO) with a floppy and or CDrom and they are the point of entry for all incoming data. This data is then virus scanned, labeled, logged and put to a file share. As the first rule of Government security is you can not trust the users to do this. Then one of them works on a document at home, is infected but does not know with the new windows virus out there, slaps this floppy or cd into his system, thinks, "It's safe it came from my computer", and infects the entire network. You now have a security violation where you will have to do lots of paperwork, like, how did unauthorized data enter the network.
Also you need to have an agreement that under repair or if you lease the computers. The Hard Drivers will not return with them.
truly this shows you know nothing..

why do they need a google search bar?
firefox have a tool bar that as google.. plus anthing else (UPS,FEDEX Amazon, ebay ect.).. It's not that IE is king.. its that the Mozilla people already work with google. what do you think that little "G" is in the right hand corner on the pull down in firefox.. and we don't need the pop up blocker.. we have a desktop search tool.. what do they offer..
first before talking software.. you need talk about file formats.
you ned to explani to teachers and students that Microsoft is not the only wordprocesser in the world, and because of this they should be saving documents as.rtf (rich text format) to make sure anyone can read it.. and maybe even use PDF as a distrobution form insted of powerpoint..
then a change of tools like from Microsoft office to Openoffice will not be as hard.
also the point that while openoffice has problems with some native microsoft office documents, Micrsoft office can not open a single OpenOffice native documents..
next step.. Support.. as a School you need it but students may not. OpenOffice is the winner here. you buy StarOffice from Sun for the school ($65 from sun http://globalspecials.sun.com/dr/v2/ec_Main.Entry1 7c?V1=705170&PID=705170&PN=1&SP=10023&SID=50285&CU R=840&CID=190073&API1=65&API2=GOOGLE&API3=staroffi ce_exa&DSP=&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=190073 ) and give openoffice to the students.. (or better a live linux cd with it already there... sorry off point)
also changes from MS office to Star/open office and from front page to NVU will also help latter if you would like to change to Apple or Linux for desktops.. or even Sunrays with java desktop.. but you will gain more freedomes in choice when you start little things like change to RTF and PDF as any system can have the ability to read/write these for free.. even windows..

you ned to explani to teachers and students that Microsoft is not the only wordprocesser in the world, and because of this they should be saving documents as
then a change of tools like from Microsoft office to Openoffice will not be as hard.
also the point that while openoffice has problems with some native microsoft office documents, Micrsoft office can not open a single OpenOffice native documents..
next step.. Support.. as a School you need it but students may not.
OpenOffice is the winner here.
you buy StarOffice from Sun for the school ($65 from sun http://globalspecials.sun.com/dr/v2/ec_Main.Entry
)
and give openoffice to the students..
