I STILL use windowmaker, as I don't want junk on my Desktop and windowmaker got installed by default on all machines at work. I have made a keyboard shortcut to maximize vertically.
To do this, put in:
~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker
the line:
VMaximizeKey = "Mod1+Mod4+F12";
Or whatever you want. You can probably also fix this in the graphical configuration interface of windowmaker.
yeah, out here in Europe MSX had some following too! I started programming on one, with the nice Logo cartridge (the one with the turtle). Shame they didn't catch on, I liked them as much as my c64
But, as ever, such a family has people-issues to which a technological solution ain't gonna work anyway>
Yeah, technological solutions to non-technological problems just won't work as it is the wrong approach altogether. Let them fool themselves, I guess.
There are two reasons why this tracking does more bad than good. Firstly, the parent will just follow their kid only via technology, instead of talking to the kid, learning the kid to talk about what it's doing, keeping to its boundaries, etc.
Secondly, for the paranoia people, they parent will trust too much on the cellphone signal and if something really happens to the kid, they will found out only much and much later.
It's hard to quantify this, but after the initial boost in search quality compared to other search engines just after google started there was a big dip in google's search quality.
This was due to the fact that mostly malicious website makers found their way to get up in the search ranks with nonsense pages. You might not have noticed it, but it was for example impossible to find a computer store selling a certain brand in a certain town, as link harvesting websites just dumped all town and brand names on their website. You'd have to carefully inspect about five pages of junk search results before you'd found a real store, which made it a very demanding task to find your result via google that way.
Now it's a bit better again. As GP explains this is probably due to the fact that they now make their income by serving ads to as many people as possible, and figured that better quality -> more visitors. I don't blame them, nothing is for free in this world, and I still have my power as an individual to give my pageview to the search site that has the best quality.
Also note that the opera start screen has a fashionably dressed chick on it! Gotta love the Scandinavian style:D
As for the comparison: opera by default doesn't load the status bar, whereas firefox does, but firefox loses space when you open another tab.
Something that drives me crazy in default-version firefox is that closing the last tab also closes the browser).
So I guess that in effect they take up the same space, although opera will end up several pixels sleeker in the default install.
yeah, yesterday I downloaded the tar.gz of opera 9.10, to get the new flash version. Only 5 MB, amazing!
The best thing was, I could now load a certain corporate website which required the new flash, whereas I couldn't even open that on the IE terminals at my workplace, because updating flash requires administrator priviliges there!! Crazy. Had to fake that my browser was firefox, but even that works flawlessly under opera. Damn, I think I'm becoming a fanboy:D
This is the one thing about the internet that really worries me... the ability to customize your "news" in such a way that you only read things with which you agree. This tends to polarize people (seen much of that?) and cause huge rifts between the camps, because over time you forget you are only reading half of the story.
Well you can stop worrying about that! People that read newspapers also select the newspaper that is in line with their opinion. As a businessman you'll buy a newspaper that will have a high coverage of financial news. A person interested in sport will buy a newspaper with more sport in it. They both might not even realize that they are biasing their sources of information. Would you read books about subjects that do not appeal to you? Even before I had the internet I biased my sources of information, and even with the internet, I will find stories that I didn't look for and that widen my general scope. That last part might even be bigger due to the internet.
However, if instead of my opinion you just want to have your statement confirmed, I advice you to start reading the blog of ESR and the comments therein.
I use opera to browse. It works. The bloat might be in the mail program, news reader, and very clunky irc interface, I have to admit that part.
But the browsing experience under opera is amazing. For example, it's the only program that I can install on my user account on a linux machine (got no root and happy with that) where by just unpacking the tar.gz I have an install with working flash! I tried installing flash for firefox, but it would lead me to lots of dead ends, I gave up.
Most important for me in opera are the tabs, where the opening of new windows via the mouse or ctrl-n/ctrl-t can be easily configured, and the best implementation of a zoom function in a browser ever!
Hah, this is interesting, I just (one hour ago) saw a german TV show where they compared 3 GPS instruments and a good ol' cab driver on a 2-mile track in the city of Munich. The worst GPS made it a 20 minute trip, the better ones a 7 minute trip, the cab driver a 4 minute trip. No magic involved, just unefficient road planning by the GPS systems.
Then again, I had a cab driver ask me once (I was walking on the sidewalk) where a certain hotel in town was. Even if I would have known, I think I wouldn't have answered. It was a well-known chain hotel and the city is pretty small. I pitied his passenger, though.
P.S.: And thank you all for the tips about USA cab drivers, I'll take a map with me if I ever plan to go to the USA and ask for a cab:)
They help creating this political climate. How would you learn about any political decision if not via the media. Do you directly read the proceedings of the senate, etc? No. The media allow a faulty political climate to exist by (willingly) failing to treat its problems. In contrast to certain emotions of this time, it is not unpatriotic to question your government.
The interesting thing about your post is that you probably ment it funny, but it's hard to be sure about it. Really sad that there are many people that are conditioned to think about it like this. Damnit people, that kit was from the cold war era, wasn't it? Why was no one afraid of communists buying those kits that time? Or did we get even more stupid since then.
Furthermore, as a chemist I can tell you that everything is a potential danger, when applied in a certain way. Just mix all the stuff from your cleaning cabinet together. Or
No, the 80% that still use IE have family members like you and me to fix their windows account for them every now and then! And do the network settings at the same time. Windows does not work 'out of the box' and you just don't realize it. For the rest I'm pretty happy with it, I have had linux crash more often than windows in the last few years. This was mostly because some X application would disable my keyboard or whatever. Furthermore, I do turn of the windows pc every day, so not much chance for memory leaks.
In the case of friends & family I did encounter a completely screwed up windows user account on a personal laptop, but managed to solve this by opening a new account, hah. All but one managed to keep away from viruses (thank god for firewalls, the one that didn't have one had to do a reinstall, this time with firewall), which is very nice because virus scans take a day or so and really spoil my day.
4. Same client, multiple platforms thanks to Qt.
Isn't it better to have many many more clients across every platform than to be stuck with only 1 on every platform? Plus have many more hardware choices as well (if you want to connect your home phone to VoIP)?
Actually, no. I'm as anti-monopolist as all of you here, but for your sister and your grandparents, it just works like this: You go to skype.com and install the program. You don't have to ask first what kind of computer they have, if they have a certain kind of modem setup to take care of. Skype works for everyone, a lot of people that even wouldn't know how to install a program would still be able to use Skype. Skype made it just right, which is laudable.
Well, at least viral marketing can be killed instantly by the negative karma that comes about when the blatant lies of this being an 'enthusiast's user opinion' are uncovered. I really like that aspect of viral marketing, the message will be accepted if the cooperation is fair about it, and just couldn't use original channels for an advertisment (for example a car advertizement that would be too shocking to show on TV, but is artistically interesting anyway.).
However, if the cooperation is trying to screw us, and someone finds out (as will eventually happen anyway), the viral marketing works just as viral against the cooperation that started it. Therefore, viral marketing is playing with fire!
All in all this must be the most fair form of advertizing, we the users can directly respons to it and decide if we like it or not.
I have the impression that the companies that were in early on the internet managed to get a lot of IP space for themselves (before everybody else realized the problems and unnecessity of that later on). Probably Microsoft was late for supper as usual.
That is not to say that several of these companies managed to screw up big time on the way and are now minor players. That makes this map actually a historical map of the situation at the end of the 80's.
Alternative to what? kicking your roomba in the right direction? Really, what do you mean, are there any other roomba remote control options that cost even more than a $2000 Macbook?:)
but calling it 'aerosol sprays' is certainly making you think of the cans. It's not that anything else is currently 'spraying' aerosols, is it. In any case, it will make for an interesting finale in the next hollywood natural disaster movie! The world saved by deodorant! It would stink, though.
If the site allows wars like this to go on, apparently they need to rework their moderation engine. Still I'm very glad Digg is existing, as slashdot became a lot more useable. It's very nice that the noisy people found their medium and soulmates there.
To do this, put in:
~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker
the line:
VMaximizeKey = "Mod1+Mod4+F12";
Or whatever you want. You can probably also fix this in the graphical configuration interface of windowmaker.
Damn, I forgot about that one. That really is the only movie that treats the internet movie-critizism as it is. It gets totally funny at the end!

And the finale can be found here
If you're top gear, you can even do it with cars. Music part starts after a few minutes.
Since most Dutch houses are in fact smaller than the average american SUV, the GP might have gotten confused and messed those two up.
How did YOU think he became deaf?
or, even worse, Jeremy Clarkson!

So they're over the schedule and over their budget, but at least they got the pc game out in time. Beat that, Duke Nukem Forever!
